"Illusionist: Build an optical illusion in Lego form."

Chris Phipson : “Paul? Sebeus? So you too were asked to come to this gloomy house without further explanation and came right away?”
Sebeus I : ”Er… Yeah…”
Paul Vermeesch : “Look! There’s a letter!”

C.P. : “What does it say?”
S.I. : “It’s not open yet…”
P.V. : “It says: “Dear judges,
“I proved unable to put one great optical illusion together, so I made a few ones. I found this abandoned house to display them.
“Whenever you’re ready
“Just knock on the door
“And you'll meet me
“In the Illusion Corridor.”

** Knock-knock **

Siggy : “Hello! Welcome to the Illusion Corridor! This way, please…”

This is the bulging checkerboard.

Here you can see no photo editing was used to get this huge checkerboard to fit in its little frame! It’s another optical illusion (although a very common one…)

A closer look at the checkerboard…

Siggy : “I have to tell you… The next one is a little disappointing…”
C.P. : “What is that??”

This is an attempt to redo a famous experiment by Isaac Newton: Additive colours on a spinning disc. When turning fast enough, the disc should seem white. Unfortunately…

It just displays a circular rainbow… At least it’s nice!

One of the – probably numerous – reasons why it didn’t work is the size of the motor. It didn’t allow me to add any gear, so the wheel never reached the required speed…

Onto the next room...

P.V. : “Hey Chris! You’re going the wrong way!”

C.P. : “Are you sure? I can clearly see the arrow points the other way…”

C.P. : “Hu-ho…”
P.V. : “OK…”
Siggy : “Follow me!”

Siggy : ”So Sebeus, does your sig-fig ever smile from time to time?”
S.I. : “No.”

This is another classic illusion…

…displayed the same way as the checkerboard.
For you REAL judges to fully enjoy it, you’ll need to use the next picture. Get closer to your screen, focus on the “nose” and keep your eyes on it for at least 30 seconds, and then look at the blank picture that follows. A minifig’s head should appear in real colours. This one actually works but you may need to try again, perhaps blink when you stare at the white picture…

Siggy : “The trip is not over…”

Siggy : “This is the illusionist’s room.”
P.V. : “I don’t get it…”

Siggy : “It has everything an illusionist needs, and a big mirror for practicing his art.”
S.I. : “And what is this box for? Chris?? What are you doing in here?”
C.P. : “I always wanted to know how it feels to be cut to pieces!”

OK, so in case you didn’t notice at first sight – and I hope so! -, the illusion is there is no mirror. I built two identical rooms, less one wall to take the pictures…

Siggy : “Please step into the last room…”
S.I. : “It’s dark…”

** SLAM!!! **

P.V. : “Hey! He shut us in?!”
S.I. : “And where’s Chris again?”

C.P. : “OK, it’s time to get out of here!”

"Where are they gone now?”

Inside the room…

S.I. : “It’s just a white wall…”

P.V. : “…And a kind of bizarre sculpture-thingy…”

C.P. : “Ah! I found a switch!”

S.I. : “ARGH!!!”

Siggy : ”That’s all!”
C.P. : “Did I miss something?”

A picture of the whole build :

Commentary : Well, this was a tough one for me! I hope you enjoyed it, both the story and the illusions. Sorry about the dark last pictures, it’s late here and my lamps are bad… Judges, I apologize for what I’ve done with you… We don’t know each other but I needed characters, so I decided Paul would be the serious guy, Chris the joker and Sebeus the moaner (blame your sig-fig!)… I’m sure you three are serious, reasonably joking and never moaning ;-) Anyway, feel free to take revenge on me, but AFTER voting!

Thanks everyone! Please rate and comment…

Great way of presenting illusions in a museum, I liked the bulging checkerboard a lot and the illusion with the minifigure head really worked, blinking does help. You have my vote. PS my sigfig is a moaner when dressed like that :P

Not 1 illusion but 6? Plus weaving it all into a story too - you have excelled yourself sir! Reading this post was a joy from start to finish. I think my favourýte illusion was the minifig head, a classic illusion that you've executed perfectly! Well done...

That was a lot of fun. You must have worked all the classic illusions in Lego here, which is really impressive given the time frame we were working under. The mirrored room was my favourite. Good luck!

Quoting Stuart Delahay It's great to see you producing not one or two, but lots of illusions! It shouldn't go un-mentioned that you still took the time to make sets and props (love the illusionists box with the swords stuck through) that all look good too. Great work, good luck with your judges!
Thanks Stuart, that means a lot that you noticed all this stuff! Good luck to you too!

Quoting Leda Kat =^..^= This is an incredible amount of work here! I was so amazed at the minifig head trick, it was so cute to see a little yellow face smiling at me through a completely white page on my computer screen! The checker board is great too. All of it was great and I loved the way you presented it as a corridor.
Thanks! I really appreciate that you like the head trick, it's one of my favorites. As if you could take this smiling image with you wherever you go... I know, I'm weird sometimes...
