The Great Western Lego Show
Classic Race Teams goes public!
About this creation

Held every year on the first weekend of October, The Great Western Lego Show at the STEAM museum in Swindon, UK, had everything a Lego fan could want, except maybe cars...

Myself and my good friend Joe, aka MortalSwordsman, decided to fix that this year.

It was our first major show and what a blast!

Other cars were there - below is the work of Ralph Savelsberg, aka Mad Physicist on Flickr... a great bloke who did much to encourage us to exhibit.

The Classic Race Teams table. Both Joe and I brought along some other stuff too.

Joe had a transformers model, which he spent much of the weekend transforming...

Demonstrating the Mini's engine was a lot easier for me - just flick a switch! Many thanks to my neighbour, Vaughan Medway, for donating some batteries when I ran out...

And now for a lot of stuff not built by me:

The GWLS is in a train museum, so... the yellow one's a tamping car, by the way, and incredibly detailed.

This Rolls Royce jet engine contains 150,000 pieces and was built by Bright Bricks, a professional company that seems like a UK version of Sean Kenney's set-up. The only thing at the show that was glued; and yes, it does turn.

This brings it all back! A hobby set from 1977, 6x life size and gorgeous.

Those brick built wheels that replicate the tread of the tyres are brilliant!

Another supersize set with more good stuff taking shape behind it.

Many styles of Architecture to be found, but this was my favourite...

Not everything was huge...

A special treat for any Davids who might be watching... David Roberts turned up on Saturday and we had a lovely long chat about all things Lego.

Futuron rules!

The centre of the main hall was given to this enormous and impressive castle set-up, which was being frantically assembled on Friday night. Plonking some cars on the table is a lot easier!

This Mindstorms powered, entirely Lego and unglued Segway works properly and a grown man can ride it!

The same builder also did this, which he allowed kids to drive around the hall when it got a bit quieter in the afternoon.

More Technic genius, this time wheel shaped. Extremely strong and rigid.

Goldilocks!

Everyone's favourite table - sets of all eras in Blacktron colours. Ace!

Many,many trains...

Any engineer will tell you that a bridge should just stand up, and this survived the weekend....

6,000 pieces each and completely awesome...

... but not unbeatable, apparently.

My favourite thing at the show was also the smallest..

This mosaic took shape over the course of the weekend as kids queued to assemble one 32x32 baseplate at a time. It was done at around 4:00pm Sunday. Nice timing! 8,000 people visited and I hope they all enjoyed it. I know I did.

I'll be back next year for sure.

Quoting sam the first do you know if there's going to be any other lego shows , nearer the south of the UK?
This is the biggest in the South. There's also one in Brighton, that's a model show (not just Lego) but that's smaller.

Quoting Phil Harvey Your Mini was amazing! My 8 year old son was impressed and inspired (so was I!!). My friend who came along was fairly nonchalont about many displays... Until he saw your Mini working!! (I think he was over-awed seeing it to be honest!!). Thanks for displaying and allowing destructive kids (and adults) to 'play' with your display. Hope to see you next year! Brick on!
Thanks a lot Phil, glad you guys had fun. See you next year!

Quoting Tom Simon How many autographs were demanded of you? (I heartily endorse your architecture pick!)
Thanks Tom. Not many (alright, none...) but there's loads of kids who have a pic of themselves posing next to the Mini. It's all about the models, and lovely Art Deco architecture :-)

I just commented on Joe's entry, and I will say the same here: when there is some "real life reference" added to the pics, the builds become really epic! I also like the pics from the other builds you added, they also are very impressive and a joy to see.

Quoting MortalSwordsman . How on earth did you get the time to take these brilliant photos Nick? I had a great time with a good friend and am really looking forward to doing it again, however I think I will need a year to recover - still exhausted! My photos were very poor so it is great to have yours as a permanent reminder.
Thanks Joe. I took most of these on Saturday morning before we opened; unfortunately I didn't get a good one of Vaughan's traction engine, which I really liked. Still knackered!

Quoting Starscream Soundwave This makes me even sadder that I missed it, hopefully next year I'll be able to make it. Lots of fantastic creations by the look of things, I loved that mini train scene and the big remake of an old set. I recognised Ralph's stuff too. Yours and Joe's display also looked fantastic, with the CRT's in the middle and Joe's figures and your huge cars either side. All in all, it definitely looks like I missed out! Hope you had a good time.
Thanks SS. Hope you make it next year, it's well worth it!
