Hero Factory Brain Attack Review #14: Aquagon
From the deep darkness of the long forgotten sea comes the Aquagon! This marine beastie, set #44013, is one of the smaller sets, with only 41 pieces.
About this creation
So, let's see what we have here:

A thin shouldered torso piece, as expected.
We have two black single pin hole lower limb piece, and two grey regular upper limb pieces.
We have two single socket pieces in black,
This set comes with two black hands and two black Piraka feet
We have the dark translucent blue skull piece... gotta love that colour :P
This is interesting... We have 5 lower limb pieces in the second shortest height. The interesting thing is that they are in bright yellow... Nice pieces, it's a shame that we get an odd number of them.

This is truly a pathetic collection of armour pieces, if I speak freely;
We have a gunmetal grey regular torso armour piece, along with two size 4 armour pieces in the same colour. We have Aquagon's face, of course, and this is the only redeeming thing in the armour section; two size 3 armour pieces in translucent dark blue... again, love that colour. It's a shame we get such a small amount of armour... I hope the bareness is pulled off well.

Other pieces include two dark blue Brain Attack/Chima ultrabuild swords, a dark blue brain parasite, a hero Core, two large yellow tooth pieces and three smaller ones, and a bunch of other technic pieces.

Let's hope the small amount of pieces add up to something good.

Well, there it is all assembled. Not quite what I was expecting, which is good. This was obviously thrown together as a final set, obviously. It doesn't seem the designers were thinking about this one all too much. They were lucky though, because the whole thing together kinda looks cool... If you ignore all the lazy bits...

Firstly, the Gunmetal grey was a mistake in my eyes. The colour scheme is Yellow, Black, Blue. The Gunmetal grey not only deviates from that, but it also ruins an organic feel with metallic colours. It's not like they don't have those colours in black, either. I just don't like it.

The legs. I normally feel unconfortable about two lower limb pieces connected together on a semi-humanoid character, but that's just me, and my purist whimpy ways... It does work, and it adds more poseability... allows him to have a nice spider-like poise. It's just my eye seems not to like it... oh well.

These tenticles coming from his feet... seem a little scrappy. Maybe adding two on each foot would make it look better...

Going back to my point about the legs, they would seem a heck of a lot less random if the arms followed the same structure, so that it could do the spider-thing with both arms and legs... Also, black upper limb pieces would have looked better. I like the spikes coming off the shoulders. Simple, but achieves a skeletal look, which actually suits Aquagon well, especially with the face as well.

The hands seem wierd, too. They look a little too humanoid, with the five fingers, although I know there is nothing the designers could have done about that... unless adding Ben 10 hands and finding a way to attach the blades to the wrists. That might have worked. And another thing, the hands being a different colour to the forearms makes it look like he's wearing gloves... which is not the look for Aquagon.

The face is quite cool, though. It looks quite frightening and agressive, and the fins on the side make it look quite aquatic... It *WOULD* be good for MOCmaking, (emphasis on *WOULD*) but it's not. This is the reason why:

For the mask to be compatable with the Brain Parasite, it has to be completely flat, without folding over to the top or the sides. This means that if you add it to any standard skull piece, it looks wierd, as you can see above. There are a few solutions, for you MOCcists out there: You could build a custom skull, with covering for the back and sides of the head. You could also add it to the torso, or chest, and make a character with no neck; It's possible. Or you could just use it as amour. I'm sure there are a lot more solutions; it's up to you. But for the set, the mask's pretty cool!

Now, we've gone over all the little flaws, I would point out that as an assembled model, it looks pretty cool. The message of the character is clearly portrayed, and you can make some sweet poses with him. The swords are nice pieces, and look nice with Aquagon.

There is this alternate mode for Aquagon holding the swords. I see where they were going when doing this, but the hands are a little too close together, and the limited poseability of the arms makes posing the thing slightly tricker. I found that if you put the third fin piece (the one on his back) to lengthen the chain, the whole thing looks better. But I'd personally rather keep them as two swords.

Speaking of the fin pieces, this piece has been used to connect the tail of the Brain Parasite. I see where they were going with that, but it doesn't really work that well. It does look a bit odd, as you can see from the photo above, and it actually makes it harder to connect the tail than a straight connector piece. Also, the arguement for the Gunmetal grey pieces is valid for the bright silver pieces, too.

Sorry, my review feels sloppy this time. I'm not really with it today, but I needed to get this review up. I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
Here are Aquagon's results;

Toy Value: 3/5 (The poseability is good, and it's okay-ish as a toy.)

Design Value: 1/5 (Sorry people, but the set's design isn't that good.)

Moccist Value: 3/5 (Considering that It's such a small set, we get quite a few nice pieces.)

Overall Value: 7/15

Well, that's all folks!

Quoting Zach Lucia Great review as always! The use of the gun-metal grey was a bad idea though. It completely ruins the organinc theme. But the mask! I can think of a billion uses for that!
Yeah, They should've just left the gunmetal in my opinion. The mask is cool, I do agree.

Quoting Garrett A. Nice one Werty! I'd say more, but my iPad is at 6% battery, and I'm honestly feeling too sickly to get up and charge it- which is a sad commentary, considering there is a plug-in about 2 meters away :L
Okay then :P
