Auckland Lego Show 2013 Recap!
About this creation
I had the meanest time at the Auckland Lego show exhibiting Amikvale Outpost, meeting awesome people, and everything else that comes with a lego show! Except keeping the kids' hands of the flowers, that wasn't so fun...

The day before I was figuring out how to get it down there in one piece. (well, five) the two largest sections sat on cardboard with rims to stop them sliding around, and the smaller three fitted (fitted?) into a box with the magic ingredient, bubble wrap!

The show lasted from the saturday until the monday, and most exhibitors turned up Friday to set up. Some were even there Thursday! But since my display was a fairly easy set up and I had to come a fair way, I just came early on the Saturday morning. After 2+ months of building, bricklinking and saving money, it was pretty satisfying to see it finally on the table :)

The view from my spot as everyone finishes setting up.

I loved my lanyard. It gave me the authority to walk past the long lines and to get behind all the tables :) And no, my last name is not Lego Castle, I'm not that much of a fan boy :P

The door begins to open, brace yourselves...

...Stampede!!!

Well, more like a slow shuffle. The line was 50 metres long already!

3NEWS was covering the event, so the show was on national TV that night!

Here you can see Nick V's stuff. We were positioned right next to each other, so we had about thirty hours to talk about lego :)

Iron man!

I decided to go check out some other exhibits while the crowd was still thin. Here you see one of the many train layouts.

Classic space, from '78 until 2002!

Main exhibit.

.

For a while Nick was talking to some guy, who turned out to be Chris Yee! So I snapped a picture of them :)

At last, lunch! The organizers just bought a whole bunch of pizzas and we went to grab some when we were hungry. This is the cool thing about these small shows, it has a real community feel to it, since we all know each other.

Thomas has his serious face on. He just made a Mocpages account halfway through the show, so there's nothing on it yet.

And a final debriefing at the end of the first day. We discussed the day, and among other things, the barrier problem. We had polls with ropes between them to keep the crowd away, but people wouldn't stop pushing them in! The crowd was so thick that we had to get up and push them back every 3 minutes, and sometimes it was so crowded that you physically couldn't push them back! I tell no lie when I say I nearly went insane that day.

So, up'n'at'em early the next morning! I decided this would be the best time to check out the rest of the exhibits.

Nick's Blue Dragon Inn was honestly nuts. So much awesomeness in such a small space.

Iron man is lying down for good reason. He fell over about nine times over the weekend, and he's not a simple build. So every time, Nick would patiently put him back together. He's a patient guy!

Did you know that airplanes are actually transformers? Because they're "robots in da skies!"

...

...

That's an original, yes, thankyou.

...

So, uh, moving on...

A local toyshop had their corner for selling Lego.

.

All that was taken before the show opened.

And now it's opening for day two!

I love this picture. The most excited face belongs to the adult!

They start coming in. It's usually way more crowded than this.

Yesterday Nick and I were handing out posters - it was absolutely hectic. We told lego we needed 5000 posters, they gave us 700. styngy! But still, I'm kinda glad they only gave us 700, because that was the craziest hour and a half of my life O.o

So today we had some more posters, but they only lasted 15 minutes.

And the line was insane. I mean INSANE. Proof?

Yup.

This is the view from the back of the line!

Thomas and Tim's Hoth layout! (not Timinater Tim, a different Tim)

Say cheese Nick!

Nick had brought along a whole bunch of Collectibles that he had bought off BL to sell, so I gave him a hand. Selling stuff is fun :) The funny thing is, there was two other people selling Collectibles for a dollar cheaper, but we still sold tons! The advantages we had were that we were right next to the door, so everybody thought, "oh, this is my last chance to get something before I leave", and that we were selling identified figs! One of us was opening bags and identifying figs while the other was managing the customers. By the end of the day, I was so sick of saying, "Hey if you guys are after a specific minifig we have some identified over here, so we can try to get it for you". But still, it was fun as :)

I realize now that I didn't get a shot of the crowd at it's thickest. Believe me, it was more crowded than this!

The figs are running out..

We opened the bags and put the fig next to it's name on the board.

...And that was Sunday! just one more day to go...

The next morning there was some film students here for a project. They did some interviews with me, but I don't know if it'll be going anywhere.

Opening for the third time. You can see the lego catalogues on the bottom that we were handing out.

When Nick turned up he brought this to say thanks for helping with the figs! Thanks heaps Nick!

.

Thomas is playing around with a msomethingm falcon which I give up on trying to spell correctly.

.

I bought a few figs from Nick the day before, so I decided to chuck the cyclops in my exhibit. The kids loved this little easter egg :)

And that's it! It was an amazing long weekend. We had about 18,000 people come through, I made some epic friends, and now I'm ready to flip head over heels to make it to the Christchurch show too!

Well done if you read all that :)

looks like you had excellent fun here! Pity I wasn't there to be there with you, I really missed out on the fun. I wish I had more time to talk with Nick V when in CHCH, but I didn't really know who he was then... Your build is fantastic, I'm glad you had fun! I knew a few people mentioned here, and I didn't enjoy your jokes, BTW :P I will be trying to get back over to NZ for some shows next year...
