Cranes R Us
...In which one of my occasional obsessions gets out of hand...
About this creation

So, there I was, tinkering with the mechanisms of the big yellow mobile crane I made a while ago, and thinking about how to get them all in a smaller package.... and I didn't stop.

This red beastie is 14 studs wide (the yellow one is 20) and features progressive rate steering on all 5 of it's axles, controllable from the cab or the H.O.G. at the back, a three piece boom that extends from a single control, the boom swivels and lifts, and it has 4 stabilisers that are linked to a single control. It does everything the big 'un manages except that it doesn't have an engine.

Those gears on the back control the steering and activate the stabilisers.

Here it is doing it's funky (?) thing...

It's quite tall when extended - 4 feet or so...

Which is only a little less than old yeller (it's previously quoted 7ft height is with the two-piece extension attached).

That long bit of chain wraps around the middle part of the boom to transmit the input to the top part. They both extend at once from the same control wheel.

In order to qualify for Cranes R Us, each crane must lift it's smaller brother... hey, I don't make the rules... wait, what ?

And here's the little brother, 8 studs wide, progressive rate steering on 3 axles; HOG controlled, swivelling, lifting and extending 2-piece boom and simple pull-out-and-fold-down stabilisers.

Classic space man approves, but he's easy to please...

Very nice, but there's nothing to lift!

Oh yes there is! Blue makes it's bid for Cranes R Us. Success!

A little yellow 4 wide. Features getting basic now... It does swivel, lift and extend the boom, but only manually, as it were; the difference between a working feature, and just a feature. It does feature the working feature of a control to raise and lower the hook, though, same as the others.

There's fold out stabilisers in the sides that you, er.. fold out.

See ? It lifts things, too. Little things. Passes the test!

2 studs wide. The boom lifts, and promptly flops down again. Cute, though.

Some stacking silliness...

I blame this for starting it all in 1978. Set no. 855...

... which does all the blue one does, except steer. Here they have a... lift off ?
Both of their booms are raised and extended to the maximum. Blue wins, by a whisker.

Another crane. A space crane. It's like a crane, but in space!

It does well, until you let go of the simply hinged boom... Fail. Spaceman's head hurts. Bet he's still smiling, though.

Happy New Year from all at Cranes R Us!

Coming soon.... the Citroen 2cv in 5 sizes. Or some therapy.

WHen I think about my morning's comment about your cranes... Ha ha! I did not know I was so right! Anyway, that is a stunning idea, just like Russian dolls... I don't know anyone on Mocpages building booms as you do. The 16studs wide one is just impressive. A three feet height-value job...

...Well with your great skills i think the doc should prescribe - BUILDING THERAPY! That way, we all get to enjoy the fruits of your healing process :-D Nice idea actually, It's clear you have been working hard to add as much working details as possible with the progressively smaller builds :-) Could be a nice competition idea too - 'build this in 5 sizes'

I love the red crane. With all of its steering wheels, brick-built black & yellow stripes and multiple extending sections it's the sort of thing that I would have loved to have built in my Technic teens of the eighties.

I am always happy like a child when I see that you've done something new, man. I can't force myself to do something in old style with old style LEGOs (Those old cute red wheels with a stud always remind me of my childhood!) but I am always very glad to see those creations especially yours because you really wield them so well. These beauties are just the proof of that. Love those cranes!

Nick, I love the fact you keep going for new and original MOC's! This once again showcases your ability to astonish the viewer, and I love that old 4 wheel crane from the 70's, never had it, always wanted it, good to see it in action once again! Z

lol, happy new year nick! my fav is the big blue space classic, it s awesome with the logo and figs, but, any of those are real cool, exept maybe for the last one, all must have a good feel to operate, 78 gives you lots of experience to make them run real smooth, I remember my old technics set s creations with gears, the feel was hot to operate. well done nick!

Quoting Tom Simon OK, I'm trying to keep up here: bigger is better, smaller is bigger, and ... What am I missing? There is one error. Each crane should qualify by lifting the next larger size. Think about it. (the smallest one can be carried off by a couple ants in your backyard, and you can use the largest to jack up your car at your next flat tire.)
Good job I've got a really light car... :-) Thanks Tom.

Quoting Senator Chinchilla . I'll only be impressed once the big yellow crane lifts the big red one. Okay, so maybe I'm a bit impressed already. Just a bit. A big bit. Okay I admit it, this is brilliant. So many functions and so many cranes. And all those gear racks! Where do you get all of these technic bits??? The progressive steering is pretty cool, too. And the cranes lifting the cranes (lifting the cranes). And of course the Classic Spaceman is pleased, look what he's driving! Of course it has nothing to do with his printed face. =)
Hee, hee... well now, I haven't tried lifting the red one with the big yellow one, but I just might. Big yella's very strong... and yes, there are a LOT of 1x4 gear racks in this post. And chain links. And wheels, gears, beams...

What a fun moc! They're all brilliant in their own way, the huge yellow one is obviously the most impressive (7ft?!), the minifig scale one looks very playable, and the four wide one is very cool too. Then there's just the cute little one ;) Love them all, great job!

Another fantastic crane from you Nick, I especially love the frontend design and the low stance of the whole thing. 5 axles, and all of them steered, and a three piece boom - very impressive! That "Town Musicians of Bremen" pic with all the cranes (or is there a different iconography for something like that in Britain?) is great! Happy New Year!
