About this creation

2012 MIT Group page

My worthy opponent, Eamonn J.

Category: Robot Jox: Your job is to create two robots (with pilots)in a knock down, drag out fight to the finish in gladiatorial style combat. This idea is inspired by (Read: stolen) the 1990 cult classic, Robot Jox http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Jox (man I loved that movie). Consider this a “mech” type category so no microscale please. Your arena does NOT have to be a full scale "thing" with a FULL crowd and stands and all that (that would be asking WAY too much of some collections) but some sort of “battle area” must be built.

*Please feel free to enjoy the epic Robot Jox soundtrack by Frederic Talgorn while you view this creation:

(Phew), where do I even begin with this one? Let’s just say, I had never seen (or heard of for that matter) the film Robot Jox, so this category was shaping up to be a real challenge. Not to mention, I’ve never built any “mechs” at all in my life, so I knew going into this that I would be leaving my comfort zone.

But, no worries! I’m always up for a challenge! I spent the past few days doing my research on the film by first watching it just to see it, and then rewatching it so I could pick out the best details for the build. Obviously, my build needed to include the mechs, so I took careful notes on the vehicles from the film, as well as the personalities of the characters to be made into minifigs.

The movie was certainly… interesting… but still a fun sci-fi flick to enjoy. The stop-motion used for the mechs was superb, and reminded me of the AT-AT stop-motion from Star Wars V.

Backstory: After a nuclear holocaust, the super-nations of the Western Market and the Confederation ban open warfare, and instead settle disputes through gladiatorial robot matches, fought by Robot Jox. The film follows, Achilles, one of the greatest Robot Jox, as he faces off against his evil nemesis, Alexander.

Sportscaster: And there he is! Achilles, hero of the Western Market, winner of 9 straight fights, trying to become the only man besides legendary Tex Conway to win all 10 compulsory fights. He’s fighting today for the territory of Alaska, rich in mineral wealth, oil, lumber, and other precious natural resources.
Achilles’s robot—the new Matsumoto 14, facing off against Alexander of the Confederation. Listen to that crowd!

The eager crowd watches the battle unfold. Many make (or lose) profits on the betting machines installed near the stands.

The referees monitor the battle, and have the ability to shut down the mechs’ long-range systems (missiles, cannons, lasers, etc…), leaving the fight man to man, or robot to robot.

And now, on to the characters…

Achilles, the protagonist. “You're making my beer curdle.”

Alexander, the antagonist. “And you make my drink taste like blood.”

Tex Conway, Achilles’s strategist and the only Robot Jox in history to have won all 10 of his fights. Watch out for this guy…

Doc. Matsumoto, the robot designer and keeper of the secret weapons.

Commissioner Jameson, of the Western Market

Professor Laplace, the scientist behind the development of genetically engineered “gen jox” fighters.

Athena, the “gen jox” selected to fight Alexander after Achilles retires.

And, how could I get away without a picture of this memorable scene? During the first battle, Achilles sacrifices himself to block an on-coming missile from hitting the spectators stands. Instead, this move backfires, and Achilles’s robot is launched into the crowd, killing almost everybody. This part of the movie gave me nightmares, so I’ll avoid the minifig close-ups of the gore.

As usual, hope you enjoyed the build! Best of luck to Eamonn J. and thanks again to the judges for organizing this contest! Also, congrats to everyone else in the top 4!

Crash and burn!

THis one is a very close call, but I feel you did just enough to edge your opponent on this one, so you get my vote. Good luck with the remaining judges!~H

Quoting M<0><0>DSWIM ! I agree that some more detail pics of the mechs would be nice. However, I like the design of your builds better than your opponent's. You've got my vote!
Thank you! That means a lot coming from a mech-builder like yourself ;)

Quoting El Barto ! Great job on that main pic! But I have to say, though, too many pics of the figs, not enough of the Robots. It's really difficult to judge without seeing enough close up detail, so my vote has to go to your opponent. Good luck with the other judges!
Thanks for the input! I included the figs, betting-station in the crowds, referee platform, the burned-off robot arm (can be seen on the black robot) and other crowd details hoping that the judges had seen the movie and could acknowledge the accuracy to the film in which the category was based on, hopefully giving me some bonus points, however I agree with you that more close-up pics could have helped, especially in the intricate designs of the robots. Thanks again for the review :)

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= I agree with El Barto, that it needs a bit closer attention paid to the robots and the work gone into building them, also I would have liked to see a Lego surface for them to fight on instead of a photo-shopped background, although the effect is well done. The robots are very good and that title poster pic is truly legendary. Good luck with your other judges but my vote goes to your opponent.
Thank you very much for your kind words! More pictures of the robots seems to be a common reoccuring theme among the judges so far, so I'll definately take that advice :)
