VENOM - SSF
My share in the first MOX prize competition, organized by Ron Mitchell.
About this creation

Mox prize: Space Superiority Fighter

Requirements:
  • Must have at least one pilot and therefore must have a cockpit of some sort.
  • Must have at least 2 weapons systems: near space attack & long range.
  • Consistent color theme.
  • Any "wings" are only struts to hold engines, weapons or sensors.
  • May launch from a deck, launcher bay, or be dropped from cradle.

VENOM - SSF

VENOM 85 docked in a hangar, hovering waiting for clearance

VENOM 85's Crew: Captain and gunner

Front view of the fighter. An overview of it's weapon loadout & the cockpit.

Side view, foldable wings demonstrated. The adjustable stance of the wings makes it versatile in combat. More speed vs agility and protection.

Rear view. The three main engines are visible, as well as the main acces hatch. Also the boosters and stabilyzers are shown beneath the wings and on the back-end of the 360 turrets.

Main hatch is opened, providing acces to the crew. A bit of the interior is visible, containing a ladder for upper level access, guns for the crew and a locker for repair equipment and the ship's black box.

Cockpit view with openend canopy

Cockpit empty, controls visible

Front bottom gun loadout

Defensive mechanism: the aurora laser turret auto tracks missiles and projectiles. The beam shoots them out of the skies before impact.

Two adjustable laser turrets on each flank. They turn with a near 360 angle. The plating adds to the structural integrity of the ship.

Now for some sceneries ;)

VENOM 85 displayed on patrol

Attack!

Space is trippy, but beautiful

Background

This is my creation for Ron Mitchell's MOX prize competition nov. 2013

I really enjoyed building this SSF (space superiority fighter) to the very last detail. It all began with some sketches I made about how the base shape needed to be, using several pre-selected parts in mind. For example I knew it needed a tri-pod landing gear, I just dig those. The cockpit shape, 2 levels: focus on gunnery and navigation. The sloped circular parts were also waiting, hoping to soon 'belong'. With that, some sketches turned into a base shape. It became sturdy as it progressed. I needed guns. Using some EVE standards I assembled the package and tada.. it became lethal. "A versatile fighter able to deal damage in several ways and in multiple directions". In the progress I replaced a top laser turret for a defensive anti-missile beam. Defense as well as offense, check. I hesitated to put an astromech droid up there as well, would have been a nice touch. Maybe I'll modify and add some pics in the future. The wings on VENOM were a bit of a pain but they turned out slick as hell in the end and adjustable as I intented. The different modes the fighter can shape into makes it interesting and fun to swoosh around. The upwards mode makes it look speedy and aggressive. Thanks to Ron for organizing the contest, It was fun to take part and to see the other entries. So much different angles, awesome.

I hope you guys enjoy it and by any means, do drop a comment and a likey!

Cheers Rick. Well, the first things you've brought to the table are related to two of my favorite games; EVE online and the Fallout series. So the math's quite easy! Seeing those builds brings me back to the many late nights spent grinding missions! ..maybe I'll reactivate my account some day ;)
Quoting Rick Livernois Another beautiful design! I am very intrigued by your work, and seeing what you have done makes me very honoured that you added me as a favourite for what little I have done. Thank you for your support! I look forward to browsing more of your models. Edit: I am so tickled by all of the EVE Online references. I love it :)

Thanks m8! I was looking for something out of the ordinary and gave thoughts to certain aspects of piloting and dogfights. The ability to adapt in combat is what formed the red line here.
Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Very innovative design, it looks like something from a movie like Alien.

Quoting Michal Hennel Made on professional level, and I think everyone who would see this MOC would say the same ... Great SNOT, saucer brick usage, cockpit design. This one has all the beauties of todays LEGO Space themes ... simply great :D

Quoting Lars Kumpfert Your venom has a heavy epic design, its so coooool! Really nice shaping, only problem: You doesnt need gatlin guns, if you can use laser ;PP Or what do you think?
Hey Lars, interesting question! It's all about having the advantage of multiple damage types. Each ship class will have a certain weakness. If a shield / armor / hull can take a lot of EM (electromagnetic) damage for example, you punish it with old fashion ammo, heat damage or kinetic damage. One -will- get through ;) Cheers!

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 very cool ship and presentation! a bit reminiscent of boba fet s design, great details for the cockpit, my fav part has to be the anti-missile cannon!
Thanks Frank! The cockpit is very typical indeed, it defines most of the starfighter's shape. Good luck on your build and most importantly, have fun!

Quoting Michael Rutherford Mr. van Grootveld. Way to set the bar! This is a very complicated and delightful build! Like Keith, I was especially taken with your presentation. The shot of the ship in the hanger is excellent... but I have to say that your sketch is REALLY interesting. Those are good sketches! The ship itself is sci-fi cool as well. Guns guns guns...and anything called a "Blood Claw" just has to be fun! Well done. Attack!
Thanks for liking and taking time to comment on my work. I'm glad you like it. Maybe I'll add some more sketches I have laying around. Cheers
