Hero Factory Brain Attack Review #10: Dragon Bolt
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, It's DRAGONBOLT! Dragon Bolt is set #44009, with a total of 149 pieces, being the only large villain set of the Brain Attack.
About this creation
Right, lets have a look at the pieces. I'm not going to go through every single piece, because that's just too much to type. You can pretty much make out whats there anyway.

Ooh, what's in here? I remember this to be minifig cape packaging. But Dragonbolt doesn't have a minifig cape...

Seriously? all that packaging for a rubber band. Does a rubber band need packaging anyway? Seems a little dramatic.

Whoa, that's a fancy looking Brain Parasite. Maybe he's super charged with electricity? Or did the painting machine thing decide it was going to be epic that day? :P

Okay, here he is, all assembled. So, my understanding is that people hate this guy because he's dramatically smaller compared with the Dragon Bolt from the TV episode. I actually have no gripes with the size. Yeah, it is smaller than it is theoretically meant to be, but this thing is respectable in size, bearing in mind this is not a three hundred pound exclusive set with ten million pieces. This is something that can be baught for 15.00, and is designed to go against a regular Hero (I mean Surge; I'm not talking about Jet Rocka at the moment) and so yeah, it's big, but not too big.

I mean, look at that. Forget the movie version for the moment, just look. His tail is about the length of a regular Hero, and his wing-span is longer than the height of Furno XL. Say what you will, this guy is not small.

Sorry about that, I kinda turned on the fans there, but I honestly feel that saying this guy is small is unfair and wrong.

One part of this guy that is small though is the legs. Replacing the lower limb pieces with regular sized ones and adding armour to those would make the whole thing seem bigger, and the legs would look like they could hold the whole thing up.

This torso isn't so good. The back of the torso, connecting the tail and the wings, is solid and pretty impressive. The front, however, isn't that well done. There is a massive gap between the torso, exposing all that technic which is the wing mechinism. It breaks the flow from the tail to the head. Good thing is, it's easily fixed. There is a ball joint sticking out where the neck would be for the actual torso skeleton piece, and three pin holes. This is your homework; find a way to add bulk to that section and fix the gap. I want it on my desk by Friday xD

That neck design is simple and it works! It looks solid and complete. That way of connecting the Brain Parasite's tail is the best yet! Usually, when you try to connect the tail on the other guys, it keeps popping back out, and if it stays, the plastic gets damaged, and the thing just stays like that with its tail between its legs, even after you unplug it. This time, it's easy! It stays there, and it doesn't get messed up either!

The head design is cool too. Simple but effective. My favorite part though is that really smexy looking Dragon Goatee underneath his chin. DRAGON GOATEE FTW!!!!

That wing design is... okay...ish? The technique is cool, but the wings seem a bit lacking in solidity if you know what I mean. The yellow sword pieces move, I don't know if it was intentional, but it's nice to ajust them, to have a sort of "flight mode" and a "ground mode" if you know what I mean.

That mechanism is really cool. The way it's built is very impressive (Big red button as usual, I've kinda got used to these miscoloured technic pieces now XD) Two problems though; at first, it's a little hard to move, and the second problem is that it's made to have the wings up at defult. This makes the wings look tensed up a little, which kinda detracts from the look. Defult should have been down, I think, but hey.

Whoa, what's this? That, sir, is epic. I'm not usualy a big fan of glow in the dark pieces, but that is really effective. Really sinister, brings some old Bionicle fans back to the big red glowing eyes of Makuta from the Bionicle films... sort of. if the eyes were red. But hey, I'm impressed.

Going agianst the opinion of the majority FTW! I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
Here are Mr. Bolt's results;

Toy Value: 4/5 (Wing mechanism is cool, Brain tail plug in thing is epic, Glow in the dark eyes are epic)

Design Value: 3/5 (The look of the wings, the torso and the legs are the only things I have gripes with.)

Moccist Value: 2/5 (Pieces we get are average, with new ones that are difficult to MOC with)

Overall Value: 9/15

That's all, folks! ;)

Quoting Legobob 29 I tried Aquagon's brain parasite and it doesn't look too good in my opinion, it blends with his face too much. When I get the rest of the wave 1 Brain Attack sets (I need Rocka, Breez, Scarox and Ogrum to complete the Brain Attack collection which I'd like to do) I'll try Ogrum's.
Ah well... The blue one is the one they used in the TV episode, so that's why I asked :P

Quoting Ben Cossy Nice review :D Gotta love that brainslug! No idea if I'd every use it in a MOC though :P Anyway cool stuff ;)
Thanks! That brain parasite is cool, but it's very tricky to use it in a MOC, so yeah.

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate . Here we go again! I'll have to read those reviews. Your point about the Chinese dragons is interesting (I do know what you mean). Hmm, interesting that they should choose to alter the TV version in that manner. If it was exactly twice the size, I wonder if it's so that kids will pester their parents into buying two. Food for thought.
Hah, I doubt that was Lego's thinking behind it, but if it was, I would laugh :P I can't remember if he was exactly twice the size, but I think that it was just they upsized Dragon Bolt so that Jet Rocka would be less redundant to the situation. But yeah :P Oh and if you're actually interested in seeing the episode, I'll just drop a link for you, even though you're not really missing much :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4GidyyLtUY

Quoting Wertman 8 Oh dear not another long comment chain! XD Yeah, I did notice the size of the head myself when reviewing it, and I was going to mention it, but then I decided not to, for I quite liked the idea of a big head. Kinda reminds me of those Chinese dragon things with one person dressed up as the head, and the rest of them making up the tail, if you know what I mean. In the TV programme, his wings had twice as many feathers and his tail was twice as long. They just sized up the model to make it dwarf Jet Rocka and the other Heroes. People have to remember the set was designed before the model in the programme, so they can't really critizise it for not being like the one on TV. Yeah, as you can see in my Bruizer and Scarox reviews, I'm not a huge fan of those discoloured technic functions, but considering most people know how I feel about those things, I didn't make a big mention of it this time around. Thanks for commenting! ;)

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate . Great review as usual Wert! I'll try not to start any long-running debates on this one. I'll say this though: The head seems a little too big, and I think that's why everyone almost automatically thinks he's too small. I haven't seen the TV show (it doesn't get aired in Australia), but I suspect that version is more proportional. The big red button gets me down. It was nice, in the 2001 and 2002 titans when the function activation pieces were almost concealed, or were coloured in a way that wasn't too conspicuous. But I think a set like this is what we're going to have to expect as the affordable HF titan. Great review though.
