EDIT: Kopaka Revamp (Fully Flexible!)
I fixed the lower arms (somewhat) on this guy before I took him apart and I took a couple of new pictures to give a better idea of his actual proportions. There is a new Bionicle underway. Enjoy!

Proof of proportionality

Inspiration for the next (and so far, much better) Bionicle from County Spathens

Okay, there will be a lot of text on this page since I’m a big fan of Kopaka (and I tend to splatter the fourth wall all over the rest of the structure), so I’ll cover the important information here. This BioMOC was inspired by Fenrek (Fluffy)’s recent revamp of Tahu Nuva, and I directly owe the upper-torso and shoulder designs to him and have no intention of being called a plagiarist, so here are the links one more time:

Fenrek, if you’re reading this, please accept my gratitude.

Now, let the fun begin.

Quick Story

Gali: “Oh, not again.”

Whoosh!
Pohatu: “Sister! Brother! You will never believe where Kopaka and I were – the Red Star! But first, what is going on here?”

Gali: “Look at them! Fighting once again over who is the best, as if we were not all Toa Nuva.”

Lewa: “Ha! You are useful-good to Matoran who drop their entrance-keys on a dark night! What sort of element-gift is flashiness next to my air-strength?”
Takanuva: “At least I am not confused for a brakas monkey up in the trees. Anyway, I’m the Chosen One.”
Tahu: “All right Harry Potter, who’s the leader of this team anyway?”
Pohatu: “Ah, I see what you mean. We should find Kopaka before he joins in.”

Onua: “Too late.”
Kopaka: “Why don’t you tell us, brother?”

Tahu: “Who would you say, brother?”
Kopaka: “I would say that it is time for someone to grow up and realize that having red armor is not indicative of divine right to rule, brother.”

Tahu: “Then let’s see whose armor is the best. I challenge you to find your best armor upgrade and meet me here in an hour’s time. Then we will see who is viewing the world through a distorted eyepiece…”
Kopaka: “…And who is full of hot air. Agreed.”

And here is Kopaka in quite a bit of glory!

Character Bio
Name: Kopaka
Species: Matoran
Element: Ice
Titles: Nuva, Phantoka, Hero, Spirit, Toa, Brother…

Primary Kanohi: Akaku Nuva, Great Mask of X-Ray Vision. Also possesses eleven other great and noble Nuva masks whose powers can be shared with those around him.
Equipment: Adaptive armor from the island of Artakha, Ice Staff, Ice Sword(s), Shield, Skis, Midak Skyblaster, Ice Bayonet.

History: Kopaka, his brothers, and his sister were once a team known as the Toa Mata devoted to the preservation of the Mata Nui robot. Before they were deposited on the island of Mata Nui, stripped of their memories, they had set out from Artakha to the region known as Karda Nui, where they saved the Av-Matoran population from a Rahi infestation. Once their mission was complete, they entered transport canisters in the Codex power station that kept them in stasis for millennia before ungracefully depositing them on Mata Nui.
During their time on Mata Nui, the Toa Mata defended the Matoran villagers from multiple attacks launched by the arch-villain of the Bionicle world, Makuta Teridax. As a result of one of these successful campaigns they were plunged into six vats of energized protodermis, which enhanced their powers and transformed them into the Toa Nuva.
As Toa Nuva, the team fought Bohrok-Kal, Rahkshi, and, on at least one occasion, each other. Kopaka and Tahu were the stalemated victors of the latter battle. During the Coming of the Seventh Toa (Takanuva), Kopaka singlehandedly defeated a trio of Rahkshi that had previously bested the combined might of Tahu, Gali, and Pohatu and destroyed Ta-Koro, by snap-freezing them and dumping them in a pond.
Following the destruction of the Mata Nui robot, Kopaka and Pohatu joined forces to track the murderer of the rather malicious entities Karzahni and Tren-Krom. They were transported to the magical Red Star by a suspicious mutant and were there abandoned amidst a number of hostile beings. The canon Bionicle story ended on that note.

Personality: A head-shrinker would have a feast with certain traits of the Toa Nuva, particularly Tahu’s temper and control issues, the psychic powers exhibited by Gali and Lewa, and Kopaka’s general anti-sociability. In simple terms, Kopaka is cold and distant as befits his element. “Taciturn” is a good word for him. In expanded terms, his arrogance and stubbornness coupled with his considerable strength and ability leads him to express that he does not need anyone else, and therefore does not want anyone else. The degree of this conviction is unclear, because although he persists that many of his brethren irritate him, he deeply cares for some of them and will even help Tahu if the need arises. His relationships with his five teammates are as follow:
Pohatu, the jovial Toa of Stone, may well be Kopaka’s best friend, although Kopaka would never admit it. Kopaka has the sharper wits and a sharp demeanor to match, but Pohatu’s persistence in joining or following his brother earned him a certain tolerance from the Toa of Ice. Pohatu was the first Toa that Kopaka encountered after his arrival on Mata Nui, and they have teamed up consistently ever since.
Fire-Toa Tahu, an even better foil for Kopaka than Pohatu, positively infuriates his icy brother. The two are alike in terms of bull-headedness and ego, but are set even farther apart by Tahu’s fiery, illogical temper and Kopaka’s colder, sharper counterpart. Kopaka frequently challenges Tahu’s right to lead but, thanks to his dislike of teamwork, he remains the deputy.
Gali, Toa of Water, probably commands more of Kopaka’s respect than any other Toa Nuva. Like Kopaka and Onua, she thinks before she acts, and, even better, she returns the respect of each of her brothers, constantly working to keep the team together. Some fans hold that the rivalry between Kopaka and Tahu extends to competing for Gali’s favor, but, alas, the storywriter made sure to avoid any concrete evidence of such matters. Then again, the official story was geared toward elementary-schoolchildren.
Toa of Earth Onua shares much with Kopaka: he considers every move carefully and speaks only when needed. On the other hand, Onua uses wisdom rather than cold calculation, and lacks the ego issues of Lewa, Tahu, and Kopaka as well as Gali, Lewa, and Pohatu’s outgoing natures. For this reason Kopaka, who rarely speaks unless spoken to, seems to have little to do with Onua. Ironic, isn’t it.
Flighty Lewa, Air-Spirit and self-styled Mystery-King of Know-Nothingness among other things, has a personality that extends for a meter around his body and therefore prickles Kopaka’s bubble. However, Kopaka’s attitude toward Lewa is one more of exasperation than dislike, and Lewa has matured since arriving on Mata Nui.

Detailed Pics

This is my version of Kopaka’s flight suit, a pair of glider wings that sprouted from his armor in his last incarnation. The primary differences between the equipment I used and that of the Phantoka set are the mask (which has the advanced eyepiece on the correct side of the face) and the jet engine on the wing pack.

The Midak Skyblaster has a few changes as well. Essentially, I turned it upside-down and attached a handle and a fancy tube. Quite an improvement, no?

Ah, the natural state of Kopaka’s equipment: a shield and a pair of skis that can transform into his primary weapon. The pose in the above picture is based on one on the Nuva canister, and is physically impossible.

Did I say that the skis transform into the primary weapon? Oh, yeah… they don’t. Chalk it up to the adaptive armor, but I completely ditched the double-bladed ice staff because that looks like a clumsy weapon (and my skis didn’t fit together). Instead, I gave him a system-built ice sword.
This is the second canister pose with changes due to the more realistic positioning of the shield on Kopaka’s arm and the aforementioned lack of an ice staff. The sword transforms!

This is the sword in its compact form. Basically, it’s a fancy hilt that Kopaka uses as the nucleus of a blade made of ultra-thin ice or frozen air. With his ice power he can maintain a molecular edge and a blade that is practically invisible (code for, I didn’t have trans-blue antenna pieces).

When Kopaka needs a strong blade more than a sharp one, his weapon extends into this hand-and-a-half protosteel sword. The hilt decorations reverse to extend his grip and the blade extends from nowhere.

These are the best poses of all – the characteristic stance of Kopaka Mata. See why I ditched the staff?
Also note the flywheel on Kopaka’s back, which replaces the gear. This reference to the original models helps set my revamp apart from Fenrek’s Tahu.

Poses! Showing off like this is not really Kopaka’s style. Showing off in battle or surrounded by his element, yes; posing for a camera on a dingy white background, no. Onward to the flexibility!

Note my characteristic double-jointed knees. I prefer functionality to sleek form, perhaps because I’m bad at sleek forms.

Well, the torso looks really good in this picture, functional or not. It’s weird, but sometimes this version of Kopaka looks very muscular.

More flexibility. The legs bend at 90 degrees to the waist block, and the waist block bends at 90 degrees to the upper torso. Do you know how hard it is to do that and still look good? VERY HARD! (It took me a week to do Kopaka)

This is the customary pic to prove that Kopaka can do the splits, but take a second look – the torso rotates 90 degrees to the side as well! It can actually do 360, but it pops all of the hoses that flesh it out so nicely.

Another look from the side, exposing the awesome detailing. The torso was the hardest part, even though I reverse-engineered its essentials from Fenrek. I had to make a lot of changes to make Kopaka flexible, and these greebles are a result.

Sadness… I hate how the inside of the arm looks. The arms are double-jointed like the legs, but much less attractive, partly thanks to the extra joint that the legs don’t have – a pivot in the upper arm.

These are Fenrek’s shoulders with one difference – I had to put a three-stud pin with a stud on the end through the ball piece, dislocating it from the socket to increase the friction in and thus the strength of the shoulder. It also stops the arms from falling off, which was a problem I encountered earlier.

It works! Kopaka can lift his arm!

He can also reach across his chest and behind his back, as this picture shows.

Do not use this neck. It imitates the look of a Nuva/Mata build, but it is awfully inflexible.

Full side view

Back of the leg – I had to keep the armor thin here to allow the 180 degree fold shown earlier.

Front of the leg (from a funny angle that makes it look disproportional)

These are my ball-joint-free ankles, built that way because I don’t have many of those wonderful little black ball pieces. The 3-stud-tube is a bit ugly, but it’s the best way to keep friction high. Pretend it’s something robotic.

My feet are fairly dull except for the skis’ attachment points.

Size comparison to an Inika build, a Nuva build, and a Turaga build. Hmm, does that Turaga remind you of anyone?

Extras

That’s right, it’s Pohatu! It only makes sense that he has a Kohli stick as a staff of office, right? Even if you aren’t sure about Kopaka, be sure to rate my page for this little guy!

I promised Onua as well, didn’t I? Well, here he is.

The only difference from the original is the presence of those awesome claws and the resulting extended handles on his quake-breaker drills. I never liked the fact that he had to give up his Mata weapons for some glorified chainsaws.

Shadow Onua: “I’ll give you ten seconds to run. Then my claws will come off of my eyes… AND INTO YOUR FLESH!”

I almost forgot these two pictures. Before I started on Kopaka I was trying to find a better way to do Lir, one of my own characters. I made a new torso, but I ended up swapping out limbs with Albertus, another of my characters, so her limbs are rather bulky for her frame. I love that hood (when it’s properly attached, unlike in these pictures), but I just can’t get the rest of the figure to work. Any tips or ideas are appreciated.

Farewell Note
“Then let’s see whose armor is the best. I challenge you to find your best armor upgrade and meet me here in an hour’s time. Then we will see who is viewing the world through a distorted eyepiece…”
Why not take the challenge (which was, in fact, inspired by a scene from a Lewa revamp)? The Toa Nuva were the first and finest of all Bionicle warriors, and many of them have been forgotten by the best Bionicle builders in the world. I scanned the Internet for Nuva revamps while I was building Kopaka, and many of the Toa are lacking in skillfully-done, custom-built resurrections. Others have one or two, but there could be more. Listed in order of greatest need, they are:
Gali ~ Kopaka ~ Takanuva ~ Lewa ~ Pohatu ~ Onua ~ Tahu
Keep that in mind when you next look at your Bionicle parts, and… what was that other thing… oh, yes. Be sure to leave a rating and/or constructive criticism!

Awesome! I had no idea you did BIO-MOCs...Well I guess you learn something new every day right? I really like this, definitely one of the best Kopaka Revamps I've seen (of course, now I have to do mine again and make it better than yours =P). It's true there aren't many Nuva/Mata revamps. Everybody does a Tahu (WHY?!?) but there are almost no really great versions of the others. Anyway, I like it all except the sword, I always liked his double bladed sword So I don't really like this one much. Still, awesome revamp!

The build itself looks very nice, but I think the tools, like the sword and skates, look a bit small and thin in comparison. But overall, a great revamp!

Very nice revamp! Kopaka was always one of my favorites, you did a perfect job. The double jointed knees is a great idea. Little details like that make him all them more awesome. And not only is he flexible, he looks good.

Pretty great! I love the weapons, and looks like your pretty good at reverse engineering, the upper body looks very similar! I like the ideas you have, and I love onua's claws! The only thing I can really complain about are the lower arms, they are a bit gappy, so I would cover that up. Other than that, amazing job! :)

Quoting Berial . Nice revamp! Very custom and well built, it certainly does justice to the character! The proportions are a bit weird though, you should work on them.
I thank you for the fine words and solid advice. The proportions are actually fairly accurate; the photography distorts them. I sense an edit in the future.

Quoting Fenrek (Fluffy) More of my work influencing others. Any who, great overal moc but my only bit of advice would be to redo the lower arms, it's kinda odd how thin they are and the elbow just hangs right out there. Like the unique back design you've done and pretty creative with his gear too.
Thanks. I always run out of steam by the time I reach the arms, but I think I'll fix them before he comes apart.

Quoting Toa Infernum Wow! Incredible work Gilbert! Great designs and I love the posability! Hmm, maybe I'll do a Mata revamp sometime ... I also didn't know about them going to the Red Star... I gave up on Bionicle during the Glatorian years, I was young and it was so confusing. Anyway, great work! =D
Thanks! I used to follow the Bionicle story like Star Wars/Trek fans followed their space worlds, but I gave up on the Glatorian, too. I had to use the Bionicle Wiki for the bit about the red star.
