About this creation
For Christmas this year I wanted to do something different and special. I tried to develop some wacky new techniques and here is the cartoon-styled result! I present Grandpa Joe. This character is named in honor my own grandfather who passed away (around Christmas time) several years ago.

I also found a passage from an old recording of The Walton's Christmas that's rather dear. It seemed fitting for the MOC. Grandpa Walton talks about the wonders of the season. This is an excerpt from Grandpa's Christmas Message:

What is Christmas? It is a time when some of your dreams come true. Every year it roles around and takes you by surprise some of the time, especially when youíre as close to a 100 years old as I am. You think...it Canít be time for another one, but there it is with all itís hope and joy and the promise of the wishes granted. I bet you wonder what I wish for. What could an old man wish for? Maybe you think I would wish to be young again. I donít want that. Being young is a painful thing. Being young and in love to boot, which most young people are, is even more agony. Iíll tell you what I wish. Iíd wish for the power to return some of the love thatís been given me. Iíd wish the time and place for all that giving could be commemorated like the heart I carved on the tree around your Grandmotherís and my initials. I wish too for more days to my life. Time...time to give to children some of the beauty of this Earth that has been revealed to me. A drop of water is a wondrous thing. ~Grandpa Walton

And of course it's not Christmas without Gollum! Yup, that's the Gollum figure hiding in there. The entire creation was built around this head design.

My good friend Lee Muzzy pointed out that the grandpa's head bears striking resemblance to that of Sebulba's, the notorious pod racer from Star Wars Episode I.

On the subject of pod-racing I'd also like to give a little shout-out to my brilliant friend Max Pointner. His Santa's Pod Racer is one of my favorite Christmas MOCs this year.

Though built quickly in comparison to the grandfather and the Christmas tree, I'm quite pleased with how the recliner turned out.

The techniques:

Breaking news: The recliner reclines...and spins! No wonder I thought it "turned" out well. Ha...ha...okay I'm sorry, I really am.

Christmas tree anatomy!

Legs within legs. The droid-head/finger technique I can't take credit for. I first saw it used by my good friend Max Pointner in this post.

And a parting shot of the entire build!

Thanks for stopping by and Soli Deo Gloria! Lest we forget the true meaning of the holiday. :)

Merry Christmas!

Brilliance. Sheer brilliance. That PU is the best I've EVER seen on MOCpages Ian. Oh, and a funny thing: that comment you put on all us round two-ers that said we made it? The comment on mine pushed it up to my most popular creation XD.

Quoting LukeSC Overlord He does look like sebulba. Are you planning on joining the mocathalon this year? It would be great to have you on my team. If you can't, or would rather join a different team, that's just fine too. Still, great moc!
I'm not currently planning on playing in the MA, but if I do, there are some others I'll have to check in with first. Thanks for thinking of me though, and for the comment!

Thank you Ben! Haha, I totally had that same "Leg Inception" thought whilst I was working on the write-up. I guess great minds think alike, eh? ;) Hopefully I'll be able to keep branching out in this direction, but the build felt kind of like an out-of-the-blue lucky find, as it were. We'll see! But no matter, I'm just rambling now. Thanks again for the encouraging words my friend and a Merry Christmas to you too!

So many new and great techniques in here, Ian! The legs within legs (Leg Inception!), the christmas tree, the recliner, and probably the most brilliant: the gollum-head technique. I have no idea how you came up with that idea but it worked splendidly! The hairs on gollums head made a great 'stache. And the quote was truly amazing, not to mention that fact that this is named after your grandpa, that is very kind of you. Overall really awesome build! The animated cartoon ish feel in this reminds me somewhat of some of Riccardo Z.'s works. I hope to see more of these in the future!

I think the fact that you experiment with techniques is great. Not enough people are reaching for a better build these days, they rely on special minifigs and pieces to make the build, or simply resort to stacking blocks to get the build. This is fantastic! Z
