Stingray Assault: Custom Aqua Raiders Lego Set | Design a Lego Set Contest
A custom Aqua Raiders themed set. Stingray Assault includes 5 minifigures, a mini sub, two stingrays, rock formation, giant stingray, and a mobile command center with a rotating detachable attack sub.
About this creation
WARNING!
You are about to embark on a very lengthy journey, so:
A. You can spend thirty minutes reading this. OR
2. You can spend twenty minutes watching the review from YouTube at the end of this post. OR
~ You can pick to spend about an hour doing both. OR
D. There is also just the option of just clicking add comment right above and just say, ":[_____] I want this set! It's so awesome-sauce and you are the greatest!"¯

So, go to the bathroom, grab a snack and a soda from the concessions, and tell your family the computer is yours for the next forever.

This was originally built all the way back in February for fun as an example for The Contest Group's 2WC 3: Design a Lego Set. It was built within the two week time period but soon after completion, I wanted to enter it in the MocAthalon, but my better judgment got the better of me (Stupid better judgment.) and so I had to wait a whole way too long to post this until now. It didn't even fit any of the categories anyway.

So yeah, the contest called for everything to feel like an actual Lego set from any one of Lego's themes. It had to have play features, it had to use Lego's regulations concerning building style and construction meaning no illegal connections or stressed parts. I chose the fantastic 2007 theme Aqua Raiders as my theme, and I am so pleased with the turnout. I still have this whole build together still because it is so much fun, and I built the thing! I know it's parts so well, and it isn't any less enjoyable than when it was first completed. I've even considered making instructions, I just don't know how.

Now, let's actually go into each part of the set! We'll be doing this as if they were bag numbers in an actual Lego Set.

Bag 1: Mini Sub and Stingrays

There really isn't much to talk about here. It's just a mini sub, and two stingrays. Like all the mini subs of the Aqua Raiders line, it comes with two harpoon guns. I felt the need to really give the set a lot of action so that's why I added the two stingrays. The big one has babies!

Bag 2: Rock Formation

This is a combination of the rocks from Angler Ambush and Tiger Shark Attack. I loved the seaweed in the one and the function in the other. Also mister skeleton has aviation headgear similar to that of the 1940's. I don't remember where I heard it from but the theme of Aqua Raiders was supposed to be in the Bermuda Triangle. This may explain why the sea creatures where so gigantic, and since it was supposed to be the Bermuda Triangle, I wanted to do something with the mysteries like pilots training and being lost out there; never to be found. The only other skeletons in the Aqua Raiders theme were a pirate and a member of the Aqua Raiders team in the Squid.

Oh, what's this?

*jackjackjackjackjackjackjackjack*

Why, it's treasure! I loved the blue crystals from Lobster Strike and had to use them. But here is the first real function of this set outside of swooshing your mini sub and baby stingrays. You push down on the Technic lever and POP! The lid detaches and you just discovered some blue tinted quartz crystals! Oh, and this Aqua Raider will be returning again, but we'll get to that later.

Bag 3: The Stingray

Now we get to the really fun stuff. This was probably the best thing for me. I had three creatures in mind when I first started; a Jellyfish, an Eel, or a Stingray. The eel would have been too similar to the sea snakes, and a jellyfish would have needed glow in the dark pieces to really be cool which I don't have many of. The stingray was the winner, and I love him. He was the first thing I built for the set and man is he fun to play with. I built him all from pieces not used from any of the Aqua Raiders sets so I could compare him to all the other creatures. Everything else in the set is primarily from Aqua Raiders sets so I could keep piece accuracy within the right timeframe.

Red stripes on top and a smooth light gray underbelly. He really stands out. When making him, I never used any references, but it's a giant stingray that if ratio-ed from minfig scale would be monstrous, so I just winged it. I decided to give it a bit of a manta look just because that is what people can familiarize with when they think stingray but it is just supposed to be a monster stingray. The tips of his wings? are poisonous with trans-red 1x1 tiles and his tail has the same thing with a trans red tip. The underbelly also shows his gills.

His wings are jointed in three places for maximum articulation. And say I were to do some sort of stopmotion, (I never will, so don't get your hopes up.) he could have a nice fluid motion when gliding through the ocean.

But wait, it gets better! His tail has is also very articulate. It can pivot at the base of the body, and is segmented to allow maximum stinging area, but it gets even better. Not only does it pivot and bend a lot more than the pictures show, it also rotates at the base of the body. The tail can do so much more than the pictures really can show which is why I reviewed this in a video, but the functions of the whole stingray still don't end there.

"I see you!"
The eyes were tough, but I got them to work. The body uses some older train pieces to get the smoothness on the top.

"AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!"¯
That's right, he even has a mouth. Not the best, but at least now he can nom.

Here we see my floor with all the other Aqua Raiders monsters except for the sea snakes. I think our stingray fits in quite well. And we are just half way complete with what this set has to offer.

Bag 4: The Mobile Command Center

So by now you're probably wondering if this could even be an actual set. Well, it would be about $100+ USD because there is so much in this set, but don't fret, this isn't one of those things that looks cool and that's all it does. If you were paying $100+ for this, you're getting your play functions and value for your money. This thing also has quite a bit to it, but we have pictures that accurately show those.

The front has an opening cockpit and features hand controls for the driver and screens for radar and other things you would find on a science-fiction dashboard.

We have pivoting spear thingies...

A door to observe the engine...

An opening back door which really doesn't add up because water would be getting inside, but it does open...

And a removable top! Inside, you can find tools and gear, places to store them, and a command center. So what you do is find you guy from Bag 2...

And you strip him of all his gear and get his beanie cap. And place him inside this very comfortable command center.

And after being seated comfortably inside, you slap the lid back on top, but what is this?!

There's this silly peg sticking out of the top! What could that be used for? Well stop being so impatient! I warned you this would take awhile.

Bag 5: The Attack Sub

You may be trying to figure out how this is a sub, but I'm going to start explaining everything to you right now, and you will find out how that peg comes into play. This thing pulls a Slave I on you.

It rotates. The cockpit inside moves, the weapons move and rudders become active for the propellers when it detaches from the Mobile Command Center's peg. There is a little connection spot on the back of this when it is in attack mode.

The arms can pivot on ball joints at the elbows, but the shoulders are attached to the rotating cockpit. The lift arm has a rotating blade and the right has some sort of tazer or something. Aqua Raiders had these spears and tridents and I had no idea if they were to stab, shoot tazer lasers or if they just were fired at things. I have no idea, but the right arm has some cool weapon.

You attach this to the Mobile Command Center and you have a pretty intense vehicle. But there is something wrong. The controller cannot see out of the sub like this.

This is all done by magnets. It's very complicated, even in the review; it's hard to get it to be visible. You rotate the shoulders of the arms towards the front and the magnet on the cockpit gives up and rotates up to where it uses friction to keep the cockpit sturdy. It pushes against the weird door piece that cannot be opened and then you just put the propellers and other weapons in the correct position and tuck the rudders in the pockets on the sides.

If this were a real vehicle, the propellers on the sides would rotate the sub which is now basically a turret. Oh, and those black tanks are just supposed to be like oxygen tank things.

You have fully completed the Stingray Assault review except for one last bit. The minifigures!

I picked the faces for these guys because they were always my favorite heads of these sets. From left to right, this guy was first introduced in Aqua Raiders and Mars Mission and he just looked like a youthful guy but was tough with the messed up hair and the 5 o'clock shadow. The next was just a cool looking guy. Skipping the skeleton and on to the next guy, he was just an awesome looking guy. He looked like a tough guy that was tough, but also just a big softy and would have great story telling abilities like Kevin McNally. And the last guy is just so funny looking. He's just so angry, I love it!

If you don't believe this was built all the way back in February, just check the date of the upload.

Thanks for viewing, don't forget to rate and comment. Like I said before, I was thinking of making instructions, I just don't quite know how; at least without taking pictures of each bit as I deconstruct it.

Oh, and this took me a good half a day to create this page.

Quoting Halhi 141 ...Though not-so-awesome-sauce pictures take away from awesome-sauce creation. The stingray also seems a bit out-of-place next to all of the much smoother and less blocky animals, though it might just be since you chose a fairly flat animal rather than a curvier one...
Do you own all the sets? Sure, it's not as curvy but it's a lot better than me trying to make some jellyfish or eel I don't have the correct parts for. Not so awesome-sacue? ( =.=)

Quoting Flux Capacitor Simply WOW. This is worthy of actually being an actual lego set! you've really worked hard on this. I love the playability aspect of it along with the whole 'mini-adventure' you've created with the Stingray, the diversity of the vehicles is clear and I can see that you've put a lot of thought in. Id like to see thi get MOTD. it certainly deserves it. Well done and keep up the good work!
Thanks. I'd love to see this get MOTD, too. I've never gotten it before. I've also thought about throwing this up on Cuusoo, but with the way it's been going, it just sounds like I won't get enough support. It's not that I'm not patient, I don't have the advertising capability.
Quoting Sebeus I Nicely done, good lob on the stingray, I like how you made its belly.
Thanks. I really wanted to make it pop and be such a contrast from the back.
Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Fantastic! Classic! Bombastic! Running out of "-ic" adjectives-ic! Seriously an excellent creation, I especially like the manta design. Your use of red is highly effective, great stuff.
Grasias-tic!
Quoting Stephen Boe This is great! I am loving those fins the top of the stingray!!
Thanks. I enjoy them, too. The Viking Ship's inverted slopes in dark red finally were able to be used in something.

Thanks. I need to build more in the style of Lego Sets because they are way more fun. I mean, regular builds are cool and all, but it's missing the fun factor.

I'm going to do something I don't usually do which is reply to comments, and all of them since I'm in the mood.
Quoting Mister Lego ~ Looks great! I like the stingray :)
It's so swooshable! Thanks.
Quoting David the Fire Ninja Jedi Yeah....you would have won that contest..... ;) If you decide to put it on Cussoo, I'd hope to see it produced! Fantastic once again! ~FNJ
Had I posted this right after final construction, I would have just said I had the time to build and didn't want to show everybody up. I knew I would have won just with the stingray which I built in a few days. That sounds meaner than intended, but it is what it is. I have thought about adding it to Cuusoo just because I've never done that and also it is a pretty good set design. As long as my stingray stays as accurate as possible. Haha. Thanks for the long comment.
Quoting Harry 863 Wonderful work, I love the designs

Quoting El Barto ! Awesome stuff!
You're a man of many words you are. Haha. Thanks.
Quoting Henchmen4Hire ! Are you kidding me, a giant badass Manta Ray of Death and a Deep Sea Destroyer Tank? If this set doesn't win every contest ever then I don't want to live in this crazy messed up world anymore!
Well okay then. If there is ever an "Old MOC" Contest, this will be one to consider. Thanks.
Quoting Elk Guard Great looking moc-set, very well thought out and outstanding presentation, good luck in the comp!
Well this was just for fun. I was the host of the contest and I wanted to participate, but the last time I hosted and entered, I won. I didn't want to do that again. I wanted to give everyone a fair chance. It's all for the glorious bragging rights in The Contest Group right now anyway. It's more of a build-your-skills type group.

Quoting David Alexander Smith I have so much love for that attack sub and mobile command centre. Yes, this is brilliant and you are rightly proud.
Thanks man. I loosely, and I mean loosely, based it off of an old Spyrius set. This one: http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=6949-1 with mabye a little of this Exo-Force set in mind: http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=8118-1
Quoting Nick white awesome!! this should be a Lego set....well in the past! good job!!
Thanks. I know it was intended to look like a set but it's always nice to hear that it looks like a set. Even the Classic Space MOCs look like they could be sets from long long ago.
Quoting Noah the LEGO Apprentice Ah, Aqua Raiders, I remember it well ;) Great Job!

Wow! A really awesome set dude! The command center is just plain boss (nice amount of yellow one would get) with how it moves on the ground and then the rotating attack sub thing, the Stingray fits it perfectly! The moving abilities of the Stingray are especially fantastic! The little stingrays (well, normal sized I guess) with the speeder boat are sweet! Nice blue crystals! Excellent set man, excellent! Yeah....you would have won that contest..... ;) If you decide to put it on Cussoo, I'd hope to see it produced! Fantastic once again! ~FNJ
