This was a doodle I created to incorporate a hexagonal ring I produced using hinged plates. The idea was to create something that had a six pointed star silhouette, but as I was developing the "wings" I doodled my way into a different direction.
This little scout ship is a one man reconnaissance vehicle, intended for orbital survey missions and mid range exploration. It features a large communications array for transmitting data back to a lunar base within range.
The vehicle boasts four large booster rockets for jetting the vehicle the distances between planets and orbital satellites. These boosters could be detached from the main fuselage in the event of an emergency. The vehicle is designed for space travel and would struggle to maneuver within an atmosphere, however in space and moving from airless asteroids and moons it has little difficulties.
Between the ring of boosters there is an inner ring of jets for maneuvering and to provide the core vehicle acceleration should it need to escape from the jettisoned booster pods.
Each booster pod also features a forward thruster vent, intended to slow the vehicle and acting like a retro booster to provide an emergency stop.
The forward landing gear is positioned on a turntable mechanism, which allows it to rotate to the rear, thus avoiding the delicate hydrolic mechanism from being struck by micro-meteors. This mechanism also places a small scanner relay to the forward section in flight mode.
The rear landing skis are locked to the rear of the vehicle. The combination of these three skis is to provide clearance so the booster pods do not make contact with the ground while the vehicle is on station or landed.
The vehicle is purely a patrol and survey craft for short solo missions and does not feature the niceties of a galley, it is not intended for extended missions of more than 24 hours and the pilot's needs are accommodated by his space suit. Though the cockpit is pressurised in case the suit's seals leak or experiences damage.
As a survey vessel no weapons are incorporated into the basic model's design.
I've tried to replicate the classic Space colours, including:
Primary colours, blue, grey and trans yellow
details such as yellow/black triple stripe
I forgot to add an oxygen tank on the minifig, but there is sufficient room to add one.
The hexagonal ring drove the design, however the eventual shape is partly influenced by the Star Fury designs from Babylon 5 and there may be a little X Wing influence too. I've actually recycled the landing gear from an earlier Neo-Classic Space vehicle I did awhile ago.

Neat! I like the shape of the engines and the cockpit design, like how you used the bottom part that's from old sets. Very nice landing gear also, many sets lack that! If you want, I can render the main pic for you (so it's all fancy), send the LDD to my email (on my ho epage) if you want to. This is a great model and really deserves to look good in POV-Ray!
