Hero Factory Brain Attack Review #4: Furno XL
In the red corner; the big guy! He is set #44000, he is the one with 103 pieces, he is... Furno XL!
About this creation
Let's take a look at all the pieces in this set:

For bone pieces, we have one extra long torso piece,
two long upper limb pieces,
two long lower limb pieces in grey,
two extra long lower limb pieces,
two silver feet,
three friction adders,
three 3-long pinhole/ball joint connector pieces,
two simple socket connectors
one red hand
and a trans neon green new skull. (The first and only time it it not released in trans medium Green)

For armour, we have a silver Brain Attack chest plate,
two silver regular chest plates,
two wide armour pieces in red,
two sise 5 armour pieces in red,
five sise 3 armour pieces in red,
(don't know why that hand showed up again)
two gunmetal grey savage planet weapon pieces,
Furno's mask
and a transparent vizor piece with printing on.

Extra pieces include a MASSIVE cape,
two gunmetal grey shield/wing pieces,
one new silver sword piece,
three flame pieces,
two gunmetal grey mace halfs,
some little technic pieces,
and an interesting little technic piece;

I don't know if this piece has cropped up before on any set, but as far as I'm concerned, this is a new piece. It has three axel connection pieces, which can be used in many MOCmaking aspects. It is an interesting piece, and I can't wait to get more.

Also, during the piece count, I made a mistake. I said there were three friction adders and two simple socket connecters. There are actually six friction adders, and three socket connectors.

Those are the parts, now lets look at what those parts form;

Here he is, Furno XL! There is one thing which confuses me though; If all the villains are regular sized, then why do they need a super powerful XL character? Yes, I know that there will be a titan villain coming out in the summer, but if I'm correct, Rocka gets an upgrade to take care of THAT problem. So what's the point in Furno XL?

Despite that, it's still a very good set. With the large chest which sticks out a lot, it's a good set. With the way that the chest sticks out a lot, and the arms are set back really far, it actually looks pretty nice. I thought it would look bad, but it looks pretty cool, in my opinion.

The only slight problem is that the neck area is exposed a lot, but the technic piece helps to make it blend in well.

The legs are... simplistic. They do not have any special design to them, and the only thing that keeps them up are the friction adders. Even then, the the legs are a little springy, and could fall over when they become worn in. The good thing is that the colours are nice, and work well together. It also looks pretty nice from the direct front.

The head on this guy also looks pretty nice. It reminds me of Furno 3.0, with the colours, and the nazal shape, which kind of reminds me of a beak. It's also evident that the print is supposed to be a reminissant of a fairytale knight, with the cape, the weapons and the print on the vizor. I think it suits Furno well.

The mask underneath tells a different story. The small, beedy eyes, along with the flat wide nazal area, along with the derpy smile makes him look a little foolish. It's not a face belonging to a strong and confidant leader, if you know what I mean.

The way the arms are attached is nice. But I the problem is that it doesn't sit very confortably. If a child is playing with it, and playing with it violently, then I can easily imagine the pieces actually snapping off, in a way that it won't come back on. This is obviously a bad thing for small children, and it should really be more stable.

The sword on this guy is nice. It's an apropriate size; it's not too big, or too small. When I saw that armour was attached to the hilt, I thought it would rotate around a lot, as it would. It does do this, but it's not as easy to do it, say, you couldn't move it by accident. Yes, it looks a little incomplete with the massive gaping hole in the middle, but I still think it looks good. I am happy about it.

I'm not entirely sure how to react to the shoulder armour. I want to hate it, because it is a lazy and unstable connection point, but it actually looks pretty nice. It works with the set this time around, but I would not reccomend MOCcists to use this in their designs.

Yes, I know I built the shield wrong. You don't need to go mental about it.

It is a nice mold, and it goes together nice and simply. I like how the H design works. But as I was looking at this, I was just thinking about how commercial the Heroes are. In a couple of years, I bet Hero Factory will get sponsers, and The Heroes will have things like "Coca Cola" and "McDonalds" written on their armour.

Overall, I like this guy. Yes, he has his flaws, but I feel that he is nice and beefy, with some interesting weapons. I like the colour scheme a lot, it gives off a bright feel that a Hero should have. As I said before, the colours remind me a lot of Furno 3.0

Sorry for the delay, I had some personal issues to sort out before I could post this. I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
Here are Furno's results;

Toy Value: 2/5

Design Value: 4/5

Moccist Value: 4/5

Overall Value: 10/15

See ya next time with Ogrum!

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate . Yeah, I know what you mean. The Inika builds (and onwards)were not terrible, i guess we just didn't see much change after that. No differentiation in the pieces. I was disappointed (somewhat) with he return of the Toa Nuva. That could have been done better. We should make a group for this sort of conversation, it would be much easier than this back and forth commenting.
Can't argue with that. And yeah, we should do, we might be putting people off (sorry for the late reply, forgot about this :P)

Yeah, that was cool. The Reboot could possibly happen, but if it did, it would possibly re-ignite the BBB campaigns, which would be depressing :p Also, I didn't actually mind the 2006 onwards builds myself. I understand that "Inika Pieces" in MOCs is seen as lazy by some, and I know people didn't appreciate the repetition, but I have nothing against the "Inika pieces" as separate pieces, or sets that used them. However, that's just my opinion.

I know what you mean with the whole "Bionicle would not look good in HF style." I feel the same. What I would love to see happen, though I doubt it will, is for Bionicle to just totally reboot, with no changes to the original sets. In fact, if they did reboot it, they could build better Inika that were actually intricate and cool. Oh, and I love the Bohrok as well. They were by far the most scary of the villains in the entire series. The Rahi were just better sets, in terms of uniqueness and parts. I also loved the whole style and feel of the 2001 line of Bionicle. Almost all of the promotional videos and posters were set in sunny deserts or lush rain forests, which really reminded me of Australia (my home). And the whole era had such an upbeat feel. I don't know if I can explain it, but it just generated a great atmosphere. The villains weren't savage and intelligent humanoids, they were just beasts. The heroes weren't clad in gleaming armour, they were just tall and powerful versions of the matoran. It all just worked. The mystery and intrigue too, was generated well. No, no other era of any other theme ever captured my imagination like the 2001 era of Bionicle. It hooked a generation, and Hero Factory can never do that.

I think that's a good idea about the company talking to TFOLs, because that is also a big part of the Lego Fanbase. I agree with what you said about the TV programme too... However, I don't think Bionicle should return. It's best days are gone, and it could only get worse in quality from then on, and Lego obviously want to keep their new system, which is fine, but I don't think it'd look as good on Bionicle sets as they do on HF (I know according to some, that doesn't make me a "Real" Bionicle fan, but that's my opinion) But still, a storyline that is a little more original and imaginative than Hero Factory wouldn't do any damage. Also, H.G. Wells is awesome, I have to say, and personally my favorite villains were the Bohrok, even though the Rahi were pretty cool :P

My friend, the ranting has only just begun! See, the problem is that Lego is not focusing on the demographic with the money: TFOLs. TFOLs have their own money, their parents, and their relatives to buy them sets etc, where as KFOLs have only their pester power, and AFOLs tend not to buy sets, rather rant on about how old grey was just so chic, and how when they were young they wished they could build whatever it is they have no build, and buy their surplus Old Grey bricks (I could make a rude joke here, and would if this was IRL) from Bricklink. Therefor: The logical step would be for someone in Lego's PR department to get a MOCpages account, get in touch with Sean, and get everyone on the 'pages to answer a questionnaire. I highly suspect that this would prove my point (yup, getting around to the POINT now!), that TFOLs are the demographic Lego should be targeting. And what does the average TFOL want? Well, they want some good story, good Space, Bionicle back like it was "Back in the day" (2001 - 2005. Actually, best villains were the 2001 Rahi, agree?), and some parts heavy sets that are not too expensive. Less licencing, more BRICKS! And that's why Bionicle was so successful as a theme: It had the Story, the Elements, the Uniqueness, and the WOW factor. The SEW-U. See, i make acronyms! Look at most of the Bio-MOCs people make. They're parts heavy, and generally have story behind them. HF doesn't have that. You're quite right; the story is so generically vanilla that I don't even bother following it. I can predict the events: 5 man band vs big bad evil, Hero has invulnerable plot armour, hero is cocky/doubtful, plot device, good guys win. Snore! What's worse is that they don't even distribute the story in a manner that is feasibly accessible. I live in Australia and don't have pay TV (cable), therefore, no HF TV show for me! Thus, no story for me! I mean, I have some of the Knight's Kingdom BOOKS! They released books! Bionicle was nine tenths told through books, which was good! Man, a Bionicle TV show would have been epic! All the modern themes, even the licensed ones, are being marketed towards children, and it grates on me. I want Lego to market some theme to me, a TFOL. I like reading H.G Wells novels! I want good, mature story with plot TWISTS! not just plot devices! Or at least some BIG models. Like the old Model Team theme! That was good. You know, what they should do, is just wait a year or two, maybe until 2016, and then reboot Bionicle, from the start. All the mystery and wonder of the Toa Mata washing ashore on a tropical island, not knowing their full destiny, not knowing that they are already legends. That would be amazing. I cannot believe I wrote all that. if anyone reads this, cheers to you!

Quoting Reaper the Ultimate .
Well, I apreciate that the Bionicle toy line was cancelled, because it became far too complex and mature for the younger children of 2010, but Bionicle was a brilliant idea and story, and I totally agree. The thing is with the Hero Factory storyline is that it's too mainstream. For example, the main character is always a young "rookie" who either doubts his abilities or thinks he is the best guy in the world. He will go up against impossible odds and get all the glory at the end. (What was Furno and is now Rocka) It also seems as if all the villain characters are the same; the big bad guy is always an evil genious with some evil plan with a serious case of the giggles (Witch Doctor anyone?), there is always a very tough but dumb villain (Thunder/ Drilldozer/ Raw Jaw/ Jawblade/ Bruizer), along with a really screechy nasty looking character who is just really creepy. (Corroder/ Jetbug (sort of)/Toxic Reapa) And another example of HF being mainstream is in the Brain Attack episode when Breez faces down the infected Surge. They tried to do a thing with Breez actually fighting him, and do a thing at the same time where Surge's "Inner Self" fights back. They can't do both, and yet they did, because they believed that when one does a story about a possessed character, there always has to be an inner conflict. Yet they knew they should do Breez just kicking the tar out of Surge, because that's reflective of Breez's agressive manner. Yet, at the end of the day we have to remember that Lego sells toys, not write novels, (like the one I wrote in this comment :P) and we are lucky we had someone that dedicated to Bionicle. Anyway, rant over, thanks for the comment :P

I agree with Wert. The sets are useful, they've got some good parts, but it's obvious that Lego either didn't want to, or couldn't, get a decent story going. Which is sad. Over the years, Bionicle remained the only Lego created theme with a strong and consistent story that could operate independently of the sets. It could have been the plot for a series of movies or books (independent of the Lego theme). Now, I think Lego has given up on good stories. The consumer reason is, of course, that you can't get a child hooked on a story that's half over. But it's still sad to see these overly cheesy, commercialized heroes cheesily defeating weak villains. And I agree. In a few years, the Heroes will just be walking billboards. But this was a good review, well done.

Quoting Yoshimitsu Nakamura Actually, the Heroes DO have sponsorships. Energy drinks and stuff.
Really? Wow... I don't really think that was a good idea to be honest. It makes them seem less Heroic. Like, as if they aren't doing it to help people, just to get more money... well, that's what I think. I'm pretty fond of the sets, but I've never been a fan of the storyline...

Quoting Legobob [DragonMaster627] Another great review of from you ;) I agree with you on almost everything, apart from the masj. I think it is a VERY good-looking mask that looks very confident and strong, quite the opposite of what you said... :/ I just got this set today, and this is a new record for me I think; I didn't upgrade it within 1 hour of building it! In fact, I built it at about 11-ish (My school got let out really early, snow :D) and I STILL haven't changed it! I'm proud of my achievements :P (sorry about the rant XD)
Well, firstly, with the mask, I think that it looks good with the vizor down, but with it up, I think that it doesn't look very cool. Also, congratulations with the Furno thing! He is a great set. Finally, I got let out because of snow as well! although my school was one of the last to go... :P
