M.O. Round 7: Nick Barrett vs matt rowntRee: Cirque de Legoland
A clown gets into a cannon. What could possibly go wrong ?
About this creation

2013 MOC Olympics THE FINAL!! (No, I can't believe it either...)

Opponent : matt rowntRee

Our category was to depict a circus based calamity...

On with the show!

'Welcome, ladies and gentlemen! Enjoy the wonder of the Circus of Legoland!'

'Watch in awe as I persuade Nellie here to stand on this drum!'

'Gasp in fright as Coco the clown blasts out of the cannon!'

'Wonder at the aerial acrobatics of the Totally Tremendous Tumbling Topsy!'

Ready...

Fire! I said gunpowder, not plutonium!

Coco crashes into Topsy...

... who flies through the air with the greatest of ease...

... and with customary panache, executes a perfect landing on Nellie's back...

... who is not pleased and shows it!...

...what happened to the Ringmas... oh.

There, I hope you weren't too traumatized by that.

You have been watching the Circus of Legoland, starring....

A big tent!

The audience!

Some more audience! Including someone matt may recognize (yes, she's coming to get you!), and a real, actual minifigure (gasp!)

A cannon!

A ringmaster, also known as Sir Barrington Fosbury-Curlitash, who's recovered quite well from being a stain on the floor...

Nellie the elephant!...

... packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus...

A drum!

A bang!

And last, but certainly not least, the terrifically talented tumbling Topsy!

A few details...

A roof structure whose stripes didn't make things difficult. No, not at all...

A lighting gantry that you'd hardly notice, but I'm quite pleased with.

The exterior is a bit rough and ready; the pelmet conceals some technic jiggery-pokery that holds the roof sections in place and at the right angle.

Nellie will fit through this door, just. It latches closed. There is absolutely no point to that other than me being, well, me.

The whole assembly is modular and transportable. The centre section of roof, with sign attached, lifts out and the door with frame unclips, leaving two tent halves that are self-supporting. Six seating modules attach to the base.

It all goes back to together again...

I think that about wraps it up...

'Er, Hello! Is anyone going to come and get me ?'

With thanks to Chris Phipson for putting so much effort in every year, the judges, all my previous opponents, matt rowntRee; against whom it's a privilege to compete, Topsy Creatori for her inspiration, and everybody I've ignored for the last three months because I'm busy building!

Love to all.

Your work shows the versatility of the Homemakers. That acrobat is more realistic than I imagined a small brick-built figure could be. Now if Lego would bring back the Homemaker figures...

I thought I'd already commented on this! Ah well. This is a particularly masterful build, which is of course the norm for you, but in this there is just so much going on. The Elephant is a charming build on its own, as are many other parts of this build. Both you and Matt deserved the win, and if it was me judging I honestly couldn't have decided. Anyway, superb work and congrats on the win!

To both Nick and Matt. Gentlemen, you both put in one HECK of a show here in the finals! Congratulations to both of you! Nick, I loved your tent design and the elephant was killer! Matt, I can't tell you how expressive all of your characters were! With the outcome already decided my vote is supurfluous. However, for the sake of closure, my vote would have gone to Matt. Thank you both SO much for a truly outstanding showing throughout these entire games! It's really a grueling building schedule and you both knocked it out of the park at every stage of the game! Both of your prizes have already been mailed out so be looking for them. Again, congratulations to both of you and I look forward to seeing more great things from both of you in the near future! ~ Chris.

Similar to David, I’ve had (and still have) some really tough and bad days. So bad, that I almost forgot about the MO. Almost. I’m a bit late and this year’s winner is already certain, but congratulations to both of you, Nick and Matt, for making it thus far and for two mind-blowing entries. You both came up with a firework of ideas and many parts of your final entries are fantastic enough to be stand-alone MOCs. Nick, congratulations for winning the MocOlympics 2013. I love the use of the old homemaker figures, they always have a special place in my heart. I also like the tent and how it holds everything together. It is a perfect presentation and a well deserved win. If I had to decide, Matt would have gotten my vote due to his hilarious figures, but I’m glad I didn’t need to vote, since both entries are ace!

Nick, this is unbelievable!! Love the way you built the story like a comic-book. The level of details left me speechless a long moment. "How did he do to create half of a tent in a so accurate rendering?". Each performer has its touch of life. The elephant is a little piece of art. I was amazed. Best wishes with judges to get you to the first place. It would be so well-deserved. I'm waiting...

Making us judges work again! I've had a couple of tough days and been mostly offline, but to come back to the final entries was a joy. There is so little to choose between the builds here. Both of you have shown humour and spectacular skill. On balance due to the wonderful tent and the ring build, the cloth is stunning, and possibly two of the best built maxi-figures ever, I've cast my vote with you. Fantastic building throughout and ending on a real high.

Quoting Delatron 3000 Nick and Matt, I’m leaving the same comment on both your builds to avoid showing any favouritism – after all we have an Englishman and a VLUG member in the final. Though in my opinion it could have been an English VLUG member and then I would be really happy ;) Nick, I adore the big top. It’s a massive undertaking and it’s superbly realised in the brick. You have utilised large builds throughout the contest this year and it has really worked for you – your control of the various scales has been masterful. The Elephant is very nicely shaped too. I have a confession though: I REALLY do not enjoy maxi/ technic/ homemaker figs, and that is colouring my opinion of the whole as they play such a prominent part in the presentation of your build. Matt (and lots of the commenters on your build), why no love for clowns? Clowns are great! Your clowns in particular are a great selection of parts use, colour and posing. Likewise, the cats are very, very good and full of character. The car is really well done (with a cheeky technic fig through the windscreen – trashtalk by building?) and you have shown the damage in very clever ways, while there are a lot of neat filler details in the stands and the destroyed cage. If I were a judge, I would probably just give this to Matt, based on the variety of built elements and, I feel, marginally better representation of the ‘disaster’ part of the category. But then, Matt dissed clowns and set big cats on them too and I do really, really like Nick’s big top. But I feel about technic figs like it seems everybody else feels about clowns! And I am just a bitter, confused, clown-loving, losing semi-finalist and not a judge. So I will say congratulations to both of you on reaching this stage, putting out consistently good builds throughout this marathon event, keeping us entertained round after round and being excellent examples of the MOCpages community. Well done gents and the best of luck with your remaining judges.
Thanks Delatron, and thanks for your tireless optimism and encouragement to all the builders in these games. You've been a huge part of what makes the MOs successful and I look forward to seeing what you produce next year!

Nick, you nailed it. At first glance I wasn't sold, but upon closer inspection I realized how excellent this is. The tent is most impressive to me - the angles are accurate, and the back looks good even despite (masterfully minimalistic) support. The interior is also very good, you hid the gaps in the floor exceptionally well. Great colour choice, not too cluttered, and well composed. Kudos! Nice work on the elephant as well, though I think it could be refined a bit. (Thinking of LegoHaulic's elephant from the MocAthalon) That said, I like the cocked foot, and it's well proportioned. What's left to say? A vote! Yep, you have my vote. Congratulations, and best of luck with the other judges.

Quoting Ape Fight A fitting finale to a wonderful competition. I know I'm a car guy, and yours are amongst the very very best, but I'm gonna say this is the most amazingest thing you've ever built. Well, maybe jointly with that Mini... It's a superb MOC, beautifully presented and laced with your marvellous wit and thoughtful details. Topsy looks uncannily like the gf too, I may have to build her as a present. A stupendous end and one heck of an act to follow - congratulations on a truly top class build, your success in the Olympics so far, and on a possible outright win. 10/10, and I've run out of complimentary adjectives : )

Incredible! The use of the old LEGO Family sets from the 70s! WoW! All I could think of was when is LEGO going to do a circus theme? They have done a lot of minifigures in the Collectible Series to warrant this! and PLAYMOBIL has been successful during the years with the theme! Hey an idea...can you add a LION act and a Circus Clown? Please! For round 8! A clown car and lion cage and lion tamer would be great as well as a tight rope walker!

Amazing, now with less technic and more amazing detail! Topsy is probably the nicest figure I've ever seen built, I really like the legs. The elephant is special too and I like the use you found for the rail pieces, I have loads of those at home (the original old ones). A 10 out of 10, no doubt!

A fitting finale to a wonderful competition.
