About this creation
Team The Maersk Blues in category "25. Just teach it!" for the 2013 MocAthalon.

I will present something of a metaphor to illustrate the disease cancer.

On the planet Alcaz IV, there is a series of colonies, where civilized beings have nurtured the land and supported the ecosystem, keeping their world alive.

Here we see a crucial base of operations, a principal line of defence against any threats. Their sensors are second to none, and their tanks incredibly well-developped. A landing pad permits flying vehicles from other outposts to deliver information.

However, radiation and pollutants have mutated previously peaceful organisms into deadly beasts of destruction, laying waste to vast tracts of land. They are now approaching society, and the tanks scramble.

Due to the fact that the creatures are of the same DNA as their harmless counterparts, the flaunted sensors of the outpost were unable to detect the threat and now it may be too late. This small contingent of tanks seems a pitiful force indeed against the might of the mutants.

The chances of victory for this civilization are slim, help from outside seems their only true hope. Without it, the mutants will surely ravage the planet, eventually killing it.

Now, imagine that the planet is the human body, the mutants cancer cells, and the tanks the immune system. (I also use dark red to represent healthy flesh and crystals as proteins/nutrients. The helicopter and tunnel are like the nervous system, transmitting information to other regions.)

Essentially, that is cancer. Cells are mutated by radiation and pollutants, and their increased lifespan and quick reproductive cycle allows them to overrun healthy cells and infect important systems. Since they are originally from the body, the immune system fails to recognize them as a threat until they've already secured a foothold. Thus, the cells continue to replicate and destroy portions of the body until they reach a critical organ and kill the host.

Truly it is a more fearsome foe than even the great mutant spiders of Alcaz IV, I can only hope that cures become more effective in the coming years.

Fantastic way to tackle a topic than many people would not dare venture to explain on such a public site. The individual builds are all excellent. I don't feel taught, but I can't think of a better way to explain the nasty beast. Easy 5 pointer. ~Thoy

Far out! I like how you packed in all that detail through the use of unusually shaped parts. Awesome detail for a micro scale build.

Every year at my school, people from the Luekemia and Lymphoma Society do a skit to explain cancer to students, as a kickoff to an annual fundraiser. I saw your anaolgy as something kids could really relate to. In addition, the build was fantastic. 5 points.

Great rockwork, especially the shape of the mountain with the arch and the helipad. I like the clear tube with the blue brushes in it and the Technic racks, hanging like teeth in a mouth above the entrance to the tanks' hangar. The story is an interesting and thought provoking idea too.

Wow, Luke. This is some of my favorite work by you. I love the tube leading from the base to the rock and the landing platform is very well thought out. Nice use of the bio parts, (I don't know that line of LEGO very well, so I really am assuming that those are bio parts), for the tanks. The mutated beasts look perfectly menacing. Stellar work. Best of luck to you in the MOCathalon.

Quoting Justin Knelsen A great build! I love all your small vehicles and spider like creatures. Bieng a two time cancer survivor myself I appreciate the message sent. Great work, two thumbs up!

Quoting Mark Kelso This has got to be a topic that hits home to some degree with just about everyone, and the metaphor is well done (I learned something, too, Barto!). I also have to say a word about those rock formations in the build...NICE! I've got a rock structure that I'm starting on here soon, and this serves as a nice inspiration.
Thanks Mark, great to hear that I might help inspire someone who's been an inspiration to me for so long. Finish up the Eye before you get busy with rocks though. ;)

Luke, this is stunning! All the micro machines are sweet! I am loving the tunnel, and the mutants are superb! I also loved how you turned your story into real life problems! I was wondering what the build had to do with the category, and now I know!
