About this creation
Here we have my latest build, SS1 Gladiator Class Starfighter. This is my entry into the 1st MOX PRIZE -- SPACE SUPERIORITY FIGHTER contest, put on by Ron L. Mitchell. If you haven’t been by the group to check it out, click here. There are quite a few top notch entries in there well worth the look. This is the type of stuff I’m normally building, so this contest was right up my alley. Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed it.

So, my ship is equipped with 8 wide-set cannons for pursuit-based short range fighting, and 8 long-range missiles for…you know… those hard to reach places. I wanted this ship to have the feel of not only being heavily armed, but heavily armored, so it would look like if the cannons were inoperable and the missile supply were exhausted, it could just fly straight through the hull of its target. I like how it turned out.

I continued down this path of plate-based shaping that I have been on, and tried to use the wedge plates in as many places as I could for the sake of that shaping. And of course, I greebled it half to death. I went through and doctored all of the photos that I planned on posting, but it was only partially because of my addiction to GIMP. My normal white cloth was washing out the white wings, (used strictly for mounting missiles, mind you), so I had to come up with something darker. What I found was a sheet that really looked ugly in the background but put some life back in the white parts. I couldn’t stand how the background looked, so I went crazy with the editing.

Lastly, I would like to thank Ron for putting this contest together and inviting me to partake. I also want to thank Matt Rowntree for suggesting that I be invited.

Thanks, guys.

Let’s have a look.

This ship has two types of engine. The six along the sides are for maneuverability, the one in the middle is strictly for speed, should the pilot be in a hurry to get into the fray, or, for that matter, in a hurry to get out of it.

Here is good look at both sets of engines.

The cannons in action.

This is one of my favorite shots.

Here is the cockpit. No, the cockpit is not open in space. See, no stars.

These next few shots are just to show off some of the details of the MOC.

A couple shots to show the ship on its stand.

Bonus pic! Yep, you guessed it. The ship with the astonishingly ugly background.

Thanks for taking a look! What do you think? And if you are competing in the contest, best of luck to you.

Amazing ship! Love the greebling and the editing, wow, the editing! I'm gonna try out your ship building technique after I post my mech - I've built some micro fighters for it ;)

Quoting matt rowntRee SWEEEEET! Absolutely fantastic Tim. I knew you would throw together an impressive showing and you have certainly not let me down. I love the fact that it reminds me of the Gunstar from "The Last Starfighter". Your color blocking and perfect greebling are stunning. I love the layered angle plates, seems intensely strong. That is a ship designed to win battles and contests. Just beautiful!
Thanks a lot, Matt. Glad you like it. Here's hoping it does well in the contest. It's funny you say Gunstar. That was one of my favorite spaceships as a kid and is now one of my bucket list MOCs. Gonna be some tricky shaping on that one.

That's an honour Tim, glad I could in a way set a bar :) And thanks for your vote, I appreciate it. I voted for you as well, as your ship would defenitely kick a** out there. The style and presentation of it is also beautiful. You said it well; tough competition! All the more fun and excitement. GL to you as well m8.

Quoting David Alexander Smith Super stuff. Possibly the most consistent build I've seen yet from you; and you've turned out some beauties before. The shaping really reminds me of the X Bomber from Star Fleet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Bomber). I think you may have a good shot at this contest.
Thanks for the compliment, David. I hope I do have a shot in this one, though I think I may have hurt my chances by not throwing in some uncommon part and making it work for the MOC. However, it's the best single-manned craft I've come up with yet.

Thanks, Pico. The competition was stiff. I saw yours as the one to beat, which is why you got my vote, (as much as that pained me;)). Best of luck, my friend.

Thanks, Pete. It's to pieces now. To be honest, it was halfway there by the time you posted this comment. I was trying to get a VV in before the end of Nnovvember, but I obviously failed there. Oh well, I'll crank it out eventually.

Quoting David Roberts I like how the smooth lines of the cockpit area contrast with the complex styling of the engines. The back-end reminds me of the front of the "Liberator" from Blake's 7. A super looking build.
Thanks, David. Took a while to get the picture in my head of what I wanted to come up with, but I think your description fits pretty closely to what I was going for. Thanks for the compliment.

This is a really beautiful build, amazingly rich in detail and with excellent photo-editing. The shaping around the cockpit is possibly my favourite bit. You are clearly in your element here and deservedly one of the front runners in the contest! Good luck Tim!

Without a doubt my favourite ship from the competition. You went all out here, and I am amazed by the quality design. The outriggers are a fantastic touch, and I really like the cockpit. I think what really makes this stand out is the attention to detail though, you perfectly greebled every surface - even the bottom! Brilliant build, best of luck in the contest.

I must say that this creation is worthy of your name. Your creations have very high standard generally. Using of several plates with details, angling of ships parts, very healthy balance between straight and detailed design are all very eye-cathing features. It seems to me as you picked a style that is usually used on BSG or SW SHIPS and it fits very well to this fighter. Great work! :D

When I first looked at this design I thought the wing pylons were on hinges and that they could fold up into the body for more compact storage or high speed travel. After going back I see now they are for support only. Doesn't matter though because she is still a great design and a real front runner for the prize!
