MO-R3: Legopard vs Matt rowntRee
About this creation
Back to the Future Racer!

Against the great Matt rowntRee

The sense of the MocOlympics is always to get the builders out of their comfort zone. And with this category:
Back to the Futuron!: Even if you weren't around during the 80's, everyone has heard of the time traveling adventures of Marty McFly! Build a "SET" from Back to the Future that you think should be released. (Futuron style not required, it was a play on words.)
... you, the judges, definitely got me out of this (i thing very large) zone.
Always i display one of my MOCs there is someone who says: "Hey, Jonas. You should become a LEGO-Designer. Your MOCs are so nice!"
But my answer is that my stile is way different from that of the official designers.
I like to use any puristic technique i can found. No matter it's more or less sturdy. Lego models always have to be build with leagal techniques and sturdy enough a child can play with the set and maybe throw it around.
Furthermore my attention is always on details and more details. That's connected with the sturdiness of my MOCs. But at sets it's converse. It has to be sturdy. And maybe some sturdy details.
To regret of the FOLs in sets are rarely rare parts. And especially not in great numbers. In addition the unseen 1x1 plates are gold, black or red studs and the mainconstruction is made of bricks in lime, blue or green.
On the side of the FOL the only limit is your collection. If you have 100000 1x1 plates in bley you can use them.

You see that this category brought much challenges. But take a look if i could manage them.

I got the new Back to the future "Set" and would like to share the pictures and some impressions with you.

Name: Back to the Future Racer!
Set-Number: 21107
Pieces: 1046
Release date: 21.10.2015

After opening the box there where two bags with parts, the big bley plate and the cool pullback motor:

The first bag with the parts for the building and the street lamps.

In the second one are the parts for the deLorean Racer.

These are the extra parts. Nice to see we get one more 1x1 plate in bley. And of course a orange Brick-Separator.

First take a look at the deLorean Racer.

Looks a bit different from the one in the already released Set 21103. While the other one is made for the figs, this one is a bit bigger and has a pullback motor plus a mechanism.

From the back:

And the "greebles". The mechanism causes that the uran-reactor will shoot away if you hit a wall with the front of the deLorean.

Don't believe?

The gap between the front ant the middle section is not so beautiful, but necessary.

Open-able Doors.

Here you can see the mechanism:

And me trying out the pullback motor. (I'm 1.21 Gigawatts :) )
While the other set is definitely more (or less) detailed and for the adults, the focus of this one is on the playability and sturdiness, especially for kids.

Let's take a look the building from bag two.

It's more schematic than realistic.

But with the given antenna and wires you can recreate the scene from the first BttF-movie.

And Whooop. Back to the Future!

After building the set i tested the sturdiness of the deLorean.
Test 1 Test 2
(I'm very sorry for the bad video quality, but i don't have the equipment here to make better videos.)

Back to the Future Racer!

I hope you like this kind of presentation.
If i wouldn't travel tomorrow to Greece, i would have build a bit more.
For the case i would win this round and go on to R4, i would be back early enough to compete. But that have to decide the judges.

Good Luck to my opponent and all contestants!
Stay crætive!

Your simplistic "SET" approach almost won me over, but when all is said and done, my vote still goes to Matt. Very good effort though Jonas, very good indeed!
