Magnetaar, the Polarized
My entry for the Judges' Challenge in the 2013 Bio-Cup! Come at me bro!
About this creation

An artificial being of immense power, Magnetaar the Polarized was brought into existence with a mix of crude tech and powerful magic, from a junkyard of electric hardware near the city of Jirei.

Magnetaar's near-complete control of electro-magnetism grants him both magnetic and electric powers, levitation and a powerful force-field.

His Magna-Rods can instantly severe the molecular bonds of anything caught between them, if it comes in contact with one on each side. The result is immediate disintegration.
When crudely used as weapon, they convert EM energy in concussive force, becoming explosively efficient blunt weapons.
Plus the name just SCREAMS 80's.

Top view. See the technic work drawing the negative space behind his body.
Negative space has been used to convey the "held together by a magnetic field" concept.
His shoulders have been broadened to increase the double-side effect.

A headless mask, to enhance the "being" concept rather than "creature", was inspired by the Mirror from Disney's Snow White.

The mask was suspended to give an "arcbound" feeling to the character, like it was hovering in place. Of course I couldn't actually make it levitate (the day I develop Force power I'll repost this).

The design of all limbs is inspired by electric hardware like batteries, generators and transformers.
To avoid the classic "square" look of custom libs, I had each end in a triangular section. Yes, the fact that I don't usually do custom technic work doesn't mean I'm not good at it (if I can say so myself).

The "generators" on his "back". Though this model doesn't really have a backside, only some essential components, like if the front side was only there for social purposes, to avoid that Magnetaar would look too much like the piece of machinery he basically is.

The custom almost-legal-but-not-quite-so torso articulation. The thin "V" shape is extremely appropriate for the ab section, and it adds to the "magnetically assembled" look. I basically built this character around it.

Time for some warm-up!

Huff... huff...

Let's stretch those ... ... pieces?

Wa-TAAAH!
Ready for action!

Early version of the character: Polaron, the MagneToa.
Not a bad idea, but when I saw it finished, I thought it was not going to cut it against my fellow judges.
Also, I didn't get to use that torso joint I really wanted to try.

Polaron the MagneToa vs. Magnetaar the Polarized!
You can appreciace how much more appropriate the new design is, to portrait an EM-element being. Even color distribution is better, and you can almost feel its parts humming!

Well, here it is. I hope you liked it, and seen who my opponent are, may someone other than the best man win!

Thanks to everyone who gave me photography tips these days (mostly wasted, because I was forced to used my phone since my camera broke lol), and thanks to ALL Bio-Cup players. This entry contains much stuff I learned from you, whether it was something to try or to avoid.

Comments are welcome :)

Edit: Being featured exactly between two of my favorite Bio-MOCers ever made me proud :)
Thank you all for you feedback!

Wow, long time without seeing such a surprising humanoid MOC! I really like how it turned, it's a brilliant design, as most of us expected from you. Not only the idea of levitating head, which I really, really love, but the color scheme and a lot of pretty interesting ideas for the building, like the wrists or the amazing torso with the waist design. The weapons fit them perfectly too. If I can be honest, though, I think the back of the upper torso could have been a bit better covered, but it's a small detail. I'll give you well-deserved 10 points, for one of the most original entries on the whole contest. Amazing job, dear! ;3

Alright, time to come back through and rate this thing. I love it. It's got so much character, something that a lot of the other entries so far have lacked. I feel like he could be a character in a fighter--and a really prominent one, just because of the uniqueness of the premise and the coherent design. Very cool. I would have gone for a gunmetal pipe to connect the head, but whatever. It doesn't really detract from the moc. In all seriousness though, that is a really nice waist. 8/10.

The torso/head design is kinda distracting, other than that it's pretty good.

There is in fact a red one, but I didn't even know there was a blue one. Tell you what, I think that once the judging is done I'll post a v2 with some of the modifications people suggested.

I hate to break it to you, but piece count does not imply complexity, as I value shaping above all other design, be it customness or greebling. That being said, I think you could have worked more on making the elbow area not so jutting, as a seriously extruded contour really messes with the overall design. The shoulders suffer the same, but to a lesser degree, as they could probably have been fixed with filling in the large gaps under the disk. The knees are very well integrated though, and their range of motion is impressive. As for the triangleness, I won't chalk it up as being good for the reason of uniqueness, as it's certainly been done much before, but because its roundness fits better with the battery motif. But due to the large gaps created by the offset, I think using rounder parts or perhaps even angled system could have been used to a better effect. I don't think you should have used HF feet, even though the shape is right, but because they don't have the slots/lines that show up on most of your moc. Keeping part consistency is very important; using only smooth parts, spiky parts, slotted parts, etc can really add up to a positive effect. I don't have anything negative to say about the weapons, those are a neat idea ;D I feel that the back should have been much bulkier, because in my experience, generators tend to be massive, and EXTREMELY heavy, and just two little wheels don't convey a generator look to me, especially with all the gaps showing in the back. As for the theme, I think it is executed very well. The head concept is very original, and a great way to convey magnetism. The color distribution is enough to be convincing, though I think the upper legs and the upper arm/elbow areas could use some color, like how the knees do. The 'nipples' are also questionable, filling in holes like that just because they're there isn't always the best solution ;) I also question why the larger technic parts on the waist aren't even connected. Maybe some eyes would have been nice too, the head looks a bit dead. In all, the concept makes up for the simpler build, but it can't be overlooked. It has good flexibility, but the waist (you knew it was coming) has no horizontal articulation, and 180 degrees of vertical articulation, which on its own wouldn't be terrible for this creature, but the fact that it can ONLY move vertically doesn't make sense or add much value to the posability IMO. It scrapes up a 7 for the genius of the head design and theme (I'm a sucker for stark originality), but I have to agree with Ventum, it looks unfinished.

Sweet build, Yuri. Not easy to do with so many Technic pieces. I think that is the most impressive aspect of this build. Trying to put all of that together had to have been pain-staking. Now, the part that I like the best of the build is the head. That is brilliant. I love the suspended head idea. Great work!
  July 11, 2013
A lot of interesting concepts in here, but I don't think it comes together as a cohesive MOC. I've never much liked custom limbs in the form seen here: heavily liftarm based and, despite your efforts, still blocky, just in a more triangular sense than in the rectangular sense. The style doesn't look too bad on such a mechanical creature, so my bigger issue with the limbs is that they really don't work with the torso. They're big and blocky where the torso is empty and, because of the Jaller armor, curving. Trying to expand the empty space aesthetic to the limbs would have been a better move, I think. Moving on to the torso, I do like the waist joint idea and the empty space concept, but I think you took it a little far. The back is TOO empty, and would benefit from another "floating" bit, I believe. Now the waist. While a clever joint, it's ridiculously thin. Personally, that's the one part that, had I been making a MOC that was supposed to have "floating" parts, I would actually try to float. Not sure how well it would work, but I'm thinking a piston (real or non-functional) on either side and nothing in the middle might do it. In essence, eliminating the waist, therefore also eliminating the issue of thinness. So overall, a decent MOC more interesting in concept than execution, I believe. I'll rate it when I see the other entries.

Quoting Sage Clouston I'd say you've done a good job, the concept is pretty cool although I wouldn't call innovative. The limbs are lacking a wow factor, although they are very well built, they're kinda uhh.. simple. ;) The Torso is way too thin, I understand why the upper body is but I feel you could have added a bit to the waist and lower back. No glaring flaws and I nice idea, 7 points.
Yep. I just resolved the waist issue by shortening it 1 stud. It looks better and also more mobile now, thanks to you :) Though I wonder what you'd call innovative, at this point. It's like you see hollow bodies and floating heads every day. And if you do, wow, send me some of that stuff!

I had the same concept in mind a few years back, but could not execute it as seamlessly as you have. I love this. This is levitating epicness!! A truly wonderful MOC. Edit: just forgot that we're supposed to actually rate you... I give you 9 points....the reason is that it kinda needs a bit more red/blue. But awesome entry, regardless :) Best of luck!!

Quoting Max W. I like it a lot, but I'm not going to give it a numbered rank until I see all of the entries. That said, this thing looks great. It's simple, but it doesn't have to be complicated to look good. The whole negative space motif works really well for me, and the entire design is very 80's indeed. Not that there aren't flaws, but I do like to MOC. Oh, and nice waist :P
lol I'd swear you guys were throwing that word around just to tick me off. A single leg is 50 pieces. An arm caps at 45. It only looks simple because of its compact design (and of course the minimalist torso, but there was no way around that. The floating head needs a place to float in).

Well Yuri, here we go: The overall concept is nice, and the effort you put in is clear. However, ultimately, the designs of the limbs are relatively simplistic, and, while the detailing on them is redeeming, they aren't as good as others I've seen. The "floating head" was a good concept, but the arc of piping makes him look more comical than cool. The clever red and blue on separate sides was a nice touch. Overall, 6

Simple? You come and call it "simple" to my face! Do you have any idea how many rebuilds its arms, legs and back required to get them to look right? Pfft! Simple, my axe. (JK, like you couldn't tell)
Quoting Gringat the Repugnant I have a few elemental beings on the to-do list, and I know I'm going to have to try a big empty build like this for at least one of them :) Excellent work.
Yeah, it's been at least a year since a comment on an old MOC made me want to make a magnetic character.
Quoting Achintya Prasad I don't think that I have ever fully understood Bionicle, but I do know that this is an excellent MOC! Love the concept of a floating head; reminds of a character from a TV show my brother watches, Ben 10. 5/5

I'm just going to get this out of the way: I'm not a fan of empty space in MOCs, and the torso here has a lot of empty space. However, the limbs are quite good, and compensate considerably for the torso. The color scheme also works well. In the end, I'll give this a 7. It would have been higher if the torso was less empty, but still a good MOC.

Quoting Ventum (Mittens) I am sorry Yuri but this moc bugs me. He looks unfinished and weird. The head was a cool concept, but just does not look good IMO. And that waist... That waist is ugly.
