USS CV-10 Yorktown aircraft carrier
Here is my LEGO version of the CV-10 USS Yorktown aircraft carrier. Some 60 pounds bricks for a 1:100 scale reproduction of this "fighting lady" as she stood in january 1945 with her 93 planes (30 F6F Hellcat, 37 F4U1D Corsair, 15 SB2C Helldiver and 15 TBF Avenger).
About this creation
Under construction as Bon Homme Richard, this new Essex-class carrier was renamed Yorktown in honor of CV-5 Yorktown, sunk at the epic Battle of Midway (June 1942). Built in an amazing 16-½ months at Newport News, Virginia, Yorktown was commissioned on April 15, 1943, and participated significantly in the Pacific Offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. Yorktown received the Presidential Unit Citation, and earned eleven battle stars for service in World War II.

First, a view of the bow. Note the 1:100 scale with the little guy.

Brooklyn Navy Yard 350T hammerhead crane.

First part!

And, as usual, some gold coins in the structure:

The bridge crane is not existing anymore...

... parts were needed to build the giant hull!

Two hull sections ready to be assembled

Clic!

Horizontal vertigo

The name is already on the hull

My 6 years old daughter to give the scale.

2,70 meters long (8'10'') - the hull, not my daughter!

Nice to see that gangway doors can be opened

Helldiver parks on hangar rear elevator

Hellcat (wings folded up) waiting on hangar front elevator

Hangar inside view

Notice the repeated 10 code on the hull

Flight deck assembly

Some parts for flight deck building

Lots of tiles for realistic teck deck effect

Front deck with the 10 Yorktown identification code

F4U-1D Corsair on front elevator

Rear elevator, sadly not (yet) motorized

Helldiver on rear elevator (top position)

Mk12 quadruple mount of Bofors guns (40mm)

Preliminary study for 5-inch (127mm) twin gun mount Mk32

Essex class caracteristic aircraft carrier island

The front top island Mark 37 fire control director

Island starboard view

Island front view with some guns

Nice shot, isn't it ?

Anti-aircraft defense.

Helldiver bombers parked on the deck.

Hellcat just after docking. Flight deck crew hurries to prepare next one.

USS Yorktown aircraft carrier as she stood in january 1945.

Six F6F fighters and ten TBF torpedo bombers quite ready to take off

All squadrons are on the deck, 93 airplanes : 37 F4U-1D Corsair, 30 F6F Hellcat, 15 TBF Avenger and 15 SB2C Helldiver.

In the 1950's, USS Yorktown aircraft carrier was modified with the addition of an angled deck to better operate jet aircraft in her role as an attack carrier (CVA). In 1958, YORKTOWN was designated an anti-submarine aircraft carrier (CVS), and would later earn 5 battle stars for service off Vietnam (1965-1968). The ship also recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule (December 1968). YORKTOWN was decommissioned in 1970 and placed in reserve; and in 1975, was towed from Bayonne, NJ to Charleston to become the centerpiece of Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

My LEGO version is quietly anchored in my lego room.

Well, this is easily one of the best LEGO ship MOCs here. The sheer size and attention to the detail is amazing and it is great to see a little bit different color scheme, we are all kinda tired of dull grey ones (though I belong to the latter group) :). I love the airplanes, you took some really clever approaches, and the final result is impressing. I love the AA guns as well and the hangar with the detailed walls is just a cherry on the top. Keep up the good work!

yes i have to agree with Henrik about how under rated this build is,you can only see how much effort and planning that has gone into this by the photos of the building process, even the tiny details like the no10 on the bridge(amazingly done)and the elavator(does it work?)i always struggle with things like that,i am planning the SARATOGA for my next build and will be using a lot of your techniques(hope you dont mind) great build colours shaping, the shipyard crane is also great should be a MOC on its own, whats next :::::

I'm glad you got drawn my attention to this impressive and underrated model. It is a pleasure to follow the construction of this ship on your LEGO shipyard. The ship is brilliantly shaped and very nicely detailed. And I really like this impressive fleet of aircrafts parked on deck. Each type are easy recognizable, a tricky job, at a scale of 1:100. Any plans for another megabuild?

Fantastic work! The size, of course, is pretty awesome and all of the airplanes make me kind of jealous. The only problem with it is that it needs more recognition!

Quoting john lamarck Very good. The planes need a bigger propeller and tyres. Do you speak french ?
I also would like something better to fit the 1:100 scale (à cette échelle c'est vrai, je n'ai pas trouvé mieux ni pour les hélices, ni pour réaliser les trains d'atterrissage...)

Amazing job, one of the best aircraft carriers I've seen. The color scheme is also attractive and you've done a great on the airplanes. The AA armament is wonderfully detailed as well and the shape of the hull is perfect. Detailed hangar is just a cherry on top. Keep up the good work!
