Galek
The fallen hero...
About this creation

Name: Galek
Species: Toa
Race: Ta-Matoran
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Allegiance: Brotherhood of Makuta
Occupation: Asassin, Makuta agent
Element: Shadow
Powers: Heat Vision, shadow projection, shadow covering
Kanohi: Kideli, mask of Heat Vision
Little information is known about Galek, the Toa of Shadow. He was one of the Toa Mokha, the same Toa team that included Jethryn. From what little information Jethryn has given about his Toa life, we can assume that Galek was responsible, at least in part, for the downfall and destruction of his Toa team.
He was presumed dead after his failed mission, but in actuality, he was alive, but sleeping. A Makuta found him and used shadow leeches to convert the Toa to his side. Galek's first assignment as a Toa of Shadow was to destroy the Toa Heistra, a modern Toa team, and complete Eltre's transformation to shadow.

Fourth Wall comments:
So, I was forced to take a MOCing break a few weeks ago. Then, when I returned, I wasn't feeling like I could MOC very well. So, I decided to take it easy, not overdo myself, and begin with a normal Toa.
Then the next category for the BIONICLE MOCing challenge came up. "Shadow Toa". Possibly the most difficult round so , since the category relied on aesthetics without any predetermined design. My only real information on the topic was Takanuva and the Shadow Matoran--and neither of these had lost their original Toa color, just had more black than normal. So that's what I went for.
Galek is one of my oldest BIONICLE character concepts. He was in Jethryn's team from the start, though his character has transitioned from being a normal, ideal Toa to a jealous and violent leader. I was going to make him as a pit prisoner for BMC round two, but I was in a sort of MOCing block then as well, and didn't get past the legs. He never had any special things, which is why I chose him as a run-of-the-mill Toa (in design, not in character.)

So, front image.

Back view.

Lower legs. The legs are new and experimental designs. I wanted to get rid of my normal leg design which didn't look too good. The basis of the new design came when I was trying to fit side and front armor on the legs for Deaskuth (I built him just before the MOCing hiatus, so he's unfinished.) The basis is the Inika shoulder armor which connects to the balljoint socket, which holds the Hero Factory limb that provides the kneejoint. I tried a couple different variations until I came to Galek's current leg design.

Upper legs. The upper legs too are an experiment. I wanted to bend the knee-joint socket 90 degrees to get closer to normal human range of movement.

One example of the new range of movement.

"My precious..."

Torso. He uses my normal waist design, which rotates the spine that the upper torso is based upon. His torso is rather simple, using Technic liftarms to shape the shoulders. He also has a heartlight. He originally used a yellow half-bushing heartlight, but that didn't fit, so I replaced it. Yes, the reason you cannot find this brick in your bins is because it isn't normal: it's this piece, and the top part got broken off a couple of years ago. I happened to have it on hand when I was finishing Galek up, so I used it.

Back. Possibly the only place I will use the Vorox armor piece, which I only have one of.

Arms. I suffer from this psychological issue where I favor legs over arms, and don't want to do more on the arms than I could do on the legs. That's why the lower arms are Metru arms. The upper arms actually look pretty nice to me, compared to the original skinny arms.

My first custom head in months. And I only did it because I don't have any normal dark red Kanohi. Since I'm not sure that exposed Glatorian heads work on Toa, I tried making a custom construct for Malum's helmet (or, as I consider it, the Kanohi Kideli). The only problem is that gravity keeps pulling the head down off the mask.

Well that's Galek. So what time is it? ~looks up virtual calendar~ Ah, December. It's finally here. Time of the SMoT... and apparently the EBC... and this LOM contest... I've got my hands full. But, I have a new plan. I'll be revamping Jethryn, giving him an archenemy at last, and giving each of them teams--consisting of my entries to my various competitions. I'm hoping I can pull it off. (And also, in order to build Jeth's archenemy, I'll have to take this guy apart. Drat.)
So, comments, ratings, critiques, and rants (especially concerning the legs) are welcome below.

He is pretty good... Like your photos... I am interacting with you here and on iBrick, with certain things, so am I doomed?

I think that enough of this MOC shows to make me think you've done a good job, albeit the low-quality photos. Regardless, I think this MOC deserves a QCA score of 10/3/4 for a total of 17. Best of luck!

The MOC looks great! There's some excellent details here, but I agree with the others. I would retake the photos so we can fully appreciate the build. Keep up the good work!

Quoting [ Chro ] (... seriously, take better pics. I see some MOCs with bad photos and ignore them, but I think this MOC is good enough to deserve better photos.)
That would be my photoshopping and trying to get an all-white background. I could replace those with the originals--or are the issues with the darker colored ones? (I really wish I had your background...)

One of your best MOCs. Can't wait to see more.

Halhi's right - the horrific picture quality significantly detracts from the MOC, which appears to be better than all of your others. :P

Quoting Declan Muller Whoops! No daleks here! Still, its a great MOC. To bad that IT MUST BE EXTERMINATED!
I made up the name before I ever heard of Doctor Who--it actually came from changing around the letters of the Force Unleashed protagonist.

Quoting Indy * I must say, this looks GREAT. I never really wanted to say it before, but most of your earlier torso designs looked very clunky. This fixes it for me. :P Well done!
Heh. Guess this proves, a simple torso design (Which actually came from the 2005 titans) is probably the best. Thanks for supporting that idea.

If it weren't for the wfl photos this would be pretty fantastic... As it is, it's still a very nice build. Funny that you mentioned favoring legs over arms, legs are my least favorite part of a bio MOC...

Like what X said down there, this is by far your best moc I've seen till now. Looks a bit like malum with green eyes but that's just me. Great work on the legs and torso! :)

Quoting X ~ Wait the SMoT is coming already? I better enter... Anyway IMO Galek is one of your best works in a long time. It almost beats Jethryn IMO. I really like the new leg and torso designs. Great job! :) And can't wait for Jethryn's updates along with all the new characters you mentioned!
He beats Jethryn IMO as well. In fact, Jethryn V3 is probably going to look a lot like him. Especially since you like the new leg/torso designs.
