This is one of my favorite Technic creations that I have made. It works like a real roller coaster. It took about 2-3 hours to build because I had problems making the gears work and making the car stay on the track. The most challenging part of it was designing it so the car stayed on the track. I got this idea from the rides I went on at the Universal Islands of Adventure and Disney World in Orlando last August. I had noticed that the cars on roller coaster and log flume rides are pulled up hills by gears in the middle of the track. When I thought of that, I decided that I wanted to try to do that in LEGO. I really like how it turned out because it works every time.

Bottom view, you can see where the bottom of the car attaches to the track. I put tiles on either side of it so the car could easily slide up and down the hill without getting caught on something.
The lever that can be turned so all the gears turn to haul the car up the track.

I also built a technic car this weekend. It is really simple compared to this, but it can be seen here.
I d really like lego to release one, the carrousel was good looking, but, a roller coaster is so much more exciting! although yours is nt very refined in colors, it does seem to work good, and your concept is neat, not much people do them, congrats! I used to have this dream of buying 4 indiana jones mine cart chase, with your system, it would really rock!
An interesting concept! I think that I will have to try out a working roller coaster sometime! In the last shot people can see the car that you built. --John
