Hero Factory Brain Attack Review #13: Evo
When the sea becomes infested with evil, in comes Evo! This brave young Hero, set #44012, is one of the smaller sets of the summer, with a total of 51 pieces!
About this creation
Let us take a look at the parts:

As usual, we have our bog-standard narrow torso piece.
This is accompanied by four grey standard upper limb pieces.
The set includes four black lower limb pieces; two in the second shortest height, and two with a single pinhole in them.
The set has two yellow hands, and two gunmetal grey feet.
We get a translucent dark green skull, in the Brain Attack mold, of course.

We have the Brain Attack chest plate in gunmetal grey in this set.
Evo has two size 4 armour pieces in gunmetal grey, and one of the exact same mold, but in transparent light blue.
This set has three yellow size 3 armour pieces.
We have a single "Breakout" shoulder cup piece in gunmetal grey.
The set comes with Evo's head piece, along with a plain transparent vizor piece in light blue.

The set comes with two "Ordeal of Fire" blade pieces in the regular colour, along with a Hero Core, three "Ordeal of Fire" spike pieces; two in yellow, one in orange, a sword handle piece, four yellow Exo-Force robot arms and an assortment of technic pieces, which are all very regular.

Hrrm... I liking this one more than I thought I would. The first thing I notice, is that whilst this set has less pieces than some of the others, and the hight is smaller than Stormer and Surge, the other Heroes of the series, this guy doesn't feel as "small" as he technically is. His large weapon still makes him something to worry about in the battlefield, visually. I'm impressed, considering this is only a 51 piece set.

I like how in this new version of Evo, there are still hints of the old Breakout Evo in this set. The legs, for example, forgetting the sizes of the armour, are the same structually as the old ones. (yellow thighs, gunmetal grey "boots") Even the colour of the bones were the same (The ones on the left is not entirely accurate, but the original set had grey upper limb pieces) That's nice; the Breakout Evo was really good for a small set, and it's good that the designers payed homage to that.

On the same note, the shoulder piece is the only thing left of Evo's "Tank Arm". I noticed that almost every Brain Attack Hero of this height had some massive shoulder armour as their right armour. Conforming to that, with the remaniss of the last version is cool!

I didn't think I would like the idea of dark Green on yellow on a pale bright blue. The colours are very bright, and almost childish in a way, (very much like a bathtub toy, which obviously suits Evo's new underwater theme) But I quite like it. I still feel that it's childish, but I think this time it actually works, but only for this once. (Possibly an example of Chaos Mathmatics, or my very undecided taste) I guess it's that the gunmetal grey balances out the feel of the colours.

Without the vizor, the green stands out a lot, and looks quite nice with the bright yellow. Having a chance to see it up close, I can definately see the underwater-ness of the whole thing, which I couldn't see before. The holes in his cheeks get me though. The green in the cheeks takes away the whole idea that he has green eyes, and it just looks a bit... I dunno, makes the contrast work a little less. The whole thing also doesn't look very humanoid, especially the lack of two eyeholes, plus the holes in his cheeks, which are so close together. A very cool helmet, but maybe not the one for Evo.

The weapon is quite nice. The mechanism is simple, but It kinda works, and gives off a very different feel in each positioning of the blades. My only complaint about the weapon in general is that it's difficult to pose Evo's hands with it, without his hands bending unconfortably, in terms of the character, not the toy. But when you can get that right pose, it looks awesome!

One thing though: What's this orange spike supposed to represent? Is it some sort of lazer fire? It's not really clear. But if it IS some kind of lazer, then maybe a translucent colour would have made it more recogniseable as some sort of light energy. Also, wouldn't a blue-ish colour make more sense not only to the astethics of the toy, but to the general under water theme also?

For those who struggle with the two-handed thing on the staff, you are given an alternative; to split the staff as shown above. It's much easier to pose, and gives Evo much more freedom in manouverability. It does kinda leave the hilt behind though, although you could always use that as a knife or something.

They also give you the option to store the weapon on his back, too! I'm so glad they did this. They tried it with the shields in the wave one sets, but this really works, and it's great for play! That is, if your okay with the blade sticking miles above his head. But hey, it's a good start!

Again, the problem, is that the hilt gets left behind. Kinda a shame this piece got neglected.

However, this can always be solved with a little thinking outside the box!

Not what I was expecting. I'm glad, because in honesty, my expectations were low. I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
Here are Evo's results;

Toy Value: 4/5 (The spear is the main reason, including the storage of it.)

Design Value: 4/5 (The colours, man, the colours!)

Moccist Value: 1/5 (We get very little, and nothing very special.)

Overall Value: 9/15

Well, that's all folks!

Quoting Stormjay Rider Well, if it's 1/5 value for MOCing, I probably won't get it. I've been considering Dragon Bolt, and think he's actually pretty good partswise. The Technic bar/balljoint and friction ball joint are parts I need to stock up on, and I want to use the lightning parts on my selfMOC, Jethryn. (Have you seen him?)
Not really the best one for parts in my view. Dragon Bolt would be a better investment in that aspect. I have not seen your self MOC yet, I'll be sure to check him out later! ;)

Quoting Legobob 29 I am happy! And I also agree with you on everything :) Personally, I think the helmet is pretty ugly, but I can live with it with the visor down! Another great review bro, what's next? ;)
