Astrav Kaita
Bio Cup 2013, Round Four
About this creation
Contest: Bio Cup 2013

Name:
Astrav [Kaita]
Occupation:
AOMN
Alignment:
Lawful Good
Allegiances:
Army of Mata Nui [a very militaristic, less secretive extension of the OOMN]
Origin:
AOMN test labs
Powers:
Elemental control of Magnetism, Gravity, and Lightning
Kanohi:
Garai, Hau, and Sanok
Weaponry:
creatively-titled Big Sword
Status:
Nonexistent
Personality:
Basically, the same as Astrav is normally, except slightly paranoid, with alternating inferiority and superiority complexes.
Bio:
The AOMN decided to make two clones of Astrav (identical except for masks and elemental powers, which they modified) and then forced the three into a Kaita. Since all three Astravs were in effect the same being, they didn't have to worry about the mental confusion experienced by other Kaita in the past. The test went reasonably well but the trio was split again afterwards.

AAAAAARGH VACATION

Don't get me wrong, I love vacations, it's great that I have the opportunity to go to cool places and whatnot... but they have the worst timing ever. The Lancer T5 was built in three days, I had literally one day between vacations in which to build this, and my next EBC entry will be built in less than a day, if I manage it.

I've heard the whole "considering the circumstances I think it's cool" argument, but I'm still disappointed. I do like this entry... as a WIP. I do think of it as unfinished, since it was quite rushed, but I'm not likely to make an effort to improve upon the build unless I make it to round five (in other words, I'm not likely to make an effort to improve upon the build).

Here's the issue. The torso and arms together looks great. The torso and legs together looks great. The whole thing together somehow looks very weird. It's something to do with the proportions, but I'm tired of looking at the MOC, so you guys can just tear it apart in the comments, eh?

ANYWAY, thank you all for viewing, good luck to everyone still in the Bio Cup (and, if I may be so bold, to myself)... and while you're stopping by, why not check out some of my recent MOCs?

xD I was being a derp... So that answers your question... :P BTW, I'm gonna be uploading a huuuuge wave of MOCs. I have probably five or six built, they've been sitting around for over a month. I have been.... lazy. Anyhow, if you wouldn't mind checking them out, please do! :D I'd love to get your opinion!

Quoting Indy Happyface :D Trololo! XD Glad I was able to confuse you Chro... :3
Wait, what the heII are you taking about? :P
Quoting Indy Happyface :D Actually, I just wonder if you're gonna make those clones of Astrav, and if you're gonna continue to milk the Astrav theme, or are you done with the character by now?
Nope. I wouldn't have built more versions of Astrav at all if the Bio Cup hadn't required it. I'm done with him for now.

Quoting Indy Happyface :D I like it, but it's pretty much just a really beefed-up version of Astrav, huh. :/ Oh well, still pretty neat!
Um... it's supposed to look like a larger form of Astrav. But if you mean literally? Nope. This is a totally different build.

I got to say... maybe a better shoulder would give it a better look.

Good build and looks like the character. Looks a bit too much lik ti, to be precise, and even though it might fit the height requirements, certainly don't feel like a giant to me (more like just a tall Toa). The whole back area could use some work (specially with removing those pistons on the legs, wich look just bad), and the torso armor looks too flat, some angles in there could do wonders to this. Still, is a nice MOC by itself, it has a good color scheme and posture, so it deserves at least a 7.

Very true to original. At the first glance I had a hard time telling what was the difference between this and the original. As such it's pretty safe to say that this doesn't feel as "titan" as it could've been at it's best. Technically it's quite supreme, but feels merely "upsized" and a bit blocky in some areas. Definitely a good build, but lacks equipment. 8 points.

I agree with Yuri, but given the limited time you had to build this, this is quite good! You're score: 8

A technically brilliant MOC, very clean and tidy. That said, there's an absence of shape to the limbs as they appear quite blocky. The size doesn't imply as much of a titanic feel as I know you're capable of. Still, here's a 9. Enjoy your vacation.

A very cool titan form for Astrav, but I feel it's not much more than a frame. Of course your humanoid frames are among the best around, so you're gettting high marks all the same, though not as high as you could with some little... something. Like, armor, wings, weapons or whatnot. 8 points.

This is superb work, Chro, and fitting your skill-level. For each limb; closure and thickness, but NOT overcladding, for the torso?; nice layering and tapering - and I like the colors chosen almost as much as their placements - the yellow ankle shackling at the terminal end call attention to the limb-length, I think. A proportional weapon choice, and a well-chosen mask, as well. If there were any nitpicks - it would be a wish for some deltoid armoring in a nice shell or curving shape to suggest the 'musculature' planned on the rest of the frame - but that's really just windowdressing, in the end. I find myself in the rare position of assigning 10 points. I was torn, but think it deserves the rounding-up. Cheers!~

Quoting Jak TheMad Really like it, but as you yourself said below, it seems more complimentary than a full creation in it's own right. But hey, I doubt I can talk, I've got a long way to go before I reach this good yet. XD
Nah, you're pretty good already. Thanks Jak. :)

Quoting Max W. Um. Its kinda bad. It doesn't stand out to me, and there's little bits just about everywhere that could be fixed. Matter of fact, I'm pretty sure the first bonkle-related advice you gave me was "That has too much exposed technic on the legs". Or maybe it was Tyler. Point being, I can see it was rushed. Ah well, maybe next year time will favor us both a bit better.
I definitely didn't tell you that, considering I actually like the look of exposed Technic if done correctly. But yes, I agree, let's hope for better scheduling in the future. ;)

I'm with you on parts individually looking cool, but together not so much. It (to me) gives off a vibe of simply making him a bit more lanky to make him look like a titan. Regardless he looks alright, not so great but cool :D

It's not terrible, but it's not the best either. I know it's rushed but it's still has its good bits. That piston in the back of the leg doesn't look well at all, the back is a little plain, but it's not terrible. Good luck!

Nice build. It seems as if the Bio-Cup as chosen horrible timings, eh? Though I do respect you for not forfiting or just quitting. I do see the rushed factors in this....those pistons....something doesn't look right there. The colors still fit nicely! But the torso looks disproportionate as compared to the legs, that simply means the torso is a tad small compared to the length of the legs IMO. Though I feel like I can't blame you for the flaws as you didn't have enough time as other competitors. Despite that it's a pretty nice moc. ;)

Solid entry here, but you're right about how rushed you were and how "it's okay given the circumstances" or something...I love the torso, it's sturdily built and the armoring is great. The legs look similarly sturdy and well armored save the knees (they look awkward) and I can't say I'm a fan of the pistons but I imagine that they're necessary to his sturdiness. The arms I don't really like, especially the lower arms. Good work though, and good luck into round 5.

This isn't actually as bad as you seem to think it is Chro, but I understand your problem. I have the same one with Reaper. And i suspect if you, say, took the legs off to modify them, they'd look great and you'd think, "There's not much I can do here". So you'd pop the arms off and have the same problem. You'd put it all back together and end up with something very good (which is what this is), but also just a little off. But, all that aside, this is a nice build. Not sure if Kaita is quite the right title, as he doesn't look like three beings merged, but I see where you were going with the idea.

Quoting Wertman 8 Nice one dude! It's a nice build, but as you said, It could have done with some finishing off in terms of armour and colouring, but anywhoo. Also I'm not feeling the whole Kaita thing. I know they're all meant to be clones, but it still just looks like a bigger version of Astrav rather than a combination of three different people. Whatever, good luck in the contest!
It's not supposed to look like a combination. I just wanted to give it a more creative story than "THIS IS ASTRAV BUT BIIIIG".

And @ Chro: yes, yes you should have :P it worked on Mael, after all! (Course, on his v3, I stuck on some black custom pistons, which actually look pretty nice)

Quoting Garrett A. Although, I agree with Inthy down there, two balljoints would have looked sooooo much better.
It would've looked better, but it wouldn't have worked so well. With the way the legs are designed, the piston has to have one point that swivels and one that rotates; if it had balljoints on both ends it would collapse.

Quoting Cevka . Not the best but still good, that piston just... I don't know, the pistons look bad, the back is plain but it's good enough to please me. he does have some empty places it looks, I know it's rushed but it is good IMO. Good luck!
I agree that the pistons look bad, but they were a necessary evil. Without them he couldn't manage much movement without falling over. What do you mean by empty places? The only real gaps as far as I remember are the gap between the pistons and the legs, and the small space in each elbow.
