MocOlympics round 4, Mark of Falworth vs Max Pointner. Assault on the Underworld
About this creation
Category. "Go to H. E. Double hockey sticks: Build us what you imagine the underworld would look like. You may choose from any reference material you wish but give us your version of (a) dark lord's realm."

My worthy opponent's page.

A link to the 2012 MocOlympics.

Be SURE to check out this video, which shows many different views, angles, and live footage of the MOC.

With blinding-bright light and a thunderous crash, the gates to the fiery underworld are burst through and a heavenly force descends upon the burning, charred demons’ lair.
With sweeping wings and scintillating swords, the fighting force of Righteousness and Light attacks the flaming black masses underneath clouds of fire and a scarlet sky.

As they pour through the portal into hell, the very ground splashes into pure white under their feet.

The demons that inhabit this wretched place are driven back by the onslaught of the Righteous.

Pools of lava gush with flame from the blistered ground as the defenders of the underworld scramble to the gate.

Swords drawn, the angels rush into the midst of the worst place imaginable… bent on conquest and victory!

The head demons are not willing to concede defeat so easily, they lash out at their foes… but the underlings are far quicker to flee.

Dragons crawl through the oily black sludge and flames, hissing in fear when they behold the attacking angels.

An archdemon rushes through the searing flames.

In a world of pure evil, Good prevails!

Romans 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

FOURTH WALL COMMENTARY

Let’s see… where shall I start?

Well, the category would not be my first choice! In fact, it’d probably be the last thing I’d build besides steampunk and ma.ks. But I decided to give it my best shot and go for it, as much as I disliked the idea of having “H.e. double hockey sticks” and darkness being glorified.

However, once again, my family presented me with a brilliant idea. Have the underworld being overthrown! *light-bulb*.

Liven up the scene with some conflict and contrast! Always a good idea, in my opinion.

If I was to build HE-double hockey sticks, I decided I’d show the gates. It also provided a great opportunity for unusual lighting effects. Those transparent clouds in the backdrop are, of course, inspired by Leda Kat, my previous opponent – I try to learn from my experiences.

I’m hoping the judges are not upset by my slight twist on the category – I think everyone views things in their own original way, and this is just my example.

I was most happy with how the angels’ wings came out! I spent several hours working on those boogers. :P Then my sister gave me the key advice of having them point up instead of down… which made all the difference.

I used almost every single flame piece in my collection!

Big thanks to my family and friends for their advice and encouragement.

Also, to my opponent Max Pointer – best of luck with the judges! Have a great day! :)

Thanks for viewing, feel free to leave a comment. :D

~Mark

Great build again Mark, as you've said this was a tricky category to tackle in a positive way but you've made a good job of it. The lighting is spectacular and those poseable angel figs are brilliant, I can see future MOCs being inspired by them. Good luck in round 5!

Quoting Stuart Delahay Well done on advancing Mark. I particularly like the angel figs - the bigger scale gives you more options of the posing which has made them seem really dynamic here. The lighting on that backdrop looks really good too. Excellent work all round. It looks like it's you and me in round 5, so very best of luck to you.
Thanks Stuart! Congrats on your advance! Best of Luck to you in round 5 mate! :)
Quoting Max Pointner Congrats on the win mark! It was great being matched against you! Good luck in round 5! I'm rooting for you!
Thanks Max! It's great to be matched up against such a nice guy! :D Have a great day, man!
Quoting Paul Vermeesch While my input at this point won't make much impact, I'm going to toss my two cents in anyway. For me, this came down judging based on presentation. Mark, your build was very solid compositionally and the techniques used with both the landscape and the characters were impressive, but the feeling generated by the MOC was largely due to the way it was delivered. Max's creation, on the other hand, not only combined functionality with comedy and clever techniques, but it wasn't as reliant on lighting. Unfortunately, my vote goes to Max. That said, this was a tough one to judge, and I'll be looking forward to what you bring us in round 5!
Thanks for the comment Paul! Well, the whole build was specifically designed for atmospheric lighting effects, and from what I've seen in my Moc-ing career, presentation often wins the day in LEGO contests. :)

Quoting Chris Phipson A great take on the category! I think that combined with your presentation won you my vote! Good luck with your other judges! ~ Chris.
Thanks a bunch Chris! :D
Quoting Sebeus I fantastic representation of the underworld, the typical cartoon/movie version of the underworld perhaps but therefor instantly recognizable, your opponent had a sweet working lavastream in his entry which made this a difficult decision. In the end I decided to vote for you, good luck.
Thanks for the vote Sebeus! Yeah, that was a neat feature in his MOC. :)

Quoting Max Pointner Gulp... Great work Mark! This will be hard to beat. I have been nervous all week, and now I know that my anxiety has been well-founded. Your build has great effects, especially with the lighting. By the way, there is a hidden "n" in my last name that everyone misses. It's "PointNer." Good luck with this!
Aww.. Sorry man. Don't be nervous! Just do your best! :) Thanks! Whoops! Got it, thanks again! ;)
Quoting Matthew Oh Wow Mark!! That is just incredible! The detail is just stunning! The angels are amazing! The idea of angels coming to defeat the evil demons is so majestic! I love that you included scripture in this creation. It adds a spectacular effect to this Moc. The angel figures are very well done! I love the demons, but I have never heard of an archdemon! Although, I am still rooting for Max, this is an extraordinary creation Mark! :D
Thanks a bunch Matthew! :D I had never heard of an archdemon before either. But there could possibly be some archdemons out there. ;) Yeah, just by reading his homepage you can tell he's a great guy! :)
Quoting Ian Spacek A nice creation Mark (well...as nice as heck can be...), and the lighting is totally epic, though IMO the build relies on it a tad too much. But other than that little critique, brilliant stuff. The mini-fig designs are just incredible! I also think your use of Scripture at the end was beautiful; an excellent reminder of the truth and hope Christ has offered us. As a Christian and a Two Steps fan--what can I say? I love epic music! I actually compose a bit of it myself--you scored high in the music department! Thanks for including the video! As Max is one of my best friends in "real" life, I'll be rooting for him, but that doesn't in anyway detract from the excellence of this build. You've definitely put forth a strong entry, good luck mate! ~Ian
Thanks Ian! :D I'm very glad you liked the movie! I thought it would help set the feel of the MOC. ;)
Quoting Zabou =) Wow! Mark, this is breathtaking! That's such a good build! Like everyone here, I LOVE the lighting effects and your angels are fabulous! Best of luck with judges! Ps: My AFOL is still in the race, can you find who he is? =)

While I am not a fan of the Nonpurist pieces or illegal attachments, these really work. I think your build is briliant, and I was originally going to say, "Just in time for Halloween, how appropriate." but then I saw the twist and my view changed. I tend to forget I'm a Christian, and He// being overthrown is awesome. Your music video having that song name was pretty funny, and while viewing the MOC, I was listening to epic music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iu-WAHBbW8 and it acompanies the MOC very well. Oh, and thank you for telling me what those verses were because I keep thinking they were 22-23. I need to have that written down somewhere so I won't forget that it is 37-39. I wouldn't worry too much about the judges. They are looking for more on build than following the theme so strictly. The Underworld looks like the underworlds many envision. You'll be fine.

I am digging those Angels, they look very cool, and the wings remind me of a Diablo II/III cinematic. While the overall scene looks like it was relatively simple to put together, the lighting and photography take it and make it something exceptional! Well done and may the brick be on your side! ~Thoy

Words fall short, but this is amazing. Jaw-dropping. Literally my favorite lego moc I've seen on mocpages. I love the pits of fire; the innovative ways people use fire always amuse me. I'm a fan of the classic fire and have not purchased a lego set in years so I don't have any of the new series of pieces. Back when I regularly bought lego sets, they had been using the same pieces since the classic castle sets of my childhood. The angels are breathtaking. I'm a big fan of the new larger-than-minifig scale figs that people are coming up with. I really like the blinding-white light spilling forth from behind them. Great idea. Keep it up.
