MO round 2: Stuart Lucas vs. Master Shifu Leo J
Deep in the Depths: Hollywood has speculated about the ocean's depths for years, but what do you personally think dwells beneath the surface of the earth? Be imaginative and show us what kind of fantastical idea you can come up with!
About this creation
This is an entry in the 2013 MOC Olympics. Here is the link to my esteemed opponent's fine entry . If MOCpages has elder statesman, he's one of them!

In the deepest parts of the sea, the extreme pressure and cold means that no conventional life can survive. However, scientists have been amazed to discover strange creatures such as giant tubeworms thriving in the warmer waters around volcanic vents.

There's that volcanic vent in action...

No human could survive at this depth, so investigations are carried out using ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). Incidentally, behind the tubeworm clump you can just see the switch for the lightbrick. The piece of rock with the grille piece folds down to keep the light on.

Of course, the real denizens of the deep are far too intelligent to be discovered by ROVs. The Bathyrians have been down here for centuries!

A number of interesting objects have fallen into the depths from the surface. The Bathyrians take their time to decide which ones are of use or value...

...those which meet the pleasure of the Bathyrian king are added to his treasure trove.
The Bathyrians live in harmony with their fellow deep sea dwellers, such as the giant gulper eel, which is considered an adorable pet - in spite of its unfortunate habit of swallowing inattentive owners.

In spite of their aquatic nature, the Bathyrians have developed rudimentary cooking techniques using hot stones from the volcanic vent.

There's always one giant tubeworm in the clump that grows a different colour fluke from the rest, and gets teased mercilessly.

Too bad the ROV went down the wrong side of that ridge...

One final shot of the ROV... and thanks for watching!

Fun build stu, but clever too on a number of levels. The ROV is well shaped, the irregular base works really well (I'm into those at the mo!)and the lava flow adds a light function into the mix, while the reveal of the backside shows a whole second focus with humour and that great eel! Well done on advancing mate.

Congrats Stuart! When I originally viewed this, I only smiled and didn't leave a comment at that time because Ian and Chris had already judged you. I wanted to wait until after Annie judged since it was a close one! As always, you delivered a whimsical take. I like the use of the figs, the small submersible, and pampered 'pet'! Good luck in round 3! :)

Quoting Master Shifu Leo J Congrats Stuart! Good luck in the coming rounds!
Thanks Shifu, you're a great opponent. I think I'll need the luck if I'm going to progress any further too!

This was an incredibly tough match up to judge. But I think you out built Shifu ever so slightly, o you get my vote. Congrats and welcome to round 3!

Quoting Ian Spacek I went back and forth on this one a little, but when all is said and done, you've got my vote Stuart!
Thanks Ian, and Chris... the tension continues, aargh! It's up to Annie to break the deadlock.

Like Ian I too had to go back and forth a bit. In the end though my vote went with Shifu. His creatures just tipped it in his favor ever so slighty. Could still go either way! Good luck! ~ Chris.

Don't tease the tubeworm! If I had a nickel for every time I said that... XD Love all the details here along with the backstory. I knew they were down there. Clever Bathyrians. Good job Stuart and good luck!

An intersting idea to put sensors inside the sub, instead of a pilot: I like it! The glowing lava looks great too. The whole back story is great fun and works well, as with all of your builds. I can just imagine the giant gulper eel swallowing down one of its owners!
