M.O. Round 6: matt rowntRee vs. Delatron 3000 - Yipe.
You're Dethpicable!!! Depict a Loony Tunes character in the throes of an unfortunate slapstick moment.
About this creation
The link to my equally deranged and awesome opponent Stu is HERE
The link to the MocOlympics is HERE

What do Looney Tunes mean to me? Childhood innocence? Carefree youth? Fleeting nostalgia for a gentler time? ABSOLUTELY NOT! The antics of all the loveable characters were the introduction into truly twisted humor. And, I thank the creators for that wonderfully ultra-violent baptism. I grew up with Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck (my personal favorite), and of course the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. The nostalgia I feel for these cartoons is for a time when animation was horrifically violent and parents knew it as did the children watching it. (Please note that they were watching it together.) There was no doubt that when you take a shotgun blast to the face, your “bill” won’t spin freely around your head. It was a given, and the animators ascended the throne of ridiculousness to show that violence can be unbelievably funny and preposterous. And, more to the point, they knew that we knew. They continued to produce the “no holds barred” violent slapstick comedy that has become the simile when referring to crazy violence. Case in point, I had a neighbor that told me that his wife would get drunkenly violent and hit him over the head with a cast iron skillet. My reaction wasn’t a show of care and sympathy; it was to laugh hysterically. I know, not very appropriate, but really funny nonetheless. Thank you Looney Tunes!

Looney Tunes elevated slapstick humor to a true Art form by not just showing ludicrous violence but adding the “insult to injury”. The “prestige” of the cartoon world. No cartoon displayed this better than the Roadrunner and Coyote. The insipidly “genius” plots to get the Roadrunner not only failed miserably but also set in motion a string of progressively worsening acts of atrocity on the Coyote. Brutally entertaining and hilarious. Not only do the rocket skates malfunction, sending the Coyote headlong to impale himself into the overhanging cliff above, but it just happens to be where he has stored all of his explosives from prior attempts to capture the Roadrunner who is now, unfortunately, perched on the detonator. All that’s left to do is hold up a sign that sums up everything and await the obligatory BOOM!

Watch for falling anvils and enjoy.

Have brain, will travel. Through rock! Well, mostly anyways.

MEE BEEP!

Says it all.

BOOM!

More BOOM!!!

Who thinks this stuff up? Geniuses!

Pfffffft.

Watch for falling anvils.

What? Did you think I was joking? What are you, some sort of Ultra-maroon?

THE classic detonator. Please note that there’s nothing holding the Roadrunner up other than MAD SKILLZ. Okay more balance than anything and an uncontrollable urge to not breathe.

Mmmm, deserty goodness.

Da structure. Breakin’ out the Duplo. Oh yeah! In it to win it!

And, the parting shot. That’s all folks!

Fourth wall: First off, again, I want to thank the judges for a truly awesome category. I don’t think there is a more universally appealing and boundlessly enjoyable subject as Looney Tunes. The research alone brought a smile to my face. So, thank you for that aspect. In addition, this was wonderfully challenging. Creating something so iconic and making it recognizable in Lego was difficult on its own. Recreating a snapshot of THE slapstick moment was nearly impossible. Looney Tunes exists contextually, so without the buildup, it’s just a cute character getting blown to smithereens. (Although, that does have its merits.) I decided to show a conglomeration of scenes with no particular reference to pull directly from. It instead relies on the viewer to read the story in the single shot. The rocket skates impale the Coyote helplessly in the outcrop, the realization of the poor choice of where to place the explosives yields a hopeless sign and expression, the Roadrunner ironically perches on the plunger, the rest is inevitable. Enjoyably inevitable. And it’s that moment just before that is the pure satisfaction we all know and love. That is the moment when slapstick transcends barbarism and becomes genius. As for the anvils, well, they’re just superfluously fun and equally silly. BTW the sign is OSHA approved. ;)

Secondly, I want to thank Stu for being a sounding board in these MocOlympics up until this last round. It killed me not being able to run my ideas past you seeing that we are of like minds, equal distemper, and similarly sick humor. I sincerely wish you the best of luck and will be more than happy with either outcome. Either way, the first round is still on me. Cheers Mate!

And lastly, I want to thank the other competitors and all of the supporters of these MocOlympics. Fantastic builds, excellent competition, and outstanding input. Cheers to all!

Quoting Isaiah Marc This is an all time classic creation and cartoon, totally unique! This would make a hit series if you did other cartons, maybe... - Bugs Bunny - Tasmanian devil - and other looney tunes characters!
Thank you Isaiah! I wouldn't mind doing more cartoons from my childhood, this one sort of wiped me out though. All the Looney Tunes are ripe with imagery worthy of a moc. A definite possibility for future builds.

Quoting Tommie muis i like it but what is it
Thank you Tommie! I understand that you live in the Netherlands, I think in France the cartoon was called Mip-Mip or Beep-Beep, it might be the same in your area. It basically followed the antics of the Coyote's crazy schemes to capture the Roadrunner. They always ended poorly for him and the Roadrunner always got away. The schemes were fairly violent and always funny, but he kept at it. The cartoon was along the same lines as Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. You should check them all out. You'll have a laugh! Thanks for stopping by and enjoy the show!

Thank you David! The Roadrunner was a royal pain. He has two non-connections (the top of his head and where his neck sits in his body) AND he is balanced on the detonator. I have no clue as to how he stayed perched there for the entire photo shoot. It was one of those don't breathe moments. ;)

Quoting Topsy Creatori (StoveTopCreator!) Matt, I had been temporarily away from and only sporadically viewing the pages when I returned to find that several judges had already begun voting on the entries. I really feel uneasy about commenting after judges have begun voting and if I do, I try to be careful with my words as I do not have the gift of the word as you do. This round’s categories offered all 4 of you super themes in which to build. I liked both yours and Stu’s take on the category, but your attention to the extra details such as the explosives and the strata layers in the plateau tipped your build towards favoring you with the win in my eyes and now, more importantly in the judges! Cheers and congrats on your advancement! :)
Thank you Topsy! I've always valued your input and humor, I think you to be a fine wordsmith. I understand about commenting during judging though, kind of a "tread lightly" feel. I absolutely love Stu's characters and I knew that I had to throw everything at him. Hopefully I can do the same with Nick, he is going to be massively tough. Thanks again Topsy, as always, I look forward to your comments! And of course Technic Ted. ;)

The rumble of Lego and the lisp of Daffy yelling "Duck theathon, FIRE!" are some warm and fuzzy memories forever linked together in my mind as well. Makes you wonder if there's some psychological profile we fit that will be studied by "top men" somewhere in the future. ;) Thank you Mark!

Quoting Dave Kaleta Matt, You have a truly epic run going in these games, one I don't want to see stop. One of the favorite details of your build for me is the way Coyote's "Yipe" sign is held at a slight angle - those are the kinds of little details that help bring the viewer into the work and help it become so pleasing to the eye. Congratulations on another wonderful build. ~Dave
Thank you Dave! I hoped a keen eye like yours would pick that detail up. It almost seems subconscious to do, but I spent a good amount of time rotating the sign as well as his dangling legs to get the right position. Once I got it and attached him to the outcrop, I changed it all again. It was a subtle detail that I actually had to walk away from several times to come back with a fresh perspective. Thank you for your wonderful input and confidence. I'm honored and humbled.

Agreed. Why was he in Enter the Dragon anyway? Because he can do a bit of Karate? So what. Why then did he become the face of Kung Fu Theater? Why not Chuck? Who knows? He always seemed so intense about it but completely inept. Guess he was the 70s version of Steven Segal. At least Saxon could act. Okay, a bit of a stretch, but still valid. ;) This is not a chawade!

Thank you David! I'm glad that it hits on a chord of recognition and fond familiarity. The category is open to the "no way, I remember that" kind of feel. And you just never forget Acme. EVER! ;)

Quoting Delatron 3000 Oh mate, I have had a morning to forget - I woke up with a headache, went to the Dentist which is going to cost me and then I checked MOCpages! I have been handed a kicking here Matt, it's superb. The total scene is brilliant and packed with clever details. The sign is excellent construction, but that goes right throughout the build and it just looks 'right'. I can't say i'm happy to be out, but if I had to go out then this is a fair beating to have to leave on. Your builds have been great throughout the contest and i'm convinced that you can go on and win the whole thing now. I can look forward to a few nights off at least. Well, that and a massive sort :( Congratulations brother, win it for VLUG. As for me (and I can't believe no-one got this in so far) a-ba-be-be-b-be-be, that's all folks!
Stu, you were the one man I feared on this side of the brackets. Your humor and connection with the viewer shows a soul that is formidable and fierce. YOU are a true builder that creates from the heart and that is unpredictable and awe inspiring every time. Your characters in this round show that amazing ability. (BTW best title ever!) I knew if I had any chance that I would have to throw everything at you, and believe me when I say that this wiped me out. I'm am honored to be in the same competition as you, to even go up against you, but more importantly, I'm humbled by the fact that I can honestly call you friend. Thank you so much for everything Stu! And I hope your feeling better, I might know a dentist out in Vermont that might help. ;)

Oh man such a great category! Love Roadrunner cartoons so much. Roadrunner's eyes and his tail are expertly done and Wile E, poor Wile E is just perfection. Falling anvil sign?! You actually made a falling anvil sign out of Lego? You're mad! The whole scene here is mint, I love the canyon rock work.

Matt, You have a truly epic run going in these games, one I don't want to see stop. One of the favorite details of your build for me is the way Coyote's "Yipe" sign is held at a slight angle - those are the kinds of little details that help bring the viewer into the work and help it become so pleasing to the eye. Congratulations on another wonderful build. ~Dave

Quoting Stuart Lucas Ahh, seven shades of awesomeness here. Seeing two masters of comedy building go head-to-head in a category so tailored to your talents was a mouth-watering prospect, and the outcome certainly doesn't disappoint. This scene sums up everything great about the Road Runner cartoons to a tee; I was just thinking 'where's the Acme product?' when I got to the close-up of the rocket skates crate. So, perfect! And build-wise the falling anvils sign is a work of genius. I'm off to look at Stu's entry now, good luck!
Thank you Stuart! I too was looking forward to this. Just competing with Stu was going to be great fun and incredibly challenging, but to land this particular category... Dream come true! I knew I had to throw EVERYTHING and a little more at him. This was my honor to go up against him regardless of the outcome.

Quoting MCLegoboy ! Instant recognition. Looney Tunes is still aired on Cartoon Network every weekday at Noon. Unforunately, that means just about nobody gets to see it, but still, at least they can still be enjoyed. I love these guys. Probably my favorite character is Daffy Duck, and so that would explain why Duck Amuck, and Duck Dogers in the 241/2th Century are some of my favorite episodes. The whole build you did here is fantastic and I got everything. I even got the falling anvil sign before you said what it was. And nice balancing with the Road Runner. The Yipe sign really sells it though, a small detail but if it wasn't there, the build just wouldn't be the same. Good luck!
Thank you MC! I'd have to agree about Daffy, the WW2 episodes where he is fighting "a whole meth of Methersmidts" is still one of my all time favorites. CN needs to show them on Adult Swim, more people would watch them especially the older episodes. The entire scene was born from my brain as a conglomerate of images and situations that I remembered. All the little details, like the sign, were the things that I picked up originally as being total lunacy at work. To think this stuff up originally must have been the best job ever for any animator worth his salt. Thanks again. I'm still in absolute shock that the Roadrunner stayed perched through the whole shoot. ;)

Quoting Halhi 141 I love just about everything about it! While the rocks are repetitive, I think that's a good thing in this case as they give it a very cartoony nature. My favorite detail is probably the "Watch for Falling Anvils sign", that's a really clever design. Good luck!

The fact that you chaps are going stronger than ever—I’d go so far as to say that this Round has produced the best in show thus far—is a testament to each of your masterful abilities with the brick. Bravo! But as you're well aware, I unfortunately have to pick between you and your opponent's entries. If the Round had been strictly based around character design, I think Stu woulda' nudged you out. As that's not the case however, you've got my vote Matt. It really means a lot to me that you take time to comment on my creations; any feedback from pros like you is encouraging. Well done and best of luck!
Well Alex, where do I start? First of all, know that all the comments that I give are because I love seeing all the possibilities and potential in everyone here on MP. The medium in which we "play" is just as valid as oils to a painter or clay to a sculptor. This is all ART and we are ALL pros. Critical encouragement is vital to the process and the sound progression of this REAL Art form. Your own comments to me mean more to me than I can express, after all, I am still less than a year old on MP. The input from wonderful builders such as yourself encourages me to push my limits into builds I would have never imagined attempting. For that alone, I will never adequately thank you enough. This is a beautiful and unique culture to be a healthy part of and it is I that strives to be a master like everyone else here, including you. I've learned more about techniques and style in the past year than in the entire 35+ years I have been playing with Lego. Even old lunatics like me are still happily and graciously learning. Thank you Alex, for everything!

Quoting clayton Marchetti Saturday morning cartoons ,cold pizza and chocolate milk ! Awesome. I'll admit I cheered for the Coyote. Brother this is magnificent! The layers in the rock are spot on. I love the falling anvil sign ,and the anvils that prove the signs worth. I can see Wiley strapping on the skates and wondering why nothing has happened and then wizing out of control to end up where he is now then BOOM! You really outdone yourself on the figures Wiley stuck there with the Yipe sign (where does he keep all those signs?) and the roadrunner amazingly perched on the plunger looks incredible . I love the black barrel that says TNT btw. Brilliant and entertaining entry! Hope I didn't miss anything :-)
You forgot my awesome use of Duplo. =D Thank you Brother! For me, it was a heaping bowl of Cheerios in ICE cold milk. Saturday mornings were special to me in all seriousness. I can remember starting every one at 6:00 to watch Rat Patrol, then on to three and a half hours of Looney Tunes and Superfriends and such, then Mission Impossible at 10:00, and various Kung Fu Theater or Godzilla movies afterwards. All while playing with Lego. My fondest memories growing up. Thank you again Brother, for bringing those back. ;)

Thank you Lee! I tried to get every detail, within reason, that was bounding about my head. The sign I just couldn't resist doing. That little dose of pure lunacy in an utterly ridiculous situation was inspired by Looney Tunes themselves. Kinda convenient. ;)

Quoting Matt Bace Unbelievably awesome! Man, does this MOC bring back some memories. I think I pretty much OD'ed on the Roadrunner as a kid, but I my favorite for the ultra-violent content might still have been Tom and Jerry. The details you've captured in this MOC are simply fantastic. First, Wile E. and Roadrunner look great -- I think you got their expressions down just right (including the "Yipe" sign). Then, there are the requisite anvils, complete with the "falling anvil" sign, which is a really nice touch. And of course there is dynamite, and plenty of it, too -- because when Wile E. does something, he does it big. The rock formation is just a backdrop, but it looks great, too.
Thank you Matt! I always love Looney Tunes but I have to admit that Tom and Jerry was my all time favorite too. I tried to get as much ridiculous detail as I could and the sign was just that touch of lunacy that made me laugh out loud. That was my first try at rock work and I'm pleased with how it turned out although I don't think I liked doing it that much mainly because of the grey and bley bricks I have.
