For my second Upload I decided to go with a decepticon, this one being Shrapnel of the decepticon faction known as the 'Insecticons'
p.s the pictures have been a bit squashed so for the proper dimensions enlarge the image :)
About this creation
I tried to make this model as faithful to the g1 design as possible and as can be seen the main difference is the use of blue pieces instead of purple simply for the reason that I don't have a large collection of purple pieces which is a shame because I really liked the insecticon colour scheme.
I mainly used technic and bionicle pieces which as I've mention in my swoop post are perfect for transformer projects, especially if you want them to actually transform. For the hands I used a now common technique of using those robot arm pieces as the fingers. I first saw this technique in the Exo-Force lego set run, particularly in the sentai fortress set which I bought and I though that was such a cool and ingenious use of the pieces and new I'd be using it someday!
I had some trouble deciding what bionicle blades to use for the mandibles because I have so many! I think the ones I settles on work best and are the right colour.
I really enjoyed coming up with alt mode for shrapnel and generally with animal transformers I tend to favour their animal alt mode, Shrapnel's was no exception. Bugs are awesome and these were robot bugs! I think shrapnel is my favourite of the three because he was a tough little stag beetle with electricity powers and I liked how his mandibles doubled as little pylons.
I was originally going to use the bug legs that came with the insectoid sets from a while back but I felt those were to stiff and would make him practically un-poseable in bug mode so I went with two types of bionicle limbs which seem to do the trick and help create a nice silhouette for shrapnel when in robot mode.
When I get the pieces I hope to make the rest of the insecticons as I'm sure Shrapnel will start getting lonely! and hopefully I can look into getting the pieces in purple which would be sweet!
