About this creation
For my Moc-off against TX-008 [1998].

This MOC was one of my most difficult ones yet, and I probably spent longer on it than on any other MOC before. One point of difficulty was the size. It's larger than the set, which was already fairly big, so my revamp is about 60x40 studs, which is my largest MOC yet. Even not including the track bit that sticks out from both ends, it's still about 30x40 studs, which, compared to my other creations, is far from small.

The original set.

My revamp.

The mining tower, which, aside from the track, was the first part I built. The wheel was the trickiest part, as I didn't just want to use a one-piece wheel like in the set. My wheel is made from this, this, and this. The robot hands are clipped together to create a 3 stud long Lightsaber blade (they come in this color, but I do not have any). I tried using the 4 stud long Lightsaber blades, but they were too long and the string got caught on them.

Stonework on the side of the mine. Getting it to attach to the plates at the top and bottom was tricky; my eventual design revolved around the use of this and this.

Inside the mine. The set just used a BURP for the rocks here, which made the inside detail very limited. With my brick-built rocks, I tried to improve the interior of the mine.

The blacksmith's shop in front of the mine and some rockwork.

The middle building, with the doors and throne room.

The throne room from behind. Like the mine interior, the original set had very little detail in here. I made up for that lack of detail with a tiled floor and more interesting rockwork on the walls.

Doors open.

The side tower with catapult and chute.

Inside the bottom part. This part is basically a living area, and, like in the set, features a barrel and a stool.

Playability features! My revamp has all of the playability from the original set. When you spin the wheel on the top of the mine...

The bucket raises and lowers.

This bucket can be loaded here.

Move it along the tube to the chutes...

Where it can be dumped into the bucket below! The original set only has one chute, but I had to add a second one since the tube was not long enough to reach the lower chute, as my revamp is larger than the original set (in length and width it's about 10 studs larger, but in height it's the same size). It still works as well as the one in the original set, though, and the extra chute makes it much more fun!

The catapult is similar to the one in the original set, but the colors are more organized. Of course, it can fire.

The trolls attacking the mine. Rather than just have them loosely standing like in the set, I connected them on a base. Due to the irregular base shaping in my revamp, the base is attached to the end of the mine cart track with a plate hinge.

Thanks for viewing!

Quoting J D Awesome Job, I'd buy yours before the original!
Not if you saw the price tag :P (probably at least five times the original, if not more, it's way more piece intensive)

Nice job! Both MOCs are great and look very much like the original. You get my vote because yours looks cleaner. Though that base that the Orcs sit on looks a bit tacky. Good job though!

You have my vote! Your revamp had some more details and from what I can tell, cooler play features. I really like that extra chute there :D The rockwork really stands out here too. Nice!

Quoting The Timinater ! IMO, what you have done is changed the large pieces to many small pieces, which looks great, but I reckon you could have expanded this, or changed more stuff on this MOC. Don't what you've done looks good, I just wish you had done more.
Thanks for the input. Actually, the parts that took the most time were the stonework on the side (getting the necessary offsets was really tricky) and the landscape around the track (used up just about all of my dark grey plates and tiles). There's a lot of other changes I did as well, such as a more organized color scheme, better texturing on the wood parts, making it bigger.... Unfortunately I probably didn't show that well on the photos. I'd have liked to do more, but I just ran out of time and ideas....

Quoting A M Nice one! The addition of the curved track piece was a very smart move in my opinion. Great texture throughout!
Thanks A M! I originally intended to not take any parts from the original set so that I could have some comparison pictures, so I used those tracks, since they're the same size as the ones in the set, and even though my plan to not use any pieces from the original didn't work, I like the look that the new tracks give it.

Quoting {JOG} Josh O. Nice I like yours better! I have the set!
Thanks Josh! I just wish I could have them both built at the same time for a comparison. My set is mostly built but still many pieces had to be taken from it to make this...

Quoting Gilbert Despathens Hmm... I think I would be more excited if you gave it a style twist to set it apart from the original a little bit more. I don't know if your contest allows that, but it would make it easier on my head, which had difficulty catching all of the custom tricks because they looked so much like the original. And it does look like a perfect copy at first glance, which I suppose was the idea.
Thanks for the comment! I did try to give it a slightly darker atmosphere by removing some of the lighter colors in certain places and removing some of the random dark blue and gold bits. Yep, my main goal was to keep it true to the original while refining it and adding more detail, so I'm glad that was a success!

Quoting Evan 'Beardless Dwarf' Botkin Very nice! I think the smithy should have gone inside though. Still it looks much better than the original and I would rather buy this (assuming price was the same).
Thanks! I agree, it would make much more sense to have the blacksmith inside, whereas outside he's just waiting for the trolls to steal from him! But I kept him outside to keep it accurate to the original. Haha, I'd also rather get it than the original if the price were the same; I'd get five times the amount of pieces! :)

Quoting David . Lego has a way of making cool sets with about half as many pieces as we do. Why all the flat pieces between the levels? Anywho, nice revamp.
Thanks! Yep, it's amazing how they do it. I tried making a western town in set style recently and getting the parts efficiency was really difficult. The pieces in between the different levels on the buildings were to keep it accurate to the set.

Quoting Achintya Prasad Lego should take a tip from you.....Nice work! 5/5
Thanks Achintya! Unfortunately I estimate (which is probably way off) that it uses about 5 times the number of pieces in the set, for a total of around 2500. So it would be a very expensive set!

Quoting Michael K. Is it a MOD or from scratch? Anyway, looks better.
Completely from scratch. A few small parts are just mods (some of the bucket system) and the mine carts are the same as the ones in the set, but other than that, everything's built from scratch.
