2012: A Year in Mocs

As per tradition, I have compiled major events that have happened throughout the course of each month of the year. Bear in mind that what has been included in this post is not all that happened, but only what was the easiest to recreate, relatively speaking. 2012 seemed to be a year marred with an abnormally high amount of tragedies and lives lost, so I hope that 2013 will bring out the better parts of our society. With that said, I give you 2012: A Year in Mocs. Enjoy.
About this creation

January 13: The cruise ship 'Costa Concordia' goes down off the coast of Italy near the island of Giglio. The death toll remains at roughly 32 people, and for many, the blame for the sinking is on the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino.

Feb. 9: After a reviewing process that lasted over a year, the Pentagon approves of permanent positions for women in battalions. While there are women already serving overseas in battalion positions, the Pentagon ruling only serves to make such assignments official.

March 4: Vladimir Putin wins the Russian presidential election, claiming 64% of the vote. Protests erupt and accusations of fraud are made, citing that there was no competition and that government funds were at Putin's disposal.

April 14: 11 Agents of the US Secret Service are fired for misconduct in Colombia, with accusations of deals with prostitutes being a major the part of the offenses.

May 17: Facebook opens up it's shares to the public, making it a public company. The initial offering of $38 shares is well received, but soon after when the price is upped to $42.05, sales dwindle, and the shares close at $38.23, making the move an overall disappointing one.

June: Wildfires spread throughout New Mexico and Colorado, devastating forests and causing the evacuation of thousands of people.

July: The summer Olympics are held in London, England. The United States comes out on top of the games, with a medal count of:
Gold-46
Silver-29
Bronze-29
American swimmer Michael Phelps also claimed his 22nd medal, making him the most decorated athlete of the games.

- It should also be noted that on July 20, a gunman opened fire in a crowded movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 and injuring 58 moviegoers during a screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises'

August 6: NASA successfully lands the rover 'curiosity' on the surface of Mars. It's mission is largely to examine the conditions of the planet, and to collect and record the data for analysis back home.

September 11: Gunmen storm the US embassy in Libya, killing ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other officials. Steven is the first ambassador since 1979 to have been killed in the line of duty. The attack is said to have coincided with the Muslim-criticizing film 'Innocence of Muslims', which had set off riots and protests throughout parts of the Middle East.

Late October: Hurricane Sandy makes landfall on the United States' Eastern coast, causing millions of people to lose power, at least 100 people to lose their lives, and at least $30 billion in damages. The storm is put on record as being the second costliest storm since Katrina back in 2004.

November 6: President Barack Obama wins re-election in the United States, defeating challenger Mitt Romney and becoming the 44th President.

December 21: As was portrayed in the 2009 film '2012', the end of the world was supposed to happen on December 21st, 2012. No such thing occurred, but no doubt were there people scrambling to buy disaster supplies beforehand.

Another note: On December 14, a total of 26 people -mostly school children- are killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I chose not to recreate this event for a mix of reasons, mainly as I could not figure out how I would represent such an immense tragedy without it being offensive to others. I hope you respectfully acknowledge that decision, as well as take pause to reflect on all that you have in your lives. Each one of you out there is incredibly lucky to have your whole lives ahead of you, and I pray that you all make the most out of what you have in as productive of a way as you possibly can.

Eagerly awaiting the 2013 installment of your "Year in MOCs" series -- one of the most creative ideas I've seen on MOCpages. Beautifully illustrated with insightful, well-written reportage way beyond your years (presumably 19 now).

Completely first rate all around. Great recrap (yep, intentional misspelling) of a crappy year, with the exception of the Olympics and the Amy Pond saga on Dr. Who. Didn't care too much for Gangam Style either, but hey, you can't complain about what you've done here!

This recap was great! The month of February brought to mind a certain joke having to do with monthly occurances & combative attitude... don't pay any attention to my mind! Anyhoo, good stuff here! Thanks! :)

Nice year in review! Some great scenes in there! Just a note, President Obama is still the 44th, that didn't change with the election.
