True Cop Episode 3: Suspicions
Ladies and Gentlemen, finally presenting you the third episode of True Cop!
About this creation

John walked up to the address.

A team was leaving with evidence.

He opened the gate and approached the officer standing in the small yard.

The officer looked up, "Ah, Detective. I'm Tony Morgan. And I should call you-"

"Russo. I hope I'm not to late."

"Nah. Detective, uh, Snow, I think, is still inside."

"Follow me."

"Watch your step," Officer Morgan cautioned, "Suspects forced open the door, broke the knob."

"He 's in there."

John entered the small living area. "Excuse me, I'm Detective Russo, I'm here for a Detective Snow."

Snow turned around. "Ah yes."

He turned back to the other man. "Thank you for your time, sir."

"So," John started, "what happened?"

Snow filled him in.

"Woman two doors down heard gunshot, calls 911. Responders find the lock on this front door was damaged, nobody's home. They come in and find the victim face down on the kitchen floor. We identified him as Anthony Soldan. Mr. Soldan's roommate arrived 15 minutes after we did."

"He was probably about to eat, though I don't know what kind of person has chicken for breakfast. He never got the chance though. Didn't even open his soda."

"We found a knife lying here on the floor. It matches others in the kitchen. I'm guessing Mr. Soldan tried defending himself but was disarmed."

"Why didn't they kill him immediately?"

"There was a safe-"

"It's missing several hundred dollars. Either he was forced to open it for them or they got the combination out of him. I guess we'll know when we get results on the fingerprints."

"Oh, yeah. That's where we found the body."

"He was dead on arrival. Coroner took the body for autopsy. We recovered a shell casing and pulled a bullet from the wall. Looked like a nine mil.

"This is Mr. Soldan's room. It and the whole place-"

"Have been ransacked. Nothing else besides the safe contents reported stolen, though."

John turned around. "Has anyone else been in the apartment the last 48 hours? So we don't confuse the fingerprint tests."

"Yeah, a repairman. He was in here yesterday afternoon."

"Ok. I'm gonna go talk to this guy out here."

"Excuse me, sir."

"Yeah?"
The roommate almost looked bored.

"I understand there was a repairman in here yesterday. What was he fixing?"

"The water heater under the stairs and the toilet."

"Is the bathroom upstairs?"

"Yeah."

John made his way up. It was more like a ladder that a set of stairs, he thought.

The place was a mess.

It looked like someone had been through the medicine cabinet.

Maybe it wasn't just the money that had been stolen...

John returned to the bottom floor.

"I'm sorry to bother you again, sir," John apologized.

"Are you sure nothing else was taken?"

"I live here, I think I would know if something was missing, Detective," the man spat.

"Well, do you have any prescription painkillers, anything else someone might want to steal?"

"What, did you you lose your hearing? I said NOTHING 's missing!"

John coolly smiled, "Thank you for your time."

What was his deal?

He leaned up on the wall next to Snow.
"Did you hear that guy? I don't know what his deal is."

"Relax, Russo. His roommate just got shot."

"I don't know, I don't like this guy..."

It was time to go. Snow was the first to leave.
"I'll take the lead on this one, Russo. Call me if anything develops."

Hmm. Something still wasn't right. But John had an idea.

"Hey, Jim!", he called to his old friend.

"Oh?"

Jim walked over.
"Yeah?"

"Your new partner, Morgan, he can drive, right?"

"Uh, yeah. Why?"

"Well assuming you can drive too, I was thinking he could take your squad car while you park mine somewhere out of sight of the house."

"Whoa. He can drive, but I don't trust him with my car just yet."

John handed him the keys.
"Don't worry, I'm sure the department has good insurance."

"Call me once you've parked it so I know where it is."

John found a good stakeout spot across the street.

His phone rang.

He pulled it out.

"Has the the valet called to apologize for wrecking my car?"

Jim smiled.

"Funny, John. Don't worry, I've parked it outside of Brian Elgart Accounting and Tax Services on Bay Ridge."

"Well, that's good to hear."

"Wait, I think someone 's coming."

"Yeah, he 's going in. I got to go."

"Good luck."

What was that man doing here, now?

He knocked.

The door opened.
"Carlos, what are you doing here?"

"News travels fast. I was sent here to check on our operation."

"You better come inside."

"In here."

"Your TV looks fine," Carlos scoffed.

The homeowner spoke grimly.
"They didn't come here for electronics to pawn."

He took a seat. "They cleared the safe."

"Even took those pill bottles full of cash."

Carlos spoke up, "Did you save anything?"

The roommate pulled out an envelope.
"These are the checks. They were behind Tony's dresser, same as the gun."

Carlos stepped forward. "I'll hang on to those."

"Did the police find anything?"

"No, but these break ins are getting more frequent. It will only be so long before they put two and two together and find the Italians are trying to cut our revenue. Then they'll come back and shut us all down."

"Don't worry. We're payed up. And, we've got a plan that should keep them off our backs for a while. In the meantime you better come up with some more money before Charlie comes around to collect your dues."

...

...

...

Well, that was fast.

Something wasn't quite right here...
