Hero Factory Invasion from Below Review #1: Evo Walker
Alright, here we go! I got 'em; the Invasion from Below sets nice and early, and so, without further banter, I present set #44015; the 51 piece Evo Walker!
About this creation
Right, lets have a look at the parts in this set;

These are the bone pieces that we have:
2 yellow four-long lower limb pieces
2 black double socket bone pieces
3 black regular lower limb pieces
1 black seven-long lower limb piece
1 grey regular upper limb piece
1 three-long lower limb piece
1 grey three-long liftarm with a balljoint in the middle
1 black single socket connector piece
1 grey short double socket bone piece
1 black technic pin connector with two balljoints

Armour (and armour-ish things) included are:
1 orange seat piece
1 blue windscreen piece
3 yellow size-five armour pieces
1 silver size-five armour piece, which is printed
1 gunmetal size-four armour piece

We also get in this set:
1 gunmetal upper launcher piece
1 trans-green lower launcher piece
and a mix of little technic and system pieces.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot, we also get parts to make MINIFIGS! That's right, this is why this line is so special, we actually get Hero Factory minifigures!

Included in this set in terms of Minifigs is Evo and three... I'm not sure what those things are. There's been no clarification of what they are, but I can guess that these are beast larve. Yeah, I assume that these things grow up to be the massive monsters that are the villains of this series. So, I'm gonna call these "Beast Larve" until further notice.

Anyway, you'll notice that the HF minifigs are much larger than regular minifigs (Spider-Man is not included in the set, I just drew him in for comparison.) This means that the HF minifigs aren't compatable with system minifigs, meaning that System fans will find no use with these sets.

These figures are very similar to the old Bionicle Minifigs, in size, shape, and level of detail in the molds. However, HF characters usually have smooth, sleek armour, and these figs have very jagged and complicated shapes, which is odd. That doesn't mean I don't like them, they look quite nice, they're just not very interchangeable.

Underneath the helmets, these figures have blank unprinted Minifig heads. Which is good, because then you don't have to worry about keeping the eyes of the helmets lined up with the eyes of the regular head. That I approve.

Strangely enough, Underneath the torso armour is a Skeleton Torso. Kind of odd. I know normal HF builds have a sort of "Skeleton" undeneath, but that's still silly. Though, because these armour pieces fit on skeleton torsos, does that mean...?

...yes it does. The torso Piece, and the helmet both fit on a regular fig. There is a lot of gap underneath the shoulder pads, though, and the helmets look rather large. I wouldn't recommend using these on regular minifigs, but heck, you can do what you want.

The Beast Larve come in three different colours; Red, Lime, and Orange. Whether we get different colours in wave 2, I don't know. But out of the three, my favorite must be the red ones, mainly because that red underneath black makes the colours stand out and look very powerful. These are nice, simple things which are nice for troop building. I like them, despite their simplicity.

These things have also been referred to as "Jumpers", and that is their main feature; they jump. Much like the Visorak minifigs of 2005, if you press hard on these guys and let go, then they'll start flying. If you press in the centre, they'll gain a lot of height, but they won't go forward at all. If you press them towards the rear, the thing will fly forward pretty far, but not very high. It's pretty effective, except they don't tend to land on their feet very much.

By the way, the "Machine" sets also include a sticker sheet to apply to the windscreen. Though I won't be applying mine; I don't want the plastic ruined by the glue on mine, and I don't think too much will be lost from the set if they're there.
Sorry, I hope you don't mind.

Here is the Evo Walker, everyone!

By the way, Evo is also equipped with this thing on his wrist. Not sure what it is yet, all I know is that in the comic in the instructions, Evo uses it to summon his XL Machine. But Stormer has one too, and nobody else. Is it a symbol of authority or something? Because if so, why does Evo have one? If somebody knows what the heck that thing is, please tell me!

Right, here it is. Bless this little scrap-pile. Gotta give the designers credit for originality; they came up with an interesting design, and didn't use a torso piece. Which I'm glad of. Only trouble is that it looks a complete mess. Also, the functionality of the walker could have been better. It can't walk. How can you call something a "Walker" if it can't walk! The front two can move just fine, but it has to drag its single hind leg along. I personally think an odd number of legs won't work. They should've been evan, so you can really get that whole walking thing to work.

This is mainly in the legs. These two front ones are fine; they work okay. They look a little incomplete with sockets as feet. But it works if you see those as claws or something instead of sockets.

This is the real problem. You can't move the back leg that much. And because it is so short, it means that the seat leans back really far, meaning that Evo can't see where he's going. It's easily fixed. Change the lower limb piece for an upper limb piece, and add an extra segment to that back leg, and the thing looks great.

The cannon on the walker is pretty cool. It's pretty basic, but the design works, and the gun can aim in almost any position if you articulate it creatively at every point. I looks okay-ish from most angles too. I would dissaprove of the printed piece, but it's not very specific, which means it could potentially be used in MOCCing.

Only major bummer is that that piece gets in the way of the cockpit a lot, which stops upwards articulation, unless you turn the gun upside down, so the printed piece is face down.

Speaking of which, the seat is quite nice. I mean, it clips on the HF bones well, and with a little thinking-outside-the-box, you can make it look very nice. My only gripe is that the only colours it comes in are orange and lime. Which is annoying, considering that that those colours are very specific, and can clash with the colour scheme of certain sets. The best example of this is on Stormer Freeze Machine. Also, why did they use the orange seat in this set? It would have been much better in green, it would have worked with the colour of the blaster.

The minifigure fits in well in this seat, and the windscreen fits well around the minifigure (though I didn't do it too well in this pic... hey, I was still figguring it out.)

Also, like with the seat, the blue windscreen would have worked better in green, considering that's one of the highlighting colours of the walker. (I mean, blue works with Evo, but not the walker.)

So, Invasion from Below. Interesting! I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
This is how this set turns out;

Toy Value: 1/5 (I'm sorry, but the poseability on this is very limited, and, yeah, I expect a "Walker" to actually walk.)

Design Value: 4/5 (It has its flaws, but this was a seriously inventive and respectful design.)

Moccist Value: 2/5 (Y'know, apart from the new Invasion from Below pieces, none of which are exclusive to this set, the parts are kinda bog standard, and nothing really inventive)

Total score: 7/15

Comments: This set is very inspired, and it was mainly an experiment. As a MOCcist, I can respect the creativity gone into the design. It's just not very effective as a toy.

Heh, that was cool, but a little before my time though to be nostalgic :P (I was alive then; I just never discovered Bionicle until 2003)

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate . @Wertman: Indeed. I get the feeling that we may be coming to the end of HF, or at least the end of proper constraction (or what HF tried to pass off as proper constraction). I'm sad to see it go, Mechs just aren't my thing (I see them as far too impractical). I hope we don't see more of this building style, but if we do, at least there'll still be people to remember the old ways. (Watch this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL_VeTZR4RI And try not to get nostalgic)
I did hear something about HF ending soon... Not sure how true it is, but I also heard that it was being replaced by another constraction theme (Apparently was going to be along similar lines to the Castle theme, though I dunno whether that's true.) But I hope that HF goes out with a bang; Invasion from below would be a bad way to end; I hope they do something really special for it's final (Also, I hope we see Stringer and Nex again as sets)

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate . It never ceases to amaze me how thoroughly you do these things. And how quickly the Northern Hemisphere gets the new sets. Anyhow well done. i agree with your rating of this set, not so great. The herofigs... Just like the old Bionicle figs.
Well, I try my best to be thorough :D Yeah, and Sorreh about the whole set release thing, It's a pain for at least somebody :/ Thanks for the praise, friend. Yeah, The Hero Figs are quite like the Bionicle figs, but at least these are slightly more compatable with regular system, even if it's only slightly.

My point exactly! The non-walker machines have better leg poseability! Glad to have your first comment of the year though ;)

Quoting Commander Spencer, Ultimate Bionicle Fan Man, I really hate the rest of the world right now. They all get these sets and we don't. Anyways, it's nice that you're making reviews of these, can't wait to get some when they come out. In March.

Quoting Legobob 29 Ooohh, new Wertman reviews! Exciting. Well reviewed my friend. I don't have very high hopes for this storyline to be honest. I'm gonna get the Evo XL machine for its pieces, and maybe a couple of the villains, but I don't really like the heroes this time. But looking forward to more reviews! :)
Yeah, I must admit the story is kinda bland, but most of the sets are interesting enough I think.
