This "red giant" is the famous VOLVO F12 Turbo Intercooler, model year '83. I built it in 1/13 scale. It happily joins my other 1/13 truck models.
About this creation
At the end of 2010, after the first failed attempt of few months before, I started building the VOLVO F12 Turbo Intercooler, the model year 83, in 1/13 scale.
Ive always liked the F12, it was revolutionary when the Swedish manufacturer launched it at the end on the seventies. Matchless style an design!
The cover photo is a personal experiment in graphic design that I made using the style of seventies LEGO box. I love "seventies look"!
The cab can be opened and beneath it is positioned the powerful in line 6 cylinders engine coupled with the gearbox. The front grille can be opened too discovering the radiator.
Above the cutaway view of the F12 with the engine unit in plain sight.
Below a back view of the red giant with the vertical exhaust pipe made of brick round 2x2.
To realize this tractor truck Ive used the magnificent 1/8 scale model released in 1987 by Pocher (historic Italian brand of static model making, failed few years ago and now bought by the english Hornby). Ive bought a very good F12 Pocher on ebay in 2010 (Ive looked for it for a long, long time!)
First of all Ive designed and built the chassis, estimating the ratio with the 1/8 model and the technical drawing (on the top right of the photo below).
Then I built the cab and all the details (fuel tank, air tanks, tool box, fifth wheel, exhaust pipe, etc ). Last but not least I realized the 6 cylinder inline engine.
I finished the work on april 2011 and I think the red giant looks very fine!
Inevitable on the roof the mirror mascots: Bibendum (MICHELIN man) and Flipje.
The red VOLVO is going up on the yellow NOOTEBOOM semi low-loaders.
