My Final Round entry into the 2012 MIT!

My opponent Justin Knelsen’s fantastic entry!

Pimp My LEGO Set! LEGO set designers are hampered by piece counts and element restrictions when developing their designs, but you are being given free reign! Choose any Official LEGO set and give it the Advanced Builder treatment. Don't completely reimagine the set, just make it better.
Man, was this an awesome category, or what? I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion to this awesome competition, and I’m so glad to have Justin Knelsen up here with me battling it out in the end. Not only is he an extraordinary builder, but also a humble and kind competitor.
And now, on to the “pimped-out” build!
Set: 6273 Rock Island Refuge
Theme: Pirates
Year: 1991
For reference, here is a link to pictures of the original.

Hidden somewhere in the Caribbean, the pirates have built a secret fort to stash all of the treasure they looted from the Royal Governor. Rock Island Refuge is the island where these buccaneers have established their operations.

But, OH NO! The Royal troops have discovered the secret location of the island, and are beginning an attack to arrest the outlaws in the name of the crown!

The first-mate boards his rickety raft. Doesn't look like he will make it far with those ripped sails...

This pirate inspects the cargo on the dock from their last raid in Port Royal.

Another pirate watches on from the rocky path to the fort as the first-mate wobbles out to sea in the raft.

The island is full of tropical plants and foliage, including this palm tree.

"Put yer back into it, lad!"
"Please, sir. Can we stop to rest?"

The pirates scared the soldiers away with their menacing cannons on the dock. Those cannonballs will be used on the fleeing boat.

The pirate Captain's private collection of fine rum.

Supplies and crates with gunpowder and other weapons. The nearby jail cell is used for captured Royal soldiers... as well as mutinous crew members...

The crane helps load treasure down to the docks.

The window of the jail cell.

Those bridges don't look very safe...

The updated Crew. I tried to stay as true to the orginal figs as I could, but with updated torsos, pieces, etc...

The Soldiers. Again, true to the original.

The Raft.
Behind the Bricks
First, I’d like to give a huge, huge, huge thanks to the judges in both the MIT and MOCOlympics for giving their time in making this event a success! Without them, where would all the fun be, huh?
Personally, I am very proud of my accomplishments over the course of the festivities. I feel I have established a strong building style that I hope to utilize in my future builds outside of the competition. Everybody here on MOCpages has been extremely supportive of each other.
As I built this last build, I knew going in to the Final Round that I wanted to pay homage to my original Round 1 entry (of the MOCOlympics, that is) that was “pirate” themed. By looking back on all the great Pirates sets of the past, the Rock Island Refuge set really stood out as a quality playset that could best be translated with new techniques and pieces. Definitely one of my favorite sets of all time! I purposefuly left the back "open" to keep that playset feel, a major highlight of the original set. All of the original moving parts were included, as well.
Here are some WIP pics of the base. Rather than use the baseplate in the original set, I wanted to challenge myself and rebuild the island with bricks. I've never done any "rockwork" in my builds at this scale, but I think it turned out nicely.

As I took a nostalgia trip down memory lane, I’m very pleased with my builds in this competition, as well as following along with the builds of others. You guys all rock and deserve the win!
Shout-out to Topsy Creatori for making the bracket outline for everyone to follow. It was really helpful!
Regardless of the outcome, Justin, congrats buddy! It’s been an honor facing you, and I know you will continue to amaze us!

Thanks for viewing! Ahoy!

It's a really close call, but your work brings a lot of play features and a lot of little spots ready to be discovered all around, and that makes a good set for me. You've got my vote on this. |

This is a great re-imagining of the set. I love the rock details. However, your opponent's entry really grabbed my interest more. Sorry, but my vote goes to your opponent. |

Both entries really encapsulated what I was looking for when I came up with this category. Each managed to keep the spirit of the original set while still making significant upgrades, so congrats to you both for that. As for my vote, in a VERY close call...it goes with your opponent. Good luck with the remaining judges!~H |

This is a real tough decision. You’ve chosen a great set with heaps opportunities to grow a new moc from. You’ve really got stuck in and you’ve given it a great oomph by building the base and the walls from bricks, and you’ve still managed to retain that quaint charm of the early Pirates theme. The little raft is adorable and it has lots of playability as a whole. However I have given my vote to Justin. This is really top notch work and I wish you good luck with the rest of your judges. |

Although I don't own this set, the differences are pretty clear from the main pic. I really like the rope bridge and the palm tree designs. Replacing the entire baseplate is a significant upgrade that changes the overall appearance and parts count big time. You've got my vote, and good luck with the other judges! |

Wow! What a great entry Daevster! Huge improvement over the original set I see some great details in here, such as the cannon and the palm tree. The rock work on the bottom is superb as well. I wish you luck in the contest. :) |

I gotta tell ya, this was probably the hardest round to judge for me. The category calls for an upgrade to the set and not a total makeover to have it look like a pro moccer did it, never an easy task. You did an exceptional job with this, giving just the right amount of upgrades to fit perfectly with the category... but then, so did your opponent. Really a valiant final round entry but I think your opponent beat ya out on this one. He got my vote. But as is with all these late round entries, this one could go either way so good luck with your other judges! ~ Chris. |
