The first thing i was aware of was the sound of a dog barking.
i cracked open my eyes and beheld a face that brought everything back with a flash, the pain, the betrayal and the loss of everything i held dear to myself.
"Archie i cried" and Archie looked up wagging his tale.
i looked about myself. I was propped up against a sandstone pillar, my weapons on the surrounding sand. I was in a desert. So, i thought to myself, this is where ushnack meant when he said a place of no return.
i painfully got up and gathered up my weapons. I was lost, in the desert with orcs attacking korgan hold right at this very moment. Then i heard a voice,
"so here is the mighty hunter, my old friend"
i spun around, not daring to hope that I had found Eldrin the wizard
I had. "what are you doing here, i thought you were slaying the land worms in the badlands!"
"i was and have" replied the wizard "we are in the badlands, though why you are here i have no idea! you are supposed to be guarding Gwaine!"
"and so i was, until Ushnack the orc chief removed me from the scene"
"you had better tell me everything" said Eldrin "from the moment i left Korgan Hold to the events which resulted in this meeting"
"i shall tell you all that has passed, if you promise to help me once the tale is over"
"i shall stay with you until Korgan is in Mythronian hands once more!"
And so i recount my tale...
Korgan hold is a dwarven built castle used by the Mythronians to keep watch on the orc forces nearby. It was hidden and kept secret from all except those who lived there and the king. I am the Bodygaurd of Gwaine, captain of Korgan Hold. The castle isn’t yet finished, but building materials for the ramparts have not yet arrived.
On the day my tale begins on, Carlos, a ranger ran through the gate of the court yard. It was the job of Carlos to watch the rode leading through the forest to the Castle.
The guards let him through without a murmur and the gates were opened.
Once inside the keep, Carlos stopped.
“Sanderson”, he shouted. A knight ran out of a door on his left.
“Yes sir, what can I do for you”
“tell Gwaine that a Rider in Black approaches, I didn’t see his shield but he wore dark armour”
Gwaine was on one of the balconies of the Armoury. He had just returned from a hunt and was inspecting the castles defences with a critical eye.
“Tredor” he called. A voice answered from within,
“any news about the supplies, they should have been here three days ago”
“no captain, but the sooner they arrive the better. We need to build up the ramparts and fill in the holes on the keep”
Suddenly a voice called from within
“sorry captain, but I have some troubling news for you. A rider all in black approaches”
Gwaine jumped up and ran into the armoury grabbing his sword and armour.
“sanderson, go rouse the tower guard and get Rumanthil to make ready the ballista. Tredor, have the drawbridge raised and tell all archers to get to their positions”
The men hurried to their tasks while gwaine ran up the stairs to join me in the throne room.
Tredor had the drawbridge raised in no time and readied the archers.
Meanwhile, Rumanthil prepared the ballista.
Through every loop whole, the archers aimed at the road. No one could reach the moat and live.
Tredor waited; spear in hand until the sound of a horse reached his ear. The knight was on his way…
A knight in black armour rode through the arch way. His wore a black cloak and bore a Mythronian shield. Tredor cursed. A false alarm is never good for moral.
The Mythronian knight was stopped by the guards.
“what is this” shouted the knight “I am baron Karayan, I have come to see gwaine-LET ME PASS”
“Raise the drawbridge” called Tredor “I am sorry my friend, but we didn’t know it was you”
Soon I beheld Karayan as he stood before Gwaine in the throne room.
“so” said Gwaine “what brings you here again Baron, any news of our supplies?”
“Your supplies burn as we speak” said Karayan “as do most of the farms and villages surrounding the castle. The trolls know of your presence here. I have spent the last weak escaping from their ambushes after they destroyed my castle. Their army is on the move, it will be here by night fall”
