G1 Metroplex - A Titan Class Transformer
....The largest Transformer built in Lego????
About this creation
Blogged by the Lego Car Blog Nov 16, 2013, and I was added to their Master Mocer interviewee list: click here for the post.
.
Well I have finished two major and large projects in the last two weeks, this one is perhaps the largest functioning Lego Transformer on the net, I present to you G1 (Titan) Metroplex! This guy was both a joy and learning experience to build with many functions, joints and gearing I had to design to make it all work to mimic the functions of his not so large G1 toy. This incarnation of Metroplex is a staggering 33 inches tall in robot mode, maybe a little taller if you start counting antennae, 30lbs of Lego goodness and I have lost track of how much money or Lego elements were required for this build! Plex is now my Largest Lego Transformers creation but my second largest (single) Lego build ever. He has lots of play features for my godson to mess around with in all the modes and can fit minifigs or Kreons in different command or play areas, like the chest control room (all modes) or various workstations/ repair bays in his legs in city mode. Likely he will stay in Robot mode guarding the door to my workshop for now as he is too big for my display case. I am very happy with the final product and will make a shipping crate so I can bring him to upcoming events. So the only thing left to say is sit back, check it out and enjoy!

Keep it tuned to my MOCpage for more exciting MOCs from all genres!

OMG!!! WOOOOOW!! Just looking at the size of the "hands" and the rifles... This big boy must be pretty heavy! The level of playability and details is truely amazing. Brilliant work here! Could you add a pic with some micro-mechs aside by Metroplex?

It might well be the biggest. I haven't been able to verify that there is any functioning legoformer out there bigger than him yet.
Quoting Starscream Soundwave Now that is something else. Would I be right in thinking that this is the largest ever fully transforming Legoformer? I am quite literally lost for words...

Quoting Delatron 3000 Oh my! This weighs over twice what my automata from a few weeks ago did and that covered two baseplates! We know you can combine great aesthetics and neat functions but the sheer scale of this beastie is simply impressive Chris, well done.

Thanks, It's a bottom heavy boat anchor in Robot mode... I would not spend all that time and money to have it go boom, LOL! No Sixgun planned, Scamper maybe and you must have missed Slammer's post a while back you need him for transformation of city mode right arm tower. As for orange bricks - if I ever get that insane - that inferred creation may flatten me quite literally!
Quoting Raymond Drum If I didn't know better I would have thought I was looking at the actual toy! Not enough smiley faces to rate this one. This is truly an achievement. The fact that he stands unassisted is amazing and I knew you would figure out how to get the left arm to work. Now you just need a few pictures with his 'minions': Sixgun and Scamper I believe? I haven't read any of the other comments as of yet so I don't know if it was asked but, does the chest right side ramp open and extend? So, how is the collecting of orange bricks coming along? ;)

thanks this build was both fun and challenging. But I think the final product was worth it.
Quoting matt rowntRee Well there's something you don't see everyday in Lego. XD Holy Toledo! That is truly impressive Chris. I am so fascinated by your joint construction. On this level of scale, friction just ain't enough staying power. What you have achieved here is a master class. And then to get the aesthetic spot on... WOW! This is the standard by which all Legoformers shall forever be judged. Congratulations on one of the finest engineering/Lego accomplishments to date! Kudos!

I do have an engineering background you know :). It was still difficult though to get the weight to joint ratio just right in Lego! But the lower half deceivingly is heavier than the top to assist with stability and my 4 year old godson has helped with its durability testing thru the construction phase.
Quoting Jackal :] Wow. How on earth does that stand?

  November 12, 2013
yes I d did. I had to play a lot of trial and error to deal with joints and the weight of this guy!
Quoting Stuart Lucas What can I say? Truly a colossal achievement! This is not only your biggest, but possibly your best Legoformer to date in terms of recapturing the look and the playability of the origianl toy. At 30 lb in weight the fact that he even stands up is highly impressive, you must have invented some new joint mechanisms. Well done indeed!

Robot mode / vehicle mode is extremely stable due to the legs being heavier than the upper body - my godson has been testing it through the construction phase without incident - The arms can get a bit dodgy in city / tower mode - But I think his main display mode will be Robot Mode anyway since it takes up the least amount of floor space in my workshop .. and it looks so cool! :)
