FOURTH WALL COMMENTARY

Man o' man, was this a crazy week. So, the purpose of me entering the Bio-Cup was to give me a motivation to build tempest. To build I giant mecha is something I have waited to do for years, and could never pull it off. My first attempt, was two years ago, a 4-foot tall, lanky version. Pics below. I got half way done with it, and lost the will to complete it. Besides, it could't stay up on it's own, and needed a stand.

Tempest V 1.0 (2011)

I was assuming a mecha theme would come in the later rounds. That was the purpose of making Guardian, so he can easily fit in with Tempest. To my surprise, it was actually the second round, and I SCRAMBLED. I probably showed my full hand this early, and have no clue where things are going now (really hoping it isn't a Pacific Rim theme to the whole contest). Regardless, this is a grail for me, he may be a bit fragile, and cannot use half his joints, but he is menacing as all YEAH. Very happy about how it turned out. I am a tad worried that this does not fit the requirements for a "Suit-Up" theme, but whether I make it to the next round or not, I still got what I wanted, this. Best of luck to the others!

Glad I didn't judge this round, so I can spare myself the bureaucracy and just judge it by what it is. And it is amazing! Really really great build, very very hard to pull off a design this clean and consistent in such a big scale. I know, I tried :P Its only the lower arms and fingers that don't look so good to me, but its nothing too serious. And yeah, about the way the pilot is connected, it may not be exactly by the rules, but its edgy and unnusual, with an actual concept behind, rtaher than something forced by lack of pieces or planning, and I like that. Certainly creative, and isn't that what Lego is about anyway? I wish more contestans would risk like that...

AHHHHH!!!!! Finally, a massive mech worthy of the theme. The Gurren Lagann reference is overwhelming. Interesting show, but the philosophy behind it i wasnt a fan of. Anyway, amazing moc. wish I had your collection.

@Spy, the person is the pilot, who was created for the first round of the BIO-cup. The second round's challenge was to build a mech for the character.

Who is the green character with twin shoulder cannons in the pic just before the detail shots? I really like his design. Tempest is also cool, but the feet really need some work. Not sure about the waist teeth, kinda "eh". But still definitely impressive.

Well, all the judges wrote so much, I really don't know what to say without being redundant. I really like this, but I have to discount a couple of points for the lack of poseability and the fact that the character has to be split in several parts to fit into the moc. I find that specially disappointing since he's so big he could fit the entire character on his torso. Still, well done! You get an 8 from me.

Okay, what a peculiar monstrosity you've managed to create. No doubt this "pilot dismemberment" issue has caused some strife. Funny little grey area that. I would imagine that given the size of this thing, a non dismembered pilot would simply have been jammed in the chest and that would be the end of it. Which is why I like the fact that you defended this bold move with the valid reasoning behind it. With this in mind, for either of the situations, the pilot's own mobility would not have factored into the score. The suit however does. Despite the impressive work put into the design of this MOC, proof of poseability is limited. I see arms work nicely with those click hinges (which I seriously need to get me some of those delicious things), and the present waist articulation (though I see only a single axis rotation there, a trade off from the size) that Yuri seems to have finally drilled into everyone :P But yes, the legs need to look like they're not just static blocks. I'm quite sure that any more interesting poses would result in instability and have the MOC fall over, which is a shame. You get a 7.

Quoting Clever Crowe 'Gear, I struggled with this, man. What I've settled on doing is giving you a Score w/explanation, then an assessment of the MOC, OUTSIDE of its value as a BioCup Entry.--- I don't like making waves much; Life's short and it should be full of peace, not strife. And we're all doing this to have fun (one of the flags I wave most often - check me on that). But I struggled with your having had ANY portion of your R2 (other than the R1 Pilot of course), started before the Round began. Seems unfair. I'm sticking to my feeling here, sorry: called on to pass Judgements, I must Judge. I was LESS bothered by the summary dismantling of the pilot to integrate him, after thinking it over last night. Mellowing my way through my other feelings (while still being fair to your Opponents): Tempest WILL qualify, and I'm chalking up HOW you integrated the Pilot to us Judges not specifying barred means by which to do so. Considering my misgivings, your score for this CONTEST ENTRY, from me, is a 5.----- As a general MOC, ironically - I love darn near everything about it. And that's bittersweet. Wish it could move a bit more, but if you know my tendencies, I love the giants and brutes, and this beautifully detailed MOC has both in spades. Wish I didn't find myself having to JUDGE it upon any other grounds: its quality is still a testament to your skill. Cheers, Gear.
I can tell you were of two minds on this, for sure! You wanted to love it, but your position is the problem. I think for what I've done, a 5 is the lowest I could deserve, I'm grateful enough you counted it in, thanks! Coming from you, I'm ecstatic you liked it, but hey, you're a judge. Thank you for your decision.

Quoting Monarth San Mighty visually impressive and would probably be easy 9-10 points, but as we've encountered a few issues about the execution I'll have to strip down the score a bit. For instance, the mech was supposed to be worn or piloted by the character, but in this case it looks like the mech's wearing the character instead. Talk about Hannibal Lecter of Bionicles. I do love the power rangers feel of how he combines, but splitting into pieces feels a bit wrong for the theme, beside being a unique idea. I somewhat forgive that though, which leaves this qualified for me. Second is his posability which takes another point, I guess there's not much else to it. For third, I'm not sure if it fits, but you seemed to have taken some extra time beforehand to build this judging by your comments. A bit unfair against others, but since you've used your trump card and I can't fully prove how much you made of this beforehand, I won't penalize for time. That would leave you with 7-8 points, so I'm gonna give you 7 to be fair with others. Probably not a big loss for you, as if you keep scoring like this, you probably make it to Round 3.
Thank you. And to be honest, the only bit I had built prior was the abdomen. The rest was building for 8 hours a day for 5 days.

Amazing entry. I only have 2 concerns with it: its pose-ability is very limited (like, extremely), and instead of a single cockpit, there's several mini-slots to hold the pilot. Now, that wasn't in the given theme, but it was put there to avoid "riders" stuck on top of anything, and none of us ever even thought of a solution like this. So I'm willing to consider this in theme, not by the letter but in the spirit (other judges may choose otherwise). 8 points from me, all considered. I think a better engineering on his hips and some more playing features could have won you 1 or even 2 more points. Still, well done and good luck!

Quoting [ Chro ] Alright, this is probably going to sound worse than I intended it to, but... is this allowed? I'm fairly certain that Yuri said we couldn't dismember the pilot. I'm not out to get you DQ'd, Shadow, just wondering. As I've said already, great MOC whether it fits within the rules or not. :)
Like I said, I really don't care. I got what I wanted out of this contest, and I'm so low on pieces, it's insane. If they make an exception, which I doubt, it's fine.

Away! Itza-uhicant (please wait as I stammer nonsense for 3-5 minutes) uwah! Holy cr@p man I think this is as close to Pacific rim type stuff anyone can pull off, and you did it quite successfully might I add. I need exact measurements, please. Something tells me if you had dropped it things would not be pretty. One thing I do not like and must criticize is the blatantly red inner forearm, but you probably ran out of grey, green, and black, or any other color that would have fit better. I'm not even sure I have that many pieces, in my whole collection. I would have liked to have seen more weapons than just the knee cannons maybe like some giant epic blade, or just more guns in the build. Inspiring stuff.

It's even articulated, for the...! Wait, is that a mouth detail in the belly...? Oh, c'mon!! That's... Buoh... Well, while this is absolutely stunning, and one of the best massive builds I have ever seen, I have to criticise the point that Guardian shouldn't have to split himself for the mech, I think it was Yuri who pointed that on the conversation... Anyways, good luck in the contest! Formalities, you know, don't think you'll need it...
Man, no bias, but, your comments always me feel the best! I love long drawn out paragraphs like this xD. I always find myself talking to myself about a MOC all the time, and forget to type a comment. So, it makes me happy that you're giving me a first reaction xD. Anyway, glad you liked it! Like I mentioned in the FWC, I got what I wanted, if this doesn't pass, I'm happy. If I do pass, well, Hope I don't need to build anything this size, again xD.
