M.O. round 3: David the Fire Ninja Jedi vs. Blake Baer
About this creation
For the 2013 MocOlympics

Opponent: Blake Baer (the previous link goes to his entry, his homepage is here)

Category: Gritty Reboot.
Take a lighthearted piece of media from your childhood, and imagine what it'd look like if Hollywood turned it into a dark and gritty film.

I chose Charlie Brown! More specifically, I chose the episode about the Great Pumpkin. Seeing as it is Halloween in a few weeks (I don't celebrate it btw) I thought it would be fitting :D

This is an animated film, thus allowing snoopy to fly his house.

Since the final result has to be a film, I created four scenes that go along with the film.

The accompanying text is above each picture. All of these MOCs are 100% purist.

Here are the speaking characters! (snoopy and another non-peanuts character are not in the following photo because they don't say anything)
From left to right:
Pig Pen, Franklin, Sally, Little Red-Haired Girl, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, and Schroeder.

The following paragraph is critical for understanding and following the storyline:

One-hundred years ago (1913) a ferocious monster called "The Great Pumpkin" supposedly rose out of a pumpkin patch on Halloween night and wreaked havoc in Hennepin County, Minneapolis. Legend tells that this has always happened on the 13th year of every century for the past 700 years. Hardly anyone in Hennepin County believes (or even knows about) the myth. That is....except for Linus. He believes that everyone should take cover as this is the year 2013 and Halloween is tonight! He hasn't been able to convince anyone of his belief in The Great Pumpkin.
Linus is sure he can convince his friends if they see the signs:
1. A wizard comes and dwells in an abandoned house.
2. Someone is kidnapped by black-cloaked human-like creatures.

What will happen?

Linus: I'm telling you guys, this is the first sign! A wizard lives here, I'm sure of it!
Charlie Brown: Good grief! Nobody believes in that stuff anymore!

Lucy: Out of my way, I'll show you that there is no wizard here. It has looked like this for years, and no wizard lives here!

---They walk up to the door---

Linus: No guys! A wizard lives here I tell you, a wizard! The wizard is the one who will awaken The Great Pumpkin on Halloween night!
Lucy: Don't listen to my brother, I'll prove to you that no one lives here! Not even a wizard.

Linus: If that's the way you want it. I'm not sticking around to become the next experiment!

Sally: Experiment?! Um...I'll go with Linus. (hearts hearts)

---Everyone stood back as Lucy opened the door---

Lucy: See? Nothing to whine about!
Charlie Brown: I guess, I guess you're right Lucy!

Lucy: When am I wrong?

Charlie Brown: AAHHH!
Others: Hahahaha! You got scared by a little o'l mouse! Hahahaha!

Little Red-Haired Girl: There is nothing upstairs. Besides, there is a giant spider web blocking anyone from going to the top, there can't be anyone living here.
Others: Alright, let's go to the party, time is already wasting, and it is almost too dark to see.

Lucy: See Charlie Brown? Linus has no idea what he's talking about. Stick with me and you'll be on the right track.
Charlie Brown: Yeah, I guess you're right. Thanks Lucy! Though, I get the feeling that we are being watched...that's all.

Pig Pen: Did you see how Charlie Brown jumped? That was the best! I wish I had my phone on me so I could have taken a picture of it!
Franklin: Haha! Yeah! That WAS the best!

Pig Pen: Check out these statures! If Linus were here he'd say "get out quick! Or these things will come alive and kidnap us!
Others: Hahahaha! Alright, let's go to the party!

---And they left. But they didn't notice that smoke started to come out of the chimney....---

---After about a half an hour or so, a wizard came around to the statues, said a weird spell thing, and made the statues come alive! He sent them away to do their work!---

---Cue creepy noises---

---Then the Black-cloaked human-like creatures vanished!---

---Linus went back to the house just as the wizard started saying the spells and watched the whole thing take place.---
Linus: Oh no! I must warn Charlie Brown and the rest of my friends! But I can't get to the party fast enough....I know! Snoopy!

---Linus proceeded to tell snoopy to hurry to the party and warn Charlie Brown of the possible danger.

Snoopy immediately got onto his house and flew into the air....but he was met by none other than the RED BARON (whom you never saw in the comics or videos, so Hollywood decided not to show the Red Baron either)!

Snoopy was shot down.....he managed to land safely, but he wouldn't be able to reach the party anytime soon.---

---Cue sad and scary music---

---What will happen to those at the party?---

---Cue happy music---
Little Red-Haired Girl: So, how's things going?
Charlie Brown: For once, things are actually looking good for me. I'm glad to have met you. (smiles, and the inevitable Hollywood romantic stuff.... )

Lucy: Can you play any rock stuff?
Schroeder: ROCK?! You can't appreciate the classics with rock! Do you know anything about Beethoven or Michelangelo?
Lucy: Were they ever on bubble gum cards?
Schroeder:What?
Lucy: Bubble gum cards. You're not famous unless you get a picture on a bubble gum card. Has Beethoven or Michelangelo ever been on a bubble gum card?
Schroeder: *Facepalm*

---CRASH!

AHHH! HELP ME!

Black-cloaked human-like creatures smashed into the party via a window and snatched up ______(the unnamed person as to allow for future movies) and put him in an old bag.

Charlie Brown: It'ssss....th...the.....bbb....lack-cloa...cloaked ccreeatures!

---The poor victim tried to escape, but the creatures were too strong---

---Lucy tried to help....but she looked too long at the creature's face and became paralyzed---

All: Oh no! It's the second sign! They kidnapped ______!

---After a minute or two, Lucy snapped out of it and quickly said---
Lucy: "Where's Linus?! He was never at the party....he must be....at THE PUMPKIN PATCH! Quick! We must go get him!"

---They were too late....The wizard had just left after uttering another spell....the ground shook, and out of the pumpkin patch arose.........

THE GREAT PUMPKIN!

---Cue extremely scary noises and sounds---

---SMASH!---

---SMASH!---

Is this the end?!

And that concludes the story......for now ;D

Now I will show you other shots of my builds and some functions that you might not have seen/noticed during the story.

I love how the curved path turned out! They are all connected!

Nice.......not.

I like how the chimney turned out here!

Thorn-bushes and the side of the house.

Vines :D

The wizard and the front of the house that shows the pillars. I took off the "statue" on top of the little landing there so you can see behind it a bit better.

The top of the roof. You'll notice that there is a skeleton head behind each of those windows.

The top floor of the house! Spiders have greater respect from me now - it's a pain trying to make a web....You'll also notice a light brick :D

The other side. A chest of bones, little trinkets, bone scrolls, and scattered paper.

This spider is living it up down here! Check out the gold stuff behind it (too bad Charlie Brown and the gang didn't notice it ;)

The other side of the downstairs. We have the fireplace, a fire tool, some barrels, a mouse, and another light brick :D

Back to the top. The chandelier and the skeleton heads.

For those purist fans, YES! The paper IS real LEGO! They are from set 3403 here.

Now for the coolest functions!

You can open and close it against the starry backdrop!

Ta-da!

When you close the house all the way, the light bricks turn on because the buttons of the light bricks are hanging over the side of the set allowing for the lights to come one when the house is "closed." (the chandelier is on string so it just gets pushed further into the house)

During the story, after Charlie Brown left the house, the lights were on but they were just very hard to see because of the lighting. If you look back though, you'll be able to tell that they were indeed on and working :D

Now for the place where snoopy gets shot down out of the sky.

The dead grass took forever to stand up....if you knock one over, a bunch fall over, and then you can't fix one without knocking another one over and....yeah....I'm glad I got them to stand up for the pictures.

Some cool rocks, dead grass, and healthy grass :D

This tree is just so cool.

Some fallen leaves, some mushrooms, and some more rocks.

This tree technique is quite cool! I need to get more of those flex tubes (and more leaves for that matter....)

Another shot of the dead tree.

Here is a full shot of the party room with the backdrop (yes, I had to use the same backdrop for each of the MOCs because I ran out of black plates, tiles, and bricks...

The broken window - I don't like bending capes to make curtains.....it looks cool though.

NEVER throw away the things that the LEGO flowers are connected to - they make for great cookies/cupcakes/fill in the blank :D

I think that this painting is cool!

I like how the books in this bookcase aren't all perfectly aligned with each other.

I had to do something cool with the floor (especially since I knew that I wouldn't have enough pieces....) so I decided to go original and do an awesome fall rug with a moon, a tree, and some leaves. I think it turned out great! (you'll also notice the bucket that is full of water and apples that was from the main film, along with the random Halloween decorations hanging from the ceiling)

Who can forget Schroeder's piano?

Lastly, the pumpkin patch with the breaking ground, overgrown foliage, and an old fence.

I think this new fence technique rocks! The boards actually fit into the slots and thus making it much more realistic! It's also quite easy to make the boards have the broken look.

See the pumpkins in there? I wish I had more Asoka LEGO heads...

The scarecrow is pretty sweet! Here you can see the right side of the ground breaking up where the monster's legs will eventually break free.

Neat little vine there.

Now for The Great Pumpkin! (Note: it's not supposed to look like any particular thing - though some similarities to a pumpin - just a monster. In the Charlie Brown episode, Linus thought that Snoopy was The Great Pumpkin. So I took my liberty into creating The Great Pumpkin.)

Here is how I made him tilt slightly towards the ground and also be able to move slightly from side to side.

Brick separators for the win!

The arm.

Totally awesome and evil-looking.

The head can turn, and the arms are fully flexible.

BEWARE OF THE GREAT PUMPKIN!

Thanks for looking, God bless!

David the

Fire Ninja Jedi

David, This is an awesome build and the work you put into this round shows. I'm sorry you didn't advance, but that's just the opinion of a few people (and the way contests go). Hold your head high knowing that this work is appreciated. Then, come back better than ever and blow us away with what you'll do next. Can't wait to see more from you. ~Dave

I think you were VERY unlucky not to advance this round. You pushed the boat out, adding tons of details and functions throughout and sold a story well. Blake's build was excellent but it must have been tiny margins that decided this for the judges - I wouldn't have liked to decide! Tough luck but be proud of this one.

This is an awesome MOC and definitely one of the best overall builds of this round; up against Blake you needed to bring your A+ game and you really have. Judging by Blake's comments in the R3 thread you may yet get a second life in this contest - if so you deserve it!

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= Wow! Now that is something else! Stellar work my friend.
Thank you! Yeah, I really pushed hard on this round - I used all of my leaves (I borrowed 5 from my brother) and all but 6 or 7 grass stems (thank you pick-a-brick!). A bunch of other pieces in certain colors in the normal brick and plate element types were (mostly) all used up - like tan, dark tan, black, dark green, and sand green. I mark this as a stepping stone :D .....now where is the nearest LEGO store.... XD

Man, this was SO close. Incredible work here, and while in my opinion both your builds are equally matched, we have come to expect that from Blake. You, on the other hand, have only just been making a name for yourself, but... what a name it's becoming! You gave everything you had and more into this contest, and it showed. I am impressed beyond words at the scope, depth, and skill portrayed in this entry. All I can say is keep it up, and fantastic job once again.

This was tricky. I enjoyed your story and builds, the interior of the haunted house was especially good. Replete with excellent techniques, all the scenes are high quality. However, I'm not sold on the pumpkin monster design. I can appreciate that it's not meant to be an exact replica of a pumpkin, but a little more orange would have helped make this less cluttered looking. Ultimately, Blake gets my vote for his somewhat more unified build. Great work in the games, you really brought your A game and I look forward to seeing what you can do next year.

Let me get something straight first, I love this build, and the skill and work that went into it is self-evident. However, Blake got my vote, and here's why. For me Charlie Brown is almost impossible to reboot in a gritty form. It's one of those shows which although presenting itself to children is shot through with a sardonic, often critical or pessimistic adult voice. What do you do with something like this to make it gritty? Perhaps the only way you could do it would be something like a show called 'Whatever Happened to Charlie Brown' where we meet the cast replete with real adult problems - maybe you could just drop a Woody Allen script in there and be done with it. What you've presented I would argue is a Peanuts Scooby Doo mash-up. I'm not saying that isn't cool, didn't entertain me or make me laugh, but except for some cartoon scares I can't call it a gritty reboot.

I love the autumn rug and the fence. I love Blake's moc, but I would say that the completeness here puts it over the top IMO. The extrapolation of the original lighthearted fare to this grim piece is wonderful. Best of luck on a brilliant entry! This round will be a tough call.
