My Round 4 entry into the MOC Olympics.
About this creation
Heath Flor vs Ian Spacek
Mosaics: Were going to leave this one open a bit. We want you to paint an ORIGINAL piece of art using Lego. 2D only please.

After trying to come up with a concept for days now, and then getting slammed with 2 reviews, dealing with 4 kids, and a job....I came up with this amazing design!
Here it is in all its glory:

I call it "Walk Like An Egyptian".

Obviously this was off to a bad start, so after a few days of mulling around on it I decided to try my hand at a free-hand mosaic. This lighthouse is purely from my mind, with no picture references, computer programs, or drawings. It didn't turn out too bad.

From there I decided it wasn't going too bad, so I went ahead and did a likeness of Lord Vampyre. This is more for my daughter Kairi who absolutely adores him, and probably will be hung up in her room.

Next I decided to try the ol' computer program trick on an existing photo. This is of my awesome Victorian Bulldog sleeping. He's sooooo cute! When he's sleeping that is. :P My wife really likes this one, and won't let me tear it down so it will go to her.

Here is the real photo.

Finally, Leda said I should just smash the Cathedral flat. I had already thought of doing that, but didn't feel very confident about it. After confirming with Chris it would be ok, I went for it. I'm really proud of this one, because it was almost entirely done by free-hand -- except for the bottom, where I needed the base to be exact. I used the tan to break up the white a bit, and distinguish the cathedral from the background.
You can find the build of Smolny Cathedral HERE

Afterthoughts --
Well there ya go. I don't like mosaics, and I'll probably never do one again. That's what I say every time I get stuck with this category, so you see how much say I really have. LMAO Actually the kids really enjoyed waking up every morning to find a new Mosaic, and I have several requests from them and my wife to do others. We'll see.
Anywho, it was fun to test my skills and watch them improve with every build. Good luck to my competitor who is an excellent builder, and all around good guy. Cheers!

Awesome, unfortunately this is coming from someone who's primarily a biomocist, but I am a pretty good artist with that being said you should have thought about shading, a vantage point, and horizon. |

All these "paintings" or should i say "Brickings" are truely worty to an Art Gallery. (this is not to offend your sundown/sunrise, in your lighthouse painting. But i think it looks like a explosion)
Besides from that, i think your bulldog painting is the best. Specialy compared to the real thing |

Hey Heath (yep, editing Ian strikes again, but I think it's due), thank you for helping me to understand your vantage point in regards to the "sneak-attack" aspect (your comment in the thread was enlightening). I doubt I would've considered it in that way if you hadn't said something; I was obviously viewing the situation from a very different angle. I think both views are justifiable, and hope (from the description in my big comment) that you can understand why I reacted the way I did. Once again, congrats on the win and good luck in the rounds to come. |

Congrats on getting through mate, I know you had time concerns so i'm pleased you submitted a good entry. I thought from the main picture it was apparent that the cathedral was your 'proper' entry and everything else was practice/ progression up to that point but I can see from comments some people have interpreted it differently. Sorry your success is being mired by this but well done and good luck for next round. |

In reading over the comments, I thought it was really interesting what you did, not only your "deception" but also Ian's apparent over-confidence. I won't voice my thoughts either way, but I will say congrats on getting through. |

Really great builds, and, while I am judging the best one, I'm also looking at the others. The one thing that your opponent's mosaic has that yours do not is a good appearance of depth through shading. My vote goes to Ian. |

Yay you did the cathedral! Its awesome and if you keep it made up and hang it on the wall it will be a nice keepsake of that project since it is now no longer. Lots of great stuff here Heath, the dog is cute, I love its pink nose. Good luck!
You think he's cute here, you should see him in person .....he's a hottie! He must get it from his owner. ;) |

Okay, now that I'm done moping--you really got my hopes up with that first entry--I'll try and leave a half decent comment. ;) Some great mosaics here Heath, you really took everyone by surprise! The 3D appearance of the cathedral is just stunning. Heh, I also considered "mosaicafying" one of my own MOCs, but it wouldn't have been half as cool as this! I'm really liking the cartoony vampire too. What fun! It's also been a riot having a rematch! Of course it'd be pleasant to win (even the score a bit), but I won't be surprised if you pull through again. :) Whatever the outcome, it's been an honor! Hehe, seems Thoy enjoyed it too. What can I say? My over-earnestness is quite laughable. ;) Well, good luck mate (not that you'll really need it). You do them pirates proud! ;) |

Multiple mosaics...the category did seem to hint at only piece, because which one will you be judged on? It's hard to compare 5 very different mosaics (including "Walk like an Egyptian") to my 1. Nice work all the same.
LOL maybe they'll just judge the best one. ;) If there's an issue, they know where to find me.

Am I the only one who noticed Heath hasn't added it to group yet? I love a good conspiracy, maybe this is a hoax, and later Heath will upload his real build. The link on Ians entry would be deemed incorrect and as such Ian would be DQed LOL! This is a great little build mate, we all know the feeling of defeat when time just doesn't go our way so I can really feel for ya there. Good luck and I hope for our R5 match that my little theory is true ;) ~Thoy |
