About this creation
The 2013 MOCathalon
Team MAD (MOCing All Day)
Category : No Gravity
A note to the judges; the category calls for 'a scene', so please take the main picture above as the scene for the purposes of judging. The rest is just a little fun :)

After a hard day of exploring, there's nothing quite like getting your hands on tickets for the Zero-G Classic Spaceball Match. Since the creation of artificial gravity and antigravity technology, Zero-G sports have been highly popular, and specially designed arenas have been created on many bases and space stations, with players using compressed-air backpacks to manoeuvre around the arena.

Excitement builds in the crowd - today's game promises to be a cracker, and features 'Team MAD' in red, and 'The Maersk Blues' who will be playing in blue.

The arena doors open, and our teams emerge.

Lining up for the obligatory pre-match team photos.

Ever professional, team MAD forms a huddle to go over the team tactics one last time.

Meanwhile, The Maersk Blues don't appear to be so focused on the game. Bruce is trying to recreate the gameball using Duplo, and Bart seems to be having problems with some sort of dark horror which is trying to pass through a rift which has opened up next to him.

The rest of the team is trying to impress the seriously hot MAD cheerleader, who is obviously way out of their league...

Umpire Phipson disengages the gravity field in the arena, and the players manoeuvre into their starting positions. The ball dispenser rises from the floor of the arena.
Some match highlights...

An attack on the MAD goal proves fruitless, as once again the MAD cheerleader provides too much of a distraction for the Blues striker - he shoots hopelessly wide!

Another successful attack on the Maersk Blues goal.
Onto the MOC itself...

The arena from above.

The arena complete with roof. This was built in sections to make photography and lighting easier.

The whole build.

A random arena shot.
And finally, some un 'shopped pictures, showing how the players were positioned.

I hope you all enjoyed your introduction to Zero-G Classic Spaceball, it was seriously fun to build :) Inspired somewhat by Speedball : Brutal Deluxe of course (for those of a certain age...)

It's been killing me to not comment on this, but I last I have time! Incredible build! The size is jaw-dropping, and I'm amazed that you built a ceiling as well. Love the humour as well, great to see our illustrious team immortalized in Classic Space. I'll take staring at a cheerleader to winning a game any day. ;) Awesome work, well-deserving of your perfect score. |

Seriously fantastic! I thought I spotted a semblance to Speedball - Brutal Deluxe in both style and comic tone. Hugely impressive build and brilliantly posed action scenes, your photoshopping was flawless.
Cheers Stuart, I planned to build a zero-g medic team and scoreboard too, but spent so long making this I had to draw the line somewhere :/ Ice Cream!

Wow, Jon. What to say, what to say. Spectacular? No, that doesn't quite do it. Magnificent? Getting there, but certainly there is a better word to describe this. Persuspecmagamadiferous? No, that's just silly. I guess there is no single word to describe your work here. The arena is perfect. I love all the official-looking blue and red lines on the floor and ceiling of the arena. It was a real nice touch adding the spectators' chamber and a special place for the cheerleaders. No wonder the players can't keep their minds on the game;) Perfect choice for the windows. I like how you set up for the photos. It has the feel of real sports coverage. It's hard to believe that this is a MOCathalon entry. It is, by far and away, THE best entry I have ever seen. One has to wonder, though, if this is the bar that you have set for yourself, where do you go from here? Man, I can't wait to see.
*blushes* Thanks Tim, glad you like it. Spent a lot of time on this, so may have to 'tone it down' a bit for the rest of my builds ;) |

Way too cool!!! When are season tix available? Spectacular concept expertly executed. AND a cheerleader, HUZZAH!!! I actually thought of Card's "Ender's Game" when I saw the first pic, almost military in feel. I can easily imagine the future of sports going in this direction. Now that I think of it, it also reminds me of the original BSG game, without the speedos. Top notch!!!
Thanks Matt :) Main inspiration was from Speedball 2, but there's a little BSG in there too :) |

Hey, that is slick! The design of the court is cool, but the execution of the idea realy takes the show. I am really taken with your use of the clear rods to "Float" the players. The shadows of the support rods betray you once or twice in the photos, but the overall effect is quite striking. Your athletes really seem to be flying, and without photo-shop, that is really a neat trick. Again, well done. Go-go-go-go-goooooal!
Thanks Michael, I'm really pleased how well it worked out. The 'presentation' pics all have the stands, shadows and reflections 'shopped out (I hope I didn't miss any!), and the last three are the unedited shots. I tried to hide all the stands, but with multiple lightsources, there was always a shadow or reflection visible :/ |
