Hi Everyone.
About this creation
Here is my entry for the two Davids’ The Classic Space Pocket Money Contest.

I have always thought that the Classic Space theme was inspired by the Space Race between the Americans and Russians during the 60s and 70s. I have used this theory and added my own twist on it. Why stop racing when you have reached space? - There are precious minerals at stake.

Each of these models use all 100 pieces.

Model 1 – Classic Space Pod Racer. It is crucial to make a discovery before those pesky Blacktron guys do. What better way to reach your destination first than in your very own Classic Space Pod Racer.

Model 2 – Classic Space Formula Moon Racer. So you have reached your destination and you need to race around collecting samples and recording information. This Formula Moon Racer is inspired by the F1 cars of the 1950s. Also features a communication station.

Model 3 – Classic Space Hopper. You need to get to those hard to reach places so a combined Space Hopper and Moon Buggy is also needed. The Buggy slides out of the Hopper once it has landed. Also features a communication station.

Bonus Model. This model was built by my 6 year old son. Even though he has never seen a Classic Space set he has captured the spirit of the original theme very well. This is my favourite of the bunch.

The 100 pieces

A big thank you to the two Davids for putting on this fantastic contest and resurrecting one of the best Lego themes ever. :D

Good luck to all the contestants.

@ David and David – Thank you so much for the detailed and thoughtful feedback. I really appreciate your comments especially as there were so many for you to comment on. For me this ‘contest’ was all about nostalgic fun and wanting to be part of brilliant idea. We all know that we can’t argue with inspiration, and even though I knew that some of my models would not be pure CS I really wanted to build them. I really had fun with these builds and I suspect that was your evil plan all along ;)

A sort of Star Wars/CS fusion flyer. It certainly looks fast! I see that a pipe underneath has been ripped off in some speedy flying and has had to be replaced. I’m not sure how the engines work: will those two little red dots really fire you at high-speed across the galaxy? I like the various wings and stabiliser fins, with all of their angles, pus the two thrusters underneath for a safe landing. 9 A brilliant buggy for alternative number one. The thrusters on the side could be handy for sudden sideways moves to avoid craters. Alternative number two is very Classic Space, with its slot together format: great play options there. I also like the fold-up engines on the third alternative build. All of them look quite strong and fun for playing with! 8 Strong and swooshable, this MOC looks as thought it would survive the odd crash landing onto the kitchen table. I like the use of the tyres and red dishes at the front to make the pod thingies. It would been great to have had a moving feature to play with, such as an opening cockpit or fold out radar dish. 7 A very different shape of ship to the original CS sets, I like how the design sticks to the CS colours and includes the black & yellow stripes in an unusual way. 9 Total score 33.

Design: The space racer is a cool build and an off-beat CS theme. I do agree CS is all about the 60s and 70s space programme, so appreciate the context. I just wish your alternative model 3 was presented as the main build as for me it is the best designed of all your creations here. 8.5 Piece Selection: The splitting function on the third alternative pushes it into the excellent category for me. Adding the tyres into the main build was certainly a clever idea and opened up a lot of alternative possibilities. 9 Playability: Racing is fun, but ultimately this is simply a very very good swoosher. 8 CS Factor: Plenty of thought on show as to what makes CS, CS. Good stuff. 8.5

It's amazing what the right people can do with 100 pieces. I agree with what Tim said - the Space Hopper is my favourite.

Man, this is some great work, Joe. I love the look of each model, but my favorite is the hopper. Love how the buggy slides out. Brilliant touch, yet exactly what I would expect from you. And it looks like you have a talented little builder coming up. Watch out, or he'll be giving you advice before you know it;) Great work, as always, Joe and good luck in the contest.

The pod racer wins this one for me! Lovely ideas for all of them though. I must say that the attitude that these were built with gives them a bit of life and makes that emotionless smile that those spacemen wear a bit more lively. :)

Hahaha! Blacktron got all the cool stuff, these poor CS guys never stood a chance. But they still can’t stop smiling.
