About this creation
George G. vs Nick Barret in the 2012 MOCOlympics category:
A Bug's Life: show us life from the perspective of an insect like a fly or ant: giant blades of grass and stones or indoor stuff like food scraps n the kitchen. What would these look like to an tiny creature?
For this category, I contemplated doing a scene much like Nick's one, but I then decided I would try and interpret the category a little differently by making it not so we see exactly what the insects are looking at, but how they interpret the world around them. This may make a little more sense once you look at the MOC....

"Hello friends, my name is Sidney Spider, welcome to my home!"

"Come on inside, it's lovely, warm and moist in here..."

"This is our cloakroom, a place to hang up our shedded skins."

"This here is our living space, where we like to sit down and look at our spider art. And over there is our kitchen where my wife, Sabrina Spider, is cooking the family our dinner."

"We've left an opening at the back of our house so that when our 20 children get a little bigger, we can extend back!"

"Here is the nursery where our children sleep and feed off of eachother..."

"We have a little basin here where we wash down tiny model humans, just to see how they like it!"

"Our bed is wonderful, but the last thing I have to show you is most spectacular..."

"The view!"
____________________________________________

That's right folks, I did make a 5x scale model of the ear, the eye and most of the things in between. And boy was it difficult, the angles were horrible and I warn you now, I wouldn't try making them yourselves.
The idea came from the program Monsters Inside Me, where quite often spiders or flies crawl into your ears whilst you're sleeping, lay their eggs inside your head and the babies will hatch and come out again, in one case: somebody's eyes!

I wanted to try and make it as anatomical as I could, but it sort of turned out rather cartoonish! Here we can see the temporal bone and the eardrum.

Along the top are the semicircular canal and the cochlea.

If you were wondering what the thing at the back of the eye was then I shall tell you now, it's the retina - and the image on it at the moment is my face, upside down of course due to the lens (which I removed for this shot).

And finally here's the ear. I'm too happy with the result, but I am happy I stuck out with it and tried to make my dream a reality!
Good luck Nick, and I hope all of you sleep well tonight, because you're not going to stop thinking about spiders crawling into your ears..... ;)

Man, to be able to build an eye and ear with that much complexity and still have the juice to create a stunning interior... My hat comes off to you, George! |

Thanks for a sleepness night, along with a nightmare. (Not really, but I had to pick at my ears a few times... Along with twitch my eyes a bit... Eeehh!) The angles are all amazing and look exactly like you explained them COMPLEX! Great job, and congrats! (Sorry for the late comment, BTW) |

Great combination of icky and cartoon-y! The amount of effort you must have put in to get those shapes... I was wondering what the retinal image was for, thanks for the explanation, and good luck in round 5! |

Congrats on advancing George! Sorry for the late comment but I think this is genius stuff, right up my street in terms of humour and take on the category. I'm not going to worry about spiders crawling in my ears tonight though as they'll have to fight for space with the parasitic worms ;) Well done young man, go Team GB! |

Simply brilliant. It is a pitty that you used the last image as your first/preview image, otherwise, the surprise would have been much greater. The icing on the cake is your image upside down in the retina. Really great work. And less disturbing than Simon Peggs last movie. |

You definitely missed out if you didn't go all the way to the end. As I was looking through it, I really thought Nick had won, but the ending is a nice surprise. It will be interesting to see how the judges "see" it. Great building, nonetheless. |
