About this creation
Category - Pair Dare: Select two specific kinds of pieces (for example: the 1x2 brick and the jumper-plate) and then create a MOC using ONLY those two specific kinds. Feel free to use multiple colors of those bricks but they must be ONLY those two bricks. Choose wisely!

My fellow countryman Stuart Lucas For the second year in a row we are guaranteed a Brit in the semi-finals. There is also Nick Barrett on the other side of the draw who could make two Brits from four players in R6, so good luck Nick and Stu - Rule Britannia!

The official name for pieces, bits, parts, bricks, etc. is ‘elements’ according to TLG. The word elements also inspired my build………

A wizard summoning elementals for battle.

I chose to use as my two elements plate, 1x2 and round plate, 1x1. I knew I had a lot of these in certain colours and should I need them, more (hopefully) available in large quantities from PAB. Also, they offered a lot of versatility. Stack three plates and you have a brick. Use the rounds and plates together and you can make curved structures. Hopefully my scene demonstrates a good variety of what is achievable with only those two.

Better still, they were mostly sorted already! I did scour my collection for more, including my last three builds from the contest that were barely sorted. I then visited a PAB wall and found the lavender colour that I have used for the wizard’s robes. Here’s a picture or two of my ‘palette’.

The Wizard was the first part of the build to go together. Given the pieces I was using I had to come up with interesting methods to reverse direction in some areas – He is essentially several parts which slot together, tongue and groove style. My wife loves him – he might never be taken apart!

Next came the water elemental. This is actually version 2.0, the first was too similar to the fire elemental which followed and I scaled it down on the second time to better suit the composition. Like all the elemental designs, I referred back to the Dungeons & Dragons Monstrous Manual for some inspiration. Here it was to be a living wave.

The fire elemental. This was to be a living flame with a wicked grin. The hardest part here was finding a method to make him stand up as he’s a 1-brick thick curve. That and photographing him against a red background – please excuse the abrupt change in background!

Next came the air elemental. The idea here was to make a being that looked ethereal, without solid component but still a visible creature. I was also eager to try and imply the movement of wind while demonstrating a different technique for curvature to the other two elementals.

Lastly, the earth elemental. I made a conscious decision to make him blocky and squared-off. No curves, just angles. Likewise, I used no trans-colours and no 1x1 rounds, just sticking to 1x2’s in earthy colours. I really like the contrast.

If I had more pieces in the right colours…… well, that could be said of any build but I would have liked to build a floor. Maybe a second wizard and have a duel?

I was not thrilled with this category when I read it at first, but as soon as I settled on a couple of elements to use and sketched a few ideas down I was into it. I would heartily recommend it to anybody wanting to flex their building muscles and stretch their collection. It is a real technical challenge and once my involvement in the MOC-Os is done, I think I will run a contest based on it. Watch this space…..

Oh, and photographing a variety of trans colours is awful. The fire, air and water elementals really do look loads better in reality than the photos show but I couldn’t settle on a backdrop that suited everything.

Round 5 and a minifig still hasn’t appeared!

I hope to see you in R6.

Yours,

The Delatron

Hi Stu, was just wandering through the pages and realized I forgot to comment on this - it's about time! Wonderful creation! I recall you thought of making a contest in the spirit of this category. Are you still planning it? Are you still bricking? Regards, Tom

A masterful demonstration of what is achievable with only two elements. The wizard is so ace, as are the elementals. Two elements plus four elementals equals trip to next round! Congrats, my Brit-bro, can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next!~H

Tough call, but in the end, you've got my vote! I think the other Stuart's selection of bricks was little more interesting (what with the slopes), but your build takes the cake.

The way you've managed this with just those two pieces is pure magic. The wizard is built so expertly it makes me wonder why we even need so many elements in the Lego inventory. Its just spellbinding.

A more playful version of the Avatar series. Goodness, you've got a lot of studs and 1x2s. I mean I know they're common but still.

Magnificent building Stu! I considered this pair of elements as an option too - if I lived anywhere near a Lego store, I might have gone for it. As it is I'm glad we took a contrasting approach, and I have to agree with your wife, the wizard is marvellous, although all the elementals are great too. Good luck and go team GB!

Stu, both you guys knocked this category outta the park! What a crazy challenge perfectly executed. The curves and textures created by this are fantastic. There isn't a single thing that I can't love about this. That wizard is a definite keeper, the effect achieved with the eyes is sweeeeet! I do believe that this category is going to go down to the wire quite gloriously. GB has been well represented with some of the finest builds to date. Stupendous and good luck!
