REDBOSS
Bio Cup 2013, Round Two
About this creation
Contest: Bio Cup 2013

Name:
REDBOSS [Ridiculously Epic Destroyer and Badass Obliterator of Sinister Soldiers]
Occupation:
Wreckin' everything
Alignment:
Lawful Good, probably
Origin:
Unknown
Powers:
Immense strength, minor power cancelling fields
Weaponry:
Shoulder blasters, arm cannon, fists
Status:
Just short of a pile of scrap metal
Personality:
None... it's a giant freaking mech suit. If it was alive, it'd basically be Mister T.
Bio:
Astrav stumbled across this thing somewhere out in the desert. He profusely denied that the village he found it near was inhabited at the time. Apparently he was wrong, because he soon had to use the suit (which he named right off the bat) to defend himself against a bunch of Bone Hunters who had taken over the town after killing its previous dwellers. The Bone Hunters wrecked the REDBOSS, but Astrav made it out of the wreckage intact. He left one of his guns behind, though, with the trigger jammed, pointing into the fuel tanks. The Bone Hunters weren't especially lucky. The REDBOSS had done its duty. Perhaps someone would show up and repair it one day...?

Empty suit; the leg armor is mostly reliant for stability upon the leg inside it, which is why it's in a folded "kneeling" position when Astrav is not in the REDBOSS.

Astrav with the suit.

WOOOOO!
This was a fun build.
I had to pretty much redo the leg armor once I found out that I have two, not six, of that red panel piece, but I think it was better for it in the end. I also redid the hands at some point, since my initial attempt looked... strange. The back armor was tough to figure out too, but eventually it turned out looking quite nice. Other than that, this was an unusually linear build. The final version uses the very first torso frame that I tested for this MOC, and the same goes for the upper legs, hips, arms, and feet. One more thing that seems to bug people is the use of the bley 1x1 round tiles. I thought of them as large rivets or something to that effect. Sorry if they seem out of place.

As I said to Zach in the comments below:
It's not particularly supposed to look like a mech made for him- just something he found and used. Thusly it doesn't share many of his main characteristics, specifically unbulkiness or color scheme.

You may have noticed that there are no shots of Astrav getting out of the mech. The way the Technic beams were laid out in the design meant that the cockpit area, which needed to be opened to take off the arms as well, was sort of springloaded shut. This also applied to the leg armor to a lesser extent. Since these were, in effect, springloaded, I had to use both hands to pull it open and then unattach Astrav from the inside, and I don't have a third hand to photograph with... I also tried taking a video, but the results of that were awful- I can't crop video, and I needed to crop all of the photos so that none of the wall behind the backdrop was showing.
Another reason is that, as I mentioned on the second to last picture, the legs cannot stand on their own when there is no pilot inside, due to how they connect to the legs and feet. When I tried to photograph Astrav being removed from the legs, they'd just sorta flop around weirdly and I couldn't get a good picture.
All in all, there was no real way to photograph it effectively, and I'd rather have nice presentation with in suit and out of suit shots instead of poor presentation with in, out, and halfway in shots, if that makes any sense.

Best of luck to everyone.

Very cool! The colour scheme really pops against Astrav, This looks great! Really glad you decided to have it be an actually mecha rather then simply parts of armour that attach to the figure and look meh when they are not on them. Nice work (I did rate BTW, just edited the comment)

I was going to complain about the gaps on the sides of the legs, but I see you built them like that for pose-ability. I still find you could have done something with that though...ANYWAYS, everything about this is just super awesome and well done ! This mech is soo epic and chunky, I'm surprised it doesn't have a dubstep theme song LOL. Great job, I'm impressed :D

Quoting [ Chro ] Not much, I'm afraid- vacation is throwing a wrench in my plans
Why not use the wrench to fix up your plans now? :P Nah I kid, this really is an amazing entry, if you do manage to keep going you have at least a 95% chance of making top 3, and even still a pretty good chance at winning. :)

Quoting Mohamed Marei I don't think I've told you how epic I think this is.. A well-deserved move on to R3. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us :D

I really can't bring myself to give this any less than a 10, even being aware of your entry's faults such as the lack of a helmet and the uncovered thighs. It just looks so perfect! Well done, mate! Well done!

Big, clunky and stalwart. That thing doesn't move on purpose. While it would have been nice to see some entering and leaving, the overall structure looks very, very nice. Here's a 9, mostly because you made him almost look like Optimus Prime :P

That looks nicely solid. The color scheme totally works and although the shin armor feels a bit "floppy" like a kid wearing cardboard armor, I quite like it :) Nicely mobile too, considered how bulky it is. 9 points.

I think he would look good with a red/clear windshield coming over from behind and covering his face. You probably know what I'm talking about. Other than that I would say its perfect.

Quoting X ~ Well I'm pretty good at describing stuff Chro, you could give me the info to give to Garrett, but if you don't its completely fine. ;)
In order to do that I would need to first describe myself to you, which would be redundant.

I can empathize with the mechanical diff you had with your photoshoot, but; the results! =) Ever seen an anime called 'The Big O'? If not, think you might dig it. See those long, solid curved panels used as leg stocks? -Really reminded me of the giant 'Bot from that series (and slightly-less: the Mazinkaiser, and a number of other Shogun Warriors - if you're too young for the references, just Google both)=). The thick and bulky enclosure also (in a good way) reminds me of the look of a Depth Suit for your MOC. The fact that it's so stocky and STILL moves is a testament to good design. I agree with Yuri on this one: 9.

Wow. I love how you decided to completely break free from your character's theme and give him a bright red suit. It fits perfectly. Awesome little solutions to minimize the sacrifices to form/function balance. This is close to perfection, 9 points. Could have been a 10 with head armor of some kind, even if removable. Now don't get me wrong, the look is just right as it is, it would just have been very cool to have the option.

  July 14, 2013
That's OK. No h@rd feelings :). (I'm not sure whether that's censored or not, but I want to make sure this gets through) (If I ever get ahold of some grey technic bits, I'll revamp him, mark my words) And, thanks! Could I get a quick personality on him? I want to make sure I portray him correctly.

It was very nice of you to build Pirai. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful. I just didn't particularly like the MOC itself that much. If you'd like to, sure, you can use him.
  July 14, 2013
Hey Chro, why didn't you give Pirai a like? I'm sorry he wasn't custom, basically I don't have many good parts on hand for building custom, and I need to conserve resources. Plus, as I have said numerous times, I'm really indifferent about custom and non-custom. Oh, and if you don't mind, I'd like to use him in my storyline, if that's OK. (It takes place 1000 years after the death of Teridax)

Yeah, man. You got skills. I don't pay enough attention to Bionicle builds, but your work always demands my attention. I love how bulky this fellow is. The coloring is superb. I'm a big fan of the contrast in the body and head. A very nice touch. Very well done, and, as always, I look forward to what's next for you.

Neato! REDBOSS was an unexpected entry, at least for me: I was waiting for a massive mech or something on the way of Tabimir or Blackstomper , not that big, tank-like armor suit. What I love the most was the parts you used: big, more regular ones; with not so many greebles or small/thin Technic parts. This gives the REDBOSS a more familiar aura, something that it's not only limited to your style due to the massive amount of parts. It something that everyone could do, but only you managed to build. I really like that. In other aspects, I can't say anything I prefer, because I like everything: torso, arms... Even the leg armor, though contrasts a bit with the rest of the suit, looks nice overall. Great entry, dear, and good luck! =3

Quoting Stormjay Rider Nice job! Though I'm not much of a fan of smaller, bulkier suits, or of too small secondary colors, I must say you did it very well.
Bulky is just my style... and I didn't give the suit itself another color aside from black and red (or blue, if the pins count as accents) because the dark blue and yellow already present on Astrav served that purpose.

Hopefully he understands that it's made for tanking, not mobility, LOL. Thanks Matt.

It's obvious that you need to move on to the next round, because there really isn't any other valid option. Epic mech suit, I like how you left some parts of the original Astrav showing so that it looked like he was actually controlling the suit and not just his head on a heap of metal. Shoulder cannons were a great idea, too. The only thing im a bit iffy about are the grey 1x1 round caps...they seem a bit off to me. Wonderful job dude!

Quoting ZachAttacx ? Day um! This is sick bro!The overall design is amazing, makes me feel ashamed that I could never make something of this potential! The colors work very well, but I do feel it doesn't fit Astrav as much.Maybe a bit more black on the mech could help, but that's just my opinion. Great moc Chro! :)
