About this creation

This is my eighth custom skyscraper model and my twenty-first overall. Located at 230 N. Michigan Ave, the Carbide & Carbon Building is an Art Deco style skyscraper built originally for office use. In 2004, the internal structure was renovated extensively to become the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago.

This is my tenth Chicago skyscraper model. The rather simple design of this model allowed for a rather quick design period of only a couple days. It took approximately five hours to build, and an overall month to complete. Model completed October 15, 2012.

The Carbide & Carbon Building, completed in 1929, is a 37-story Chicago landmark. The building's façade is clad in polished black granite at the base; the rest is dark green terracotta with gold leaf trim.

The backside of the building. The design of this building has been compared multiple times to the design of New York City's Radiator Building.

The building's main setback levels. One challenge that this model presented was managing to use the limited types of plates and bricks available in dark green to accomplish the shape of the tower.

The crown of the Carbide & Carbon Building has been permanently illuminated at night since 2007. One popular culture belief is that architects Daniel and Hubert Burnham designed the building to resemble a dark green wine bottle with gold foil over the top.
