Steam Novel Chapter 07: Trapped
Okay, I have tonnes to be sorry about. So, I'm going to apologise about all the stuff and then get on with the chapter. First, sorry about the delay. It's taking forever to do these because of the yearly exams. It's going to get harder next year, but I promise it'll get better with time. Second, sorry about the other two chapters. It's taking a little longer to write those. They'll be here soon, though. Third, sorry about this chapter being so short. I didn't have much time. However, if you like them shorter, let me know. Well, that's it! Enjoy the chapter!
About this creation
The small group that had begun their mission in the sewers was now running frantically through this death-trap maze of tunnels. Everywhere around them, these robots were chasing them. James Wallace could defend with ease, and it was no problem for Arcan with his armour suit. But, sadly, Art was having a few problems handling his machetes. The mechanical monstrosities were picking up on this, and singling him out with their attacks. James shouted a few orders at the others.
“They seem to be attacking Artorious, because he’s lacking in fighting abilities! We need to protect him! Make sure you look in all directions!”
Of course, he was just stating the obvious. In most films, commanders shout out useless orders such as the one he had just said now. What most people don’t realise is that this is probably the only thing that comes to mind. This was an idea that had just come to Nick, and it ended in an argument with himself and James.
“I guess all those cheesy movie lines that people say in the middle of a battle make sense now!”
“Now’s not the time for shenanigans, so get into formation and attack!”
“Typical movie gun-ho hero.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing…”
James sliced the last robot in front of him, and the air stood still. Everybody looked around them, half expecting another robot to jump out of nowhere; its snake-like head hissing at them. James didn’t sheath his sword at this, but he did lower his arms slightly. Arcan, who’s scythe had now been separated into the rifle in one hand and the knife in the other, waited patiently for the next order. There was silence. More silence. Even more silence. Even more- CRASH! The sound came from a large piston that had just pushed a poor unsuspecting Artorious into a wall. James turned around quickly, confused about what was happening.
“Arty? ARTY!”
“Relax, he’s quite fine.”
The voice came from the loudspeakers. Quinton had once again found out where they were, and was excited to continue his game of tormenting.
“I want to play a little game with him. Don’t worry, I’m thirty-three percent sure he’ll survive. And if he does not, it’ll be a spectacular death for the newcomer. HEE HEE HEE!”
“What are you playing at, Quinton?”
“Oh, I’m just singling out the one person who might stop you from finding it.”
“What? What’s this ‘it’ thing you’re speaking about?”
“Ah ah ah! No spoilers! You wouldn’t simply go into a bookstore and shout out the last chapter of a premiered book, so why would I do the same?”
“What spoiler?”
“Not telling. Besides, what are you going to do? I’m all the way over here in my safe room, away from you, and you’re over there, not over here. You can’t threaten me, and I can do whatever I want to you. I could even kill you right now! But no, I don’t want to. You’re here to find out something, and you’re going to find out something.”
The sound of Quinton’s laughing could be heard echoing through the tunnels. Nick Cutter looked around to see if there were any more robots waiting to attack them. He then turned to James.
“What does he want us to find?”
“I think he wants me specifically to find it. I’m willing to bet it’s something to do with the night my family was killed. But we can’t play this game. We need to either find where Quinton is or an exit. Whichever comes first, we take it.”
“And what about Arty?”
“In this kind of situation, nothing can be done. We can only hope in our heart of hearts that he’ll survive whatever this mad scientist has planned for him…”
Artorious had fallen half unconscious while Quinton was delivering him to wherever he was now. All he could see around him was darkness, and it stayed that way for several minutes. Suddenly, he was brought back into the world with a large thump, as if he had been simply dropped on the ground. The first thing he felt was sand that he had somehow fallen on. He tried to pull himself up as his vision returned. As he could see again, he realised that some parts on the sand below him were covered in red liquid. As he was still a little shaken from the fall, he wasn’t thinking of anything but tomato sauce (or ‘ketchup’, for you Americans). But then, as he came to his senses, he realised that this was in fact blood. With this sudden realisation, he almost stumbled backwards. He quickly looked over his body, trying to see if any of the blood was his. Satisfied that there were no open wounds, he relaxed and stood up to take a look around the room. The room was very much like the one he’d been in earlier. It had a domed top (that he was hoping didn’t house any robots) and walls several metres high. The diameter was smaller, however, and there were no arched exits going to different sides. There was just one large door in front of him, and a large TV screen above it. The steampunk world did have TV capability, but it was not as high definition as our ones are. It was also still in the black and white stage, but it fortunately had sound. The TV switched on to reveal the grinning face of Quinton. His brows came closer together, making a rather evil face.
“Hello there, Artoruios Scrub.”
“So that’s what your mug looks like…”
“Indeed it does. I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced. I know who YOU are. After all, you’re only alive because of me.”
“Yeah right!”
“Oh no, it’s true. I convinced Longfellow to offer you a place on our team. That simply delayed him long enough for the other guys to arrive. Rather strange, isn’t it? Your life in my hands, and I spared it! Well, I think your life is about to get tampered with again.”
“What’s your game?”
“You should know; you’re playing it. Oh, I forgot to tell you who I am. You already know my name. I am Quinton Smith. What you don’t know is what I do. I am the lead scientist for Blood Brotherhood, and you are about to help me with some tests…”
The large door below the TV began to open up like a cat flap. Quinton chuckled in his usual maniacal way, before continuing his speech.
“This one’s quite a character. He’s the reason we were able to discover trans-universal travel. You see, he came from another universe involving some kind of death game. He was the only survivor, but they wanted to murder him anyway. For some reason, he found his way here. Sadly, he was no longer human after such an unprotected journey. We had to make a few, eh, adjustments.
The door came fully up. For a second, nothing came out. Then, the sound of metal being dragged along stone slowly came into hearing. From the blackness came a man with very overgrown hair that reached down to his shoulders. On his chest lay a blood-stained batman shirt, and his eyes couldn’t be seen through his silver sunglasses. If you could see them, though, you would know that these green glaring abysses were that a stone cold killer. In his hand or rather on his hand, was a huge sword. He wasn't holding it; it was fitted in to him arm, reaching all the way up to him upper bicep. The sword was black, with a thin blue line down the middle that glowed blue. Art stepped back a few steps. He shuddered, before raising his machetes to prepare for battle. Quinton continued.
“Quite the charmer, isn’t he. Now, down to business. If you can survive ten minutes fighting him, which I don’t think you can, I’ll let you live. If not, well that’s obvious.”
“Why are you giving me a chance?”
“To prove my hypothesis.”
“Which is?!”
“That’s for later. Survive and I might actually tell you. But enough talk. VANCOV, KILL THE MAN WHO STANDS BEFORE YOU!”
Vancov, readied his left sword arm for combat. Yes Vancov. That was all that he was called now. His first name was lost forever, however it had once been Ian. But that was long ago. Back then, he had been forced to kill all the people he cared about in a game of death. In a sense, some things had changed and others had not. They had not in the sense that he still killed, but they had in another. He was no longer the hunted; he was now the hunter.

Quoting Sam Sanister It's not about the length of the chapter, it's about how well the contents are written. That being said, this was interesting to read.
I know this isn't as interesting as the last part of this side story, but the conclusion will have a plot twist that will shock you! BWAHAHAHAHA! :P
