M.O. round 2: David the Fire Ninja Jedi vs. Zach "gothambygaslight"
About this creation
2013 MocOlympics
Category: This Means War: What if LEGO rescinded their policy against modern warfare? Build a set (or a line of sets, if you dare) for LEGO's inaugural military theme.
Opponent: Zach "gothambygaslight" L.

Notes: My price estimations are just that...estimations. I did not count the number of pieces I used to make each of the sets, I just took educated guesses.
I built these with as much LEGO-set accuracy as I could with the pieces that I have. The real LEGO sets would use other parts that I don't have, or use more parts of limited pieces that I have. This is my interpretation of the category as to how LEGO would probably make the sets. Please don't comment saying a set is not "LEGO-set-ness" because of your own interpretation or because of the parts that I had to use. Remember, the competition calls for one's own interpretation of the category. This challenge stretched my collection in several ways, but I am very pleased with the outcome of these sets. Thanks, and enjoy the build!

I decided to build three sets!

The first set: Artillery Defense $20-$30

Open and close the artillery.

There is a wide range of motion available at the firing position.

The second set: The Tank $50

One soldier can fit inside the rotating area.

Just take off this piece when removing or putting a soldier in here.

Add in the machine gun for more playability.

For those who'd like to see a close-up on the machine gun.

Cool shots:

Remove this piece....

....and then open the "hood" to view the driving controls and to add/remove a soldier.

I really like this shot.

Out in the wild....the tank is ready for anything.

The third and final set: 488 Fighter $70

The cockpit opens.

Inside the cockpit. Underneath the two red joystick thingies are two studs that allow the pilot to remain steady during flight (the bottoms of the minifigure's legs connect there).

Some other shots that include the wheels.

Outside shots! (well, all of the photos were taken outside, but here we just have the sky and some trees in view)

~FNJ's comments:
Whew! That was lots of fun! I went about building this MOC by first doing what any LEGO designer do - looked at a bunch of pictures of the real things. From there it was finding the right pieces, colors, and ways to add in the functions! Many times I wish I could have had some other pieces, but I am very pleased with the result of each of these MOCs. This round brought me to build some things that I otherwise would not have built (at least in the near future). My favorite is the tank.

Parting shot.

Thanks for looking, God bless!

Fire Ninja Jedi

Well done on advancing. All three are nice MOCs in their own right, I just wonder if (purely for me) the tank and artillery are too modern-looking to go with that prop-driven fighter as part of a range of sets, but that tiny quibble aside, good job!

Quoting A M Holy cow man, your skills have skyrocketed recently. First off, your pictures look astounding--how exactly do you achieve that white background outside? Secondly, these builds are wicked cool. The shaping and coloring for everything is spot-on, and they really look like stuff TLG would design. Fantastic details throughout all of the builds, and I mean, three sets!? Dude! I can see that you are one of those rare builders that is equally talented in both medieval and modern MOCing. I look forward to seeing what else you bring to this epic contest. Great job!!
Thanks A M! Outside was mainly for nice lighting on the sets themselves. Then I was able to clean up by whitening the background of some of the pictures using GIMP. Though the fighter wasn't whited - just minimal clean-up. I like to dabble in lots of themes it seems ;) Thanks! I'll do my best :D

Quoting Achintya Prasad Nice! Is this not your first foray into military MOCs? If so, this isn't half bad :-) Of course, I do feel that the plane's landing gear should be taller, and a few other small things, but with time and patience, you'll get the hang of it :-)
Yes indeed! Thanks! It's great to get the opinion of someone who is really into these things, I'll keep that in mind!

Not so much sets that Lego would make rather the sets I hope they would. Congratulations on going for the set. All the builds are tight and show a great use of military colour tones. Almost perfect except for those annoying plates you have to remove to fit the figs in. Still a great build which gets my vote for the solid building across all the models.

Nice work. I think the tank is the star of the show here, though the artillery's good too. Not really sold on the plane though, it seems a bit blocky and misshapen. I think you approached the design aesthetic of LEGO in the tank and artillery piece, though it's still a bit too detail heavy for one of their sets. I think LEGO would probably streamline the designs, removing superfluous pieces and making them more structurally sound. However, these are still very cool sets, and you get my vote.

Here is the only problem I see with these sets, seeing as they are supposed to be how they would look as if made by Lego. They are TOO good to be made by Lego. They look amazing. Lego would make them smaller, probably with less and more simple pieces. Lego would probably charge more than you have listed here by 5 bucks or so. But hey, these are amazing sets!

Quoting Stormjay Rider You forgot another staple of LEGO sets -- some enemies to bombard.
I purposely did not add that in there because I don't think that (in real life) if LEGO did a military theme, they wouldn't have any formal bad guys because critics (LEGO fans around the world) would find a way to attribute the two sides to certain countries. So LEGO would create a bunch of sets in differing colors to avoid any bias accusations and thus maximize the profits from the sets.

Quoting Halhi 141 As MOCs they're all fantastic, but the tank especially doesn't look like a set, due to the use of the wheels as sprockets. There also seem to be too many pieces for the size of the sets. Nice builds though.
Thanks! This is my interpretation of the category to the best of my ability with the pieces I have. LEGO would use other pieces, yes, but with the pieces I have, I can only go so far. I would have used one wheel for all of them, but I don't have that many in the size I wanted to use, so I improvised, and I still think it looks like a LEGO set.

Quoting JS Can These are nice MOCs, but I wonder if any of the judges will base their judgments on how much they look like a set made by LEGO.
Thanks! Well, this is my best interpretation of LEGO sets with the pieces that I have. It follows the category. People shouldn't have preconceptions of how they think an official LEGO set should look like and then judge based on that.
