About this creation

Welcome to Oz.

"Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?"

This moc is dedicated to all my buddies at VirtuaLUG. I love you guys.

As most of you probably know, VirtuaLUG's collaborative layout for this year's Brickworld Chicago was "The Wizard of Oz", based on and inspired by the 1939 film. They blew people's minds with that unbelievable feat and took out first prize for best group layout (again!)

You can find examples of it here and here along with heaps of blogs, videos etc that can be found by just googling it.

My contribution, which I was very excited about, was Munchkinland. I designed the little houses and made some Bricklink orders, but alas, life does not always work out as planned and instead of having a fun trip to America and hanging with all my best friends in the world I decided it might be more fun to get a cancer diagnosis instead… In case you were wondering why I sort of slipped off the face of the earth for a bit this year, that’s why. Forced to stay at home and sick from all the chemo I knew I couldn't make it to Chicago and could not commit to building the scene. So Chris Phipson, the legend he is, took up my section and created his glorious and beautiful Munchkinland. Thanks Chris, you’re the man. But I knew before the year was out I just had to build it. It's what I was supposed to do this year. So with two operations and 6 months of chemo behind me I now give you my vision of Munchkinland.

I have been slowly plodding away at this for the last month and a half.

Dorothy and Glinda are of my own design, but I could not pass up the opportunity to use Hans Dendauw’s cutest little Toto in a basket design, which featured throughout the Vlug layout.

Dorothy’s house, a bit sick looking after its journey over the rainbow inside the twister.

“Let the joyous news be spread, the wicked old witch at last is dead!”

In completing the dio, it was obvious it would be too crowded if I populated it with heaps of munchkins, so I chose the moment when they are all hiding right after Dorothy arrives and Glinda beckons them to come out.

“It’s alright; you may all come out and thank her.”

“Come out come out, wherever you are. And meet the young lady who fell from a star.”

The town hall, with my favourite munchkin, the mayor.

The centre piece of the town, the flower that in the movie Dorothy and Glinda stand under.

I’d love to try keep this up for next year’s Christchurch Brick Show and maybe for Auckland too, but it’s quite large and my place is quite small and I’m bound to need some of those bricks at some point in the near future so to those who plan to attend these shows I can’t promise it will survive…

I put this frog here in honour of Dave Kaleta, it represents the superior maturity and dedication he showed in leading the unruly coyotes to victory. Sorry Dave, I’m sure you’d probably much rather be represented by a bat, but the frog just worked better for the scene you know ;)

(Oh, and please, I ask you all to comment only on the moc and not that other silly thing I mentioned, k?)

Sorry it's taken me so long to get over here, Leda - I've finally come out of my cave for a brief look at the light. ;) Anyway, nice one! Beautiful design, and for so much visual activity in such a small space, it really works wonderfully. Great color and parts usage here, too. Hope you're on the mend, and Lovely work!!!

Quoting Marc dZ Bricks are colorful but it is so difficult to create a world of fantasy made from Lego... And you did it. I'm just amazed by this so beautiful landscape and all the little stories coming from each pic. Everything inspires joyfulness, smile and peace. A pleasure to watch, thank you.

Yes I agree, what with Friday the 13th yesterday and absolutely NO horror movies on tv (seriously, not even one, on any channel!) I am feeling far too happy and cheery for my own good lately.

Haha thank you! I love colour and this moc was just begging for as much as I could give it. In all honesty though it's not actualy as colourful as it seems on first glance, it's just that the bright blue background makes what colours I have used go pow!

Quoting Blake Baer I was admiring this on flickr, and am now delighted to find it here on the pages! This is absolutely gorgeous. Mine pales in comparison to your beautiful, detailed, and realistic work. You did a brilliant job recreating one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. Atta girl!
Blake, your moc was actually a big inspiration to me. I loved it when you made it (how long ago now? 1, 2 years?) I stole *cough* borrowed the use of the broomstick beside the witch's legs, even though its not in the movie I thought it looked better with it and I was struggling immensely with how to build the town hall roof because it is a bigger building than the houses and your moc gave me the perfect part, the top of the Adventurers balloon. So from the bottom of my heart I thank you.

Leda, what can be said that already hasn't? Your attention to detail is unrivaled and your unique flair for part usage is inspiring. I found the greatest joy in looking at this is the NPU and feeling my smile grow a little more every time. Absolutely fantastic! I'm proud of you!

Wow, Millie. What a fine piece of work. The color is just astonishing. Your use of color contrast just pushes the features to jump right off of my screen. The hiding munchkins are very creative and the greenery is beautiful. My favorite part is probably all the little munchkin homes. Really pulls the whole thing together and makes the MOC as a whole instantly recognizable to anyone who doesn't live under a rock. Very well done.

Quoting Deus "Big D." Otiosus As some constructive criticism: you could have wedged a bunch of chees, graters and tiles in the gaps.
Yes, I agree, it would have looked smoother. I don't have enough yellow and red cheeses (already spent a fortune on this moc) but if I keep it built to display next year at my local show I will most likely invest in some and do just that. Thanks big D.

Quoting El Barto ! Awesome work on this, Leda! It certainly has your unique style, not to take anything away from Chris' unique flare ;) It's loaded with tons of intricate details and crafty parts usage, so thanks for loading so many close up pics of it. It must be satisfying to get this completed, just in time to get rolling on the next big project--Charge!
Thanks Barty. I had hundreds of photos to sort through, there is heaps more detail that you can't really see, it really needs to be seen in person I think. Come over and vist ;) I need to do some serious sorting next then its time to begin planning for next year.
