Although I'm not new to Lego, this is my first proper MOC. And it's the legendary Trabant 601 in Combi version, made in the Deutsche Demokratische Republic's city Zwickau in 1963–1991. With the noisy two-stroke two-cylinder engine, smoky exhaust and duroplast bodyparts, it was one of the most typical cars of the eastern communist block. A similar green one was owned by my grandfather, who finally sold it only a few years ago. When I once asked him, why he chose the wild green color he replied: "They called me that a batch of brand new Trabants had arrived and I was the one in order on the waiting list. I hurried there immediately to be able to choose a color. When I came there, there were 20 of them standing and each and every one of them bright green!"
I am more or less a beginner in Lego MOC building, so I foolishly tried to achieve maximum functionality and best looks at the same time. I soon found out, is pretty hard with not much previous experience. Nevertheless, I tried to learn and after more than a few total rebuilds, I managed to fit it with quite smooth steering (either the steering wheel or the "Hand of God" steering on the roof works, each with different ratio), opening doors, bonnet and boot (not a big range though).
Hope you enjoy it! Any comments and suggestions are more than welcome...
I placed original quality pictures also at Flickr.
Wow! -Excellent model! You have captured the looks perfectly. (But I especially like the back parts)
The real car is pretty indestructible, it´s body being made of fibre-glass. Unfortunatly the same could not be said about the rest, although easily repeared when damaged... A true "eastern" product!
Wow! That doesn't look like the work of an ameteur builder! Beautiful build, you've chosen the pieces very cleverly to create an appealing shape. I love it, and I can't wait to see some more creations from you!
