About this creation
My entry for the MELO MIT . I used excerpts from the chapter Flies and Spiders and kind of combined a few parts into one MOC. I plan on doing other parts from the chapter as well in other builds.
The Forest of Mirkwood

They walked in single file. The path itself was narrow and wound in and out among the trunks.

As their eyes became used to the dimness they could see a little way to either side in a darkened green glimmer.

There were black squirrels in the wood. They tried shooting at the squirrels, and they wasted many arrows before they managed to bring one down on the path. But when they roasted it, it proved horrible to taste, and they shot no more squirrels. The nastiest things they saw were the cobwebs : dark dense cobwebs with threads extraordinarily thick, often stretched from tree to tree, or tangled in the lower branches on either side of them.

They all looked, and a longish way off, it seemed, they saw a red twinkle in the dark; then another and another sprang out beside it. In the end, in spite of warnings, hunger decided them; so they all left the path and plunged into the forest together.

There, sure enough, not far away were scores of twinkling lights, and they heard the voices and the laughter quite plainly.

They crept slowly towards them, in a single line, each touching the back of the one in front.

After a good deal of creeping and crawling they peered round the trunks and looked into a clearing where some trees had been felled and the ground leveled.

There were many people there, Elvish looking folk, all dressed in green and brown and sitting on sawn rings of the felled trees in a great circle.

There were torches fastened to the trees round about; but most splendid sight of all : they were eating and drinking and laughing merrily.

The Elvish folk were passing bowls from hand to hand, and some were harping and many were singing. Their gleaming hair was twined with flowers; green and white gems glinted on their collars and their belts; and their faces and their songs were filled with mirth.

Loud and clear and fair were those songs.

Here, as in other places, the woods was not altogether unwholesome, and some things fair and pure grew here.

And at the head of a long line of feasters sat a woodland king with a crown of leaves upon his golden hair.

He was Thranduil, king of the Wood Elves.

When they got to the edge of the circle of lights they pushed Bilbo suddenly from behind. Before he had time to slip on his ring, he stumbled forward into the full blaze of the fire and torches. Dead silence fell in the middle of a word. Out went all light.

Bilbo found himself running round and round (as he thought) and calling and calling : "Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bifur, Bofur, Dwalin, Balin, Thorin Oakenshield," while people he could not see or feel were doing the same all around him (with an occasional "Bilbo!" thrown in). But the cries of the others got steadily further and fainter, and though after a while it seemed to him they changed to yells and cries for help in the far distance, all noise at last died right away, and he was left alone in complete silence and darkness.
Some shots of the Wood Elves' clearing.

A grey squirrel (my favorite) and a red squirrel are hanging out. Merlin and Arthur?

And an Easter Egg......

The Chebaccromancer!!!

King Thranduil

Thorin Oakenshield

Balin, son of Fundin

Bilbo Baggins, son of Bungo Baggins

I gave you an 8/10. I like the size of the build, the amount of details in it, and especially the Thranduil minifig but the build does look a little cluttered. Nice work overall though!
Thanks! I'd rate it about the same; I've started building in 16x16 stud limit lately so my next Mirkwood MOC should be better. Thank you, I love my Thranduil fig! |

Nice entry! Here is your score (out of a possible 10) from me: 7/10. It's nice and big and quite detailed. I like the trees with the bush upside down. :)
Thanks! I thought they complimented the orange/brown trees well. |

Nice! Although the build can still be improved, this has a magical athmosphere! I like the dark trees and the elf feast and Thranduil's crown design is wonderful too!
Thanks a lot! I had a lot of fun building it. |

Very nice! Do you know if when I was eliminated in the 2nd round of MELO, do I still enter in Round 1 of the MELO MIT?
Thank you! I'm pretty sure, yeah. So far there are only a couple entries to round one, anyway, so no doubt you're welcome to enter. :) |

Pretty good but the minifigs arent that great.
I know. I don't have any flesh colored heads or hands; I just started building again a couple months ago after building nothing for years so I did my best. It's hard to find bearded faces, believe it or not lol. Some day, I'll come back and do another version of this MOC with more accurate minifigs. I am pretty proud of Thranduil, though. Thanks! |
