Category: Gritty Reboot.
"Take a lighthearted piece of media from your childhood, and imagine what it'd look like if Hollywood turned it into a dark and gritty film."
Another entry for the MOCOlympics here. This category required me to take something from my childhood and set it in a dark and hollywoodish setting. Therefore, I chose Magic School Bus, and chose to set it in a Zombie Apocalypse setting. Magic School Bus was one of my favorite shows when I was growing up, and it seemed like the perfect choice for this round. For those of you who don't know what Magic School Bus is, it is a show where the elementary students and their teacher, Mrs. Frizzle, go on field trips which generally feature the bus polymorphing into something (spaceship, salmon, molecule, basketball, etc.). The show has a highly educational aspect. For example, the bus once morphed into a molecule which then went through the human body's digestive tract.
And because Hollywood loves their zombies, it seemed pretty sweet to have the bus morph into a tank and then shoot some zombies. I have been wanting to do a ApocaMOC for a long time, so this really whetted my appetite.
I unfortunately do not have much time to delve further. Hopefully you judges can get an idea of the concept. I have been super busy with school, soccer, piano, other LEGO projects, and general life, but I am glad to have this done.
While I don't know the original source material (we don't even have yellow school buses in the UK so I suspect that might explain why I have never seen it!) I love the idea of it and the excellent construction. Said it before many times, accurate builds of destruction and deterioration are very difficult to get looking authentic but you show a lot of techniques here and nail the look. Congratulations on advancing.
Interesting post apocalypse scene. Very good quality on the landscape and buildings. The school house looks great, and the shredded flag is well done. Those aren't skeletons of school chidren are they? That would really capture rhe disturbing horror of warfare and nuclear disaster.
I like this, though it feels dated to me. Like Legohaulic's MOCs from 2007 or so. That said, it's still very good. I like the flag designs, and the swing set's a great touch. The magic tank bus could be more detailed, though you might have been going for a juxtaposition between simplistic childhood and gritty, detailed reality. Still, my personal preference would be to see a slightly more complex tank.
All the same, you really nailed the composition on this, and get my vote. Best of luck in the next round!
This is a tough one. It comes to two things, build quality and whether this is a gritty reboot or not. The build quality as per usual for your work is top notch. The use of the blood overspill is a lovely compositional touch. You also nailed the idea of taking something which is absolutely innocent and giving it an adult Hollywood spin. You get my vote.
Witty idea, Blake, I very much like the desolate look in contrast to the clean yellow tank. Nevertheless, your opponent David managed to impress me more in this round, so he got my vote. Good luck with the other judges.
Woah! So awesome! I love the broken down and crumbling feel throughout the whole thing! I particularity like the swings, the road on an angle, and the rough ground texture. Great use of the slightly damaged pieces on the torn-up flag! I love the magic school bus :D
Wow Blake, this is just amazing. So many fantastic details to note! You are officially amazing with flags! I love the angles you achieved, from the road to the roof on the broken down building. The idea is also wonderful, as the Magic School Bus was one of my favorite shows when I was younger, and they are still fun to watch. The realistic look of the flag, and poles help a ton. You have some stiff competition, as DFNJ entry was also well done, and I wish you 2 the best of luck!
Awesome job! This looks like a pristine school in Detroit! I love the flag it's perfect. The destroyed school looks fantastic love the bullet holes. I love that you took the difficult route and went diagonal withe the school and the street ! Excellent entry
I like the yellow tank. To me it has a squashed up, cartoon style look which seems appropriate for this theme. The shredded flag is a super bit of clever building. I also like how you've built the whole thing on a diagonal to add to the interest.
A challenge for you---can you show us what this scene looked like before the "bomb" dropped? It would be interesting to see the bus and school in pristine condition! JUST AN IDEA! Ever helpful Nick! Have you seen my "100 SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF JESUS", yet?
My being a pacifist and against violence put aside, this is well done and serves a purpose - to show us once again the results of that violence I am so against! In that respect I must give you a 5 heads-excellent! Now add to the mix I am a retired NYC Public School teacher it was sad to see a school be the subject of your demolition! I guess you took the song: "SCHOOL'S OUT FOREVER" to heart! by the way - loved the swings!
"On the MAGIC SCHOOL TANK!" Haha, incredible work, as usual, Blake. I love the flag, the ruined building, and everything else. The atmosphere is perfect, giving off the sensational "Gritty Reboot" feel. The tank is perfect. Well shaped, smoothed, and the all yellow colorscheme takes the cake. "According to my research, this is not a good spot we're in!" :)
Just perfect! The building is fantastically destroyed with all the small little details like the rebar and crumbled concrete. The tank is awesome and VERY yellow. But, it's that tattered flag steals the show. Excellent job! Today's lesson plan: Double tap to the back of a zombie head. ;)
